So many of the characters are assholes.
The engineering crew are constantly drunk. They need the right alcohol level to make the door open.
Or they have really horrible breath.
Or both...they often go hand-in-hand.
I've seen this happen a couple times, they say they hate something (ranting even), but then end up liking it.
I think just by reading through this thread...you can tell there are FAR more people who are enjoying it than you'd otherwise guess. And there are a lot of people who are "unimpressed" but sticking with it. That's actually a very good sign...even though they continue to play the skeptic.

(I kinda hated it, but I still gave it three, it was technically well made and the actors were good, even if I didn't like it.)
Um, the Feds know where Romulus is, and even have a number of Outpost stations to scan for/protect against Romulan ship incursion. Now if you saw an actual Romulan in the shot where she saw Romulas (screencap please) - then we have a canon problem.
It does, and I was not trying to "poke fun" at the board member...just point out a fact!
Though due the paywall, there is some selection bias going on here. Those who really hated the first episode are not gonna pay to see more and thus are not voting and commenting.
I'd say that simply evens-out other biases that find their way into the scoring, to be honest.
I'm still going to be optimistic about this but I wasn't a huge fan of this episode. I'll be open minded about Lorca's fanatic utilitarianism but I hope the show doesn't glorify it and presents it in a reasonable context. With Michael as the point of view character, it may.
But if this show turns into an op ed piece for Inter Arma Silent Leges I will not enjoy it.
Also I'm not getting how Michael is blamed for the war when the official record should probably show the Klingons would have attacked with or without Michael's interference, or even that the battle would have had fewer casualties if the captain had listened to her and fired first. She committed mutiny but no reasonable investigation would also blame her for the outcome.
I'm a little worried that I do not like any of the characters yet besides the two we already knew about. Even in super-dark BSG they made the cast generally likable pretty quickly.
Boy Voyager could have really used some of those spores.

Your first point, it probably came from whatever accident happened on the ship, the experimental drive does open portals or something like that, it might have come from one of those.
Your second point was explained in the episode. It was caused the accident involving the Space Mushrooms.
