Roberto Orci Not Directing Trek XIII

People seem to forget Justin Lin is in charge, as he's director. Unless someone seems to have insider info that Orci is actually calling the shots and Lin is just a director for hire, not allowed to bring his own input and sensibilities.

If Lin knows Orci, perhaps Orci can apprentice under him to get some directing experience.
Perhaps its just another part of the Bad Robot conspiracy to use Star Trek for its own evil purposes. ;)

Aren't directors hired by producers ?

IMDb lists 13 producers, co-producers and executive producers for Star Trek Into Darkness.

J.J. Abrams ... producer
Bryan Burk ... producer
Jeffrey Chernov ... executive producer
David Ellison ... executive producer
Dana Goldberg ... executive producer
Tommy Gormley ... co-producer
Tommy Harper ... co-producer
Alex Kurtzman ... producer
Damon Lindelof ... producer
Roberto Orci ... producer
Michelle Rejwan ... co-producer
Ben Rosenblatt ... co-producer
Paul Schwake ... executive producer

I wonder who produced what. Most producers and co-producers merely contribute to the script but didn't receive approval of the WGA to get a writer credit.

That's not really what producers and co-producers do on movies, though the way the titles are sometimes used in TV is misleading. I imagine that Maurice, who is a producer and a member of PGA could give us a tutorial if he happens to see this and feels like commenting.

I may be wrong about this, but I think the way the search process works on this kind of film is that the producers may put names forward as desired directors but that higher-ups at the studio have ultimate approval over the hiring.

I just figured all those titles mean any more is dealing on profit share and sweetheart deals when necessary.

Regardless, Orci is producing. Orci is involved in the writing. Haters be dipped, it's happening.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, and fun to watch the haters' heads collectively explode.
What if you suddenly don't like the third film?

Then it's a movie I don't like. Big deal. Life goes on. I won't be tearing my clothes and rubbing ashes into my hair over it. :p

Dude, if you don't like a Star Trek film you're required to start a Facebook group rife with personal insults and physical threats against the filmmakers. What kind of fan are you, anyway?

Actually, you are required to create SEVERAL Facebook groups.

Get with the program. Hate takes work these days.

I don't know about anyone else but, if I find a movie disappointing, I generally won't watch it again. The way I did with Star Trek VI. Actually, I did try watching TMP again once, but that was a mistake - I just couldn't stick with it.

I guess I must be a pretty dull sort of fan, then; I don't do any of those. I don't even complain about them endlessly on internet message boards. :sigh:

I haven't found any of the Trek movies unwatchable. I saw TMP in theater in '79 and rewatch it occasionally. It grows on you. I actually do like TUC. It's not my favorite one, but again. It grows on you.

Yeah, I'm a pretty mediocre fan myself. No cons, no uniforms, no action figures, few books. I just like the show. :)

Mike Okuda weighs in on Trek 3 - a calm and measured comment, to be sure.
@MikeOkuda
@BurnettRM @trailingjohnson Star Trek doesn't need a fan running it. Just a talented artist that respects the material and its heritage.

FYI, he tweeted this to Robert Meyer Burnett and Justin Lin.

Great comment from Mike. I've always found Burnett a bit of a fanish blowhard.
