Roberto Orci Not Directing Trek XIII

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, and fun to watch the haters' heads collectively explode.

There's going to be a certain peer pressure among the haters, as time goes by, to embrace the next movie simply to "prove" that Abrams and Orci were as horrible as they keep claiming. This'll be really funny if the content of Star Trek 3 turns out to be as overbalanced toward action and humor and away from complexity as a lot of what's going on suggests.

Fortunately, the amount of haters is rather small; but they are so entertainingly vocal. In any event, I am looking forward to some critical analysis of the new film, be it positive or negative.

Let me repeat this because this must be some strange upside down land, but STID made piles of money. It is the fourth highest grossing Star Trek movie of all time, beating the shit out of both TWOK and First Contact, two Trek films highly prized by fans both casual and hardcore. It was a critical success. STID was financially and critically successful. This is fact.

Yes. It is a fact that the nuTrek films did great for the franchise when you narrow it down like that... But in today's competition, that's not enough for Hollywood. There's a reason there's talk of wanting to make Trek 3 more like GUADIANS OF THE GALAXY: That film made more money. As hard as Bad Robot tried, they can't seem to pull in an audience as big as that. Even GRAVITY did a more impressive job.

Then there's the bit about STID not doing as well domestically, despite the bump with 3D tickets. That's not to say that it was a failure (considering the money it made), but it's not blowing anyone's pants off at Paramount. It's understandable why Paramount would be concerned over Trek 3 and why they'd decide to drop an untested director like Orci in favor of a highly successful Justin Lin.

Ah. The victim card.

Exactly so.

As to whether there was negativity about Meyer replacing Wise...yeah, but a good deal more about Harve Bennett replacing Roddenberry. The idea of the guy behind Six Million Dollar Man replacing The Great Bird was beyond the pale.

To be fair, Wise and Roddenberry were coming off of THE MOTION PICTURE. I don't think I would have welcomed them back either.

Orci was set to direct and is now no longer the director.

This can be said.

He was writing it (along with Patrick McKay & John D. Payne) and is now no longer writing Trek 3.

As has been pointed out, his role as a writer on the picture is unclear; how much of his efforts will be retained in the final screenplay is unclear.

He has retained the role of producer but does not know if Trek 3 is going to be a good movie.

If anyone tells you they know a movie is going to be good before a frame of film has been shot, they're lying.

Plus, "I don't know" is a safe answer. Orci knows full well he has a group of ankle biters trying to get him at every turn. By taking a neutral stance, they can't pin him on one answer; not that any answer aside from "I'm sorry, your vast knowledge of Star Trek has changed me! I shall keep Christma-er, Prime universe Trek in my heart for all of my days!" will amount to anything.

It would not surprise me a bit if this next movie was Paramount's farewell to the Trek franchise.

It's a given that you can't please everyone, but when it comes to Trek fandom you can't please anyone.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Suits said screw it and let it die. I wouldn't blame them for doing it, and right now I think I'd be right on board.

Star Trek Fans suck.

Edit: Star Trek Fans ssssssuuuuuuuuuuck. :guffaw:

"I don't know" is a more honest answer. It's not the safe answer. It goes against the Hollywood Hype Way of saying things like "Harrison said it's the best script he's ever read." That's how you do it before shooting a frame of film.

“Stop blaming [Bad Robot]. [Time Travel] was my idea so that you would not know what was gonna happen next. Nothing more or less. I stand behind it."

Solid. Straight-forward. Respectable.

Stay classy, Bob.

Yeah, he's really stooping nearly low enough to look some of the trekmovie.com /l/o/s/e/r/s "critics" in the eye.

I don't really get Orci's claim that fans will know what happened. Those who make movies do what they want. There will be complaints either way, so how does leaving our Prime timeline solve that? If Tarantino can kill Hitler, surely there won't be any more complaints about going against the Prime timeline canon than going with an alternate timeline? All the new fans they are targeting wouldn't know the difference and anyone who does complain can just be called pedantic, because after all it's just entertainment - not anything real like making fiction out of our own history. Inglourious Basterds was a great movie and the ending was awesome. Maybe give Tarantino a shot at Trek in the Prime timeline. ;)

Star Trek Fans suck.

Only Star Trek fans facing the prospect of not having it all their own way bitch about "Star Trek fans." :p I can pretty much promise you Paramount gives zero fucks about the specific dynamics of the drama on any day at all. (Orci appears to be a different matter and should probably stop haunting comments sections, but hey, it's his life.)

Even then, do we know that Justin Lin isn't really Roberto Orci in a Justin Lin mask? I haven't seen them together.

actually Orci is clearly Justin Lin in a Orci mask, being that Orci was the one that posted on trekmovie that he's out, which is what seems to be impossible to believe, which actually means-

Regardless, Orci is producing. Orci is involved in the writing. Haters be dipped, it's happening.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, and fun to watch the haters' heads collectively explode.
What if you suddenly don't like the third film?
