Saying it here because it probably doesn't need its own thread.
For all the talk that these three movies have been a "TOS reboot", they're actually chock full of more references and reused elements from the TOS movies, which were a reboot of a reboot of a- well, you undestand.
Is it because non-fans are more likely to have seen the movies than the show? And they can go - "Aha! There it is!" at any of the throwbacks without it going over their heads?

Not really, the original six TOS movies were a continuation, not a reboot.

Could be all by chance, but I've actually seen and heard more TOS TV references than movie references.

Possibly. The first two are definitely more influenced by the movies. Beyond is more tv TOS but still has a healthy amount of nods to the movies.

Enterprise A? Enterprise destruction? Trek V crew photo? Kirks birthday with Bones? Revenge seeking madman villain(again)?

    Oh, right.

That seems like a generic plot, not a movie homage.

Also the bit on the Franklin, when scotty says he had to transport Bones and Spock one at a time (as they were using old transporters) or risk splicing them - to which Bones replies something like 'I can't imagine anything worse!' - a clear nod to The Search for Spock. The 'absent friends' toast which is another TSFS and Nemesis reference. Kirk refusing the desk job at the end is a clear nod to his path in the TOS movies too.

I've given ST:Beyond a C+ on this grade range, I found it to be a decent movie, much better than the previous one.

This might have already been discussed, but is there an attempt at explaining why it appears that an exposure to the vacuum of space doesn't lead to depressurization of environments? There are a lot of scenes in the movie where a wall gets torn out or some person is ejected into space and they don't explode, neither do people still in the ship explode. Krall is ejected into outer space and doesn't explode. None of these people are wearing pressurized space suits, so I was very confused. Is this somehow addressed or it's one of those "let's not think about it" moments?

As I recall, it's not, so I'm guessing that it's one of those common fudges, like sound in space.

No one would explode if exposed to the vacuum of space. That is a common misconception, largely perpetuated by movies. There would be an expansion of water vapour in your body and significant swelling, but it would not be enough to cause your epidermal layer to burst.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure lungs would expand and explode if they had any air in them. I guess skin could hold without being ruptured, but it would still balloon, which we don't see in those scenes, particularly the close up of Krall

The lungs would explode (especially if someone drew a breath--exhaling is the better option), but only internally. They did avoid showing the ballooning, but actual exploding would not happen in real life.

Noticed STB has now been taken over by Trolls in 2016 worldwide losing the #25 spot. (also xXx3 has overtaken STB .. xXx!!)

I am curious, was there ever a novelization done for this movie?

thanks. pity there wasn't. not usually one for novelizations but a book for this one would have been admittedly interesting.

I finally saw this a few days ago, on Netflix.

Grade: F (as usual, since it's still a dumb series of movies)

For all the fuss of nuSulu being gay, it was basically a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" scene. Why were people so upset?

The homage to Spock and the rest of the Original Series crew was nice.

So the magic transporter nuScotty invented in the last movie didn't work out? And nuKhan's magic blood hasn't cured death?

How many years has Captain Frat Boy been in command of the ship? Shouldn't nuSpock and nuUhura have had to deal with his pon farr by now? And WTF is this promotion to the admiralty about? Just mimicking the TOS movie series? There's no way nuKirk could have earned that rank at so young an age.

Oh, well. Whether he's Captain Frat Boy or Admiral Frat Boy, he's still nuKirk the Frat Boy who was given a starship to play with.
