The box office earnings for INS and NEM effectively killed Berman-era Trek. Yes, the Abrams films showed CBS that Trek was still a viable property and could still work on TV, but there's no way they're going back to Berman Trek. Which seems to be what people want when they say they want ENT back.
If INS and NEM killed the Berman era, I'm not sure why ENT has gotten all the blame for all these years.
Continuing on, even I don’t think that a return to the Berman era is realistic. But that does not mean that ENT would not be able to adapt to the current day direction of the franchise.
Production: this change is to be expected. Even back during ENT’s original run, it’s first season had much better production values than TNG S1. And just like there was 17 years between TNGS1 and ENT S4, its been 17 years between ENT S4 and DIS S4/PIC S2/SNW S1. Production being very different is an obvious duh.
LGBTQ+ representation: this is to be expected too. The lack of LGBTQ+ characters due to Berman not wanting LGBT characters has been debated ad nauseum. ENT was even termed by one reddit user as “aggressively heterosexual”. I’d imagine that any future ENT project would feature an LGBTQ+ character. While Reed is often looked to as that character, I’d say Kelby from S4 would make for a good retcon; the introduction of the Orion pheromones doesn’t really disqualify Kelby (or most of the crew, tbh) from being retconned to being gay and having a husband. And LGBTQ+ representation on the show will sure make a follow up to “Cogenitor” more interesting.
TOS must be present in some form: it’s never really been an issue for the show – even though it can be argued that the show was really a TNG prequel – as the TOS refences have been there. This isn’t even an S4 thing. The appearance of the Tholians and the appearance of the Romulans were among the highest rated episodes of S2. “Marauders” was a throwback to Klingon episodes of TOS and it had high ratings too. Even a bad episode in “Precious Cargo” was a throwback to TOS with the romance between the alien princes and Trip and had high ratings as well. Even “Judgment” - ENT’s take on TUC in S2 – drew more viewers than anything aired in S4 except “Terra Prime”/TATV. The was also the Axanar and the Malurians that had only been mentioned in TOS, but were shown in ENT for the first time in its first season and those ratings were very good. TOS stories do draw viewers. Those stories weren’t drawing viewers by S4 as by that point the network had given up on the show and dropped them on Fridays in the run up to cancellation, even though that too is a callback to TOS.
18+ content: ENT was already swearing, offered sexuality and had gruesome violent deaths during its original run. I don’t think anyone will care if they ramp it up some more so that they can drop some F bombs, be even more gratuitous with sex and decapitate some characters. ENT even dropped an F bomb in its very first episode. Hoshi just happened to say it in Vulcan instead of English

.
The Big Four: each show has its big four (DIS=Burnham, Saru, Stamets, Tilly; PIC = Picard, Jurati, Raffi, Rios (S1)/Seven (S2); SNW = Pike, Una, Spock, La’an; LD = Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, Tendi). I don’t think there are going to be much complaints if the big three expands to the Big Four; its was arguably trending in that direction with plans to add Shran to the main cast in S5.
Serialization: again, not an issue. If anything, being limited to 10 episodes would cut out the filler episodes that made up a good portion of the Xindi arc. Or most of S1 & S2, which had its arcs in the journey to Risa, the autonomous repair station, the Vulcan-Andorian conflict, the TCW, and the Klingon’s pursuit of Archer.
Live action or animation: I’m not bothered if they do CGI like the live action shows for any fly by shots or battle scenes, but then the crew and interior of the ships are animated like in PRO. ENT was already a mix of live action and CGI in its orignal run. This seems like the logical course of progression, no pun intended.
The show will be mediocre: will it? A good stretch of DIS S4 has been praised. SNW’s first season has been praised. If left to Terry Matalas – who wrote the first two episode of PIC S2, which have been praised as the best episodes of the season – it will turn out much better than mediocre. And in any case, TPTB saying they don’t want another ENT if they announced an ENT revival would play a lot different that saying they don’t want another TNG with PIC.
And even if TPTB have no plans to bring back Trinneer as Trip, there’s no reason he can’t be brought back as Charles Tucker I or Charles Tucker II. Or they bring back Bakula as Archer’s great grandfather during the Eugenics Wars. Or the other cast members to play as their ancestors.
The main issue I see is CBS not wanted to buy the unused and undeveloped ENT scripts of those that worked in the Berman era, even though personally I’d just buy those scripts and be done with it and figure out how to make them work in an ENT revival with 2020s production.
