I think that few people are understanding how this "bomb" works. It isn't just a big boom that will break up the planet. It will make the active volcanoes (which some people were led to believe were not active) turn all the underground water instantly into steam. There will so much pressure it will just blow out in all directions, powerful enough to crack the surface. A lot of bang for the buck. Use the planets' natural energy to destroy it.

The whole Mirror Universe rabbit hole they fell down strikes me as yet another completely wasted opportunity to make the Klingon/Feddy war have any weight at all. Before their little side excursion, it seemed the war was happening to two ships and six people, none of which I was given much reason to care about. Then it gets tied up with a sparkly improbability bow in short order? What a load of-- OOOOOOO!!!! DISCOPRISE!!!!!! So shiny...

    Glad I skipped it.

Absolutely understand the tech behind it.

Issue is the writers shouldn’t have used/defined the tech this way to begin with.

It’s ridiculous to assume some forgotten/irrelevant t’kumva follower shows up with an iPad with a “claim” and vaults herself to power without any show of force for evidence.

This is a high stake issue not to be trivially pushed aside with an ipad detonator and a story.

What we are basically told to believe is that l’rell believes that the feds could destroy them at any time and are willing to do so.

I think the issue with the episode is they wrapped up too many things with 5 seconds of footage.

In the end, they stayed true to the highest principles of the Federation.

By handing a planet-killing superweapon to an insane religious despot who will use it to subjugate her species.

I thought it was pretty funny though that the Klings just said "to hell with it" with their plans of conquest, to simply be an occasional pain in the ass for the Federation for the next 40 years.

I actually think that's what it boils down to. L'Rell has her finger on the bomb button, but there's an inherent understanding, she didn't put the bomb there, and the people who did so can do it again, and do it elsewhere.

"Yo, we parked a Crossfield class starship under your lawn, twin-pipes. Guess where the next ones goes?" would have probably been the communique from UFP to the Klingon Empire we did not get to see, but hey, it's implied. Context is for kings etc.

The hydro-bomb thing was completely ridiculous. Much of the groundwater is above the normal boiling point anyway, with pressure being what keeps it liquid. Hell, the earth's mantle has as much water trapped in hydrated minerals as all of the Earth's oceans. Hell, a lot of volcanic eruptions (and geysers) are caused when pressurized, super-heated water and gases manage to work their way to the earth's surface suddenly.

Regardless, the energy needed to boil all of the groundwater on a planet would basically cook the entire crust and turn it to lava anyway. You wouldn't need the volcanoes to erupt.

A better use of technobabble would have been some sort of dark energy weapon. Just change the cosmological constant to increase the baseline level of inflation of space in the local universe around Qo'nos. Gravity would be canceled out, and everything would begin breaking into smaller and smaller chunks.

To the extent that there is any real world analogue to the behavior of Starfleet in this story, we in the West generally consider states that do this sort of thing irresponsible and dangerous to our interests.

wasn't happy with the steampunk bomb thing, either. Clearly once you get warp power you manage to deal with tectonics or Starfleet wouldnt have made the half-assed decision to put their fleet headquarters on a fault line.

I dont know why they didnt just go anti-matter/matter or some other thing, but the point was, they were deep in the structure of the planet without hindrance, they basically owned it.

Hopefully, you know I'm with you on that. My statement was supposed to be painfully sarcastic.

I think an anti-matter/matter bomb would have made a lot more sense. We know that an anti-matter/matter explosion would release a lot of energy, even more than a nuke. And it does not take a lot of anti-matter so a small bomb would be fine. Planted inside an active volcano and you could get a mass extinction event. Hydro means water so a hydrobomb is a bit of a silly name IMO.

"Just change the cosmological constant?" What are you, a Q?

They probably should've just used a time crystal, and have Ash and L'Rell take over Qo'noS that way. She could probably challenge the Chancellor to the death easily if she has unlimited do-overs.

I wonder if she might pull a Worf and just install "Voq" as the Klingon Chancellor now.

He didn't speak in Inhumans. He was absolutely fantastic in Hell on Wheels, though.

Plus, I like the idea of an actor with a background in Westerns playing Pike. A little extra tribute to Hunter.

Now that you mention it... I would've actually liked that. For season 2, I'm still hoping to see some of the fallout from handing her the detonator, with a full-on civil war and all.

In a basically Human body, with only Human-level strength... he'd last a grand total of two minutes on the throne before getting a bat'leth to the chest. I don't think L'Rell would bring him into the limelight any soon.
