wooden acting

He wasn't the best actor on DS9 (imo that honour goes to Andrew Robinson and Jeffrey Combs), but I'm fine with him. It could get a little weird when he was agitated, but in more normal or silent situations I think he was really good. And as ZapBrannigan said, even the over-agitated stuff could just be a character trait, it's not incredulous imo.

And to be honest, his misfortune (if you will) was that he was on DS9 which on average had the best acting of any Trek, the competition was stiff. In my opinion Terry Farrell was the only one among the main cast whose acting was bad. Other Treks always had a lot of bad acting, it's only on DS9 that most of it was good.

If we compare captains, I think Brooks was actually the second best actor after Stewart. Shatner was fun but often just ridiculous. Mulgrew was meh and Bakula was just bad. Isaacs was pretty good, the most positive thing I can say about Discovery, but still I'd take Sisko over Lorca any day.

Hell, when you look at Sisko's worst acting in DS9, he's basically being a black Shatner. Same cadence and everything.
U sure?

He's grotesquely overdoing it, just like in many scenes when he isn't even supposed to be mad or anything

The "Children" turbolift scene? Shatner was great throughout TOS, and he went wide in one scene. That scene was badly written, but he committed to it 100 percent and put his "perfect image" aside to get the show on film.

Brooks was a different story. Sometimes he was fine, and sometimes he manufactured Sisko's emotions because he was not in the moment and not feeling it.

Is this thread real?

Ds9 had some amazing actors, especially when you include the recurring characters, like Kai Winn, Dukat, Garak, Weyoun, and Damar.

At the risk of offending some I confess that I don't think the main cast was as strong as it could have been. Kira should have been played by Michelle Forbes. Nana Visitor was ok but she was weak when she tried to do big emotional moments. Her range was limited but at least the character had some focus. The character of Dax didn't have that focus and Terry Farrell just couldn't carry the character especially when the writers made her a Klingon fan girl in season 4. I don't think Siddig El Fadil was the best actor for Bashir. Aside from his chemistry with Garak and O'brien, a much more convincing and charismatic actor could have played the part. There was something very weaselly, very shifty, and very slippery about Bashir. In the later seasons, Very little of his delivery had any authority so you never knew whether the character was being real or putting on his British smug airs. I found it infuriating.

As for being smug, if you know him in real life and he is smug, I could see being infuriated that it would called acting.
However, in the show he was supposed to be smug because he had super intelligence.
Did he have the same British smug airs in the alternate universe episodes? ( I hate them and usually skip them)

Brooks portrayal of Sisko to me seemed often to be someone maintaining a facade of calm and control over near anarchy, but devious enough to let everyone know that it's only thin veneer so tread carefully around him. I didn't find his performance to have any cellulosic content.

I haven't watched DS9 in over a year but when I last watched seasons 3-7 I found Bashir frustrating. Another actor who reminds me of Siddig El Fadil is the actor who played Baltar in Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica. He has a similar British accent and a similar delivery. I found his performances convincing and his character believable. He was written and acted with intention. If that actor had any lack of conviction or shiftiness, it was consciously used to the character's advantage. He was supposed to be a worm.

I did enjoy Siddig's performance in the Mirror episodes.

Freakishly enough
I had a dream a couple of nights ago that I was making out with Bashir at a party.
Noooooooooo it couldn't have been Sisko, or Picard, Worf, or even Riker, but Bashir.
But even in the dream, I was thinking to myself, "jeez, what a smooth operator, bet he gets a new chick every hour on the hour."
But then later I ended up leaving the party with the chef.
But he was a smoker, so
It didn't work out. :ack:
So I think subconsciously Bashir does come across as a worm/snake.:techman:

The thing about Brooks is that he's only OK in unemotional renderings, like when he reads a report or talks to someone about not critical stuff. But as soon as he has to express an emotion, it's just terrible, he starts with the dog breathing, the high-pitched tone of voice, the yelling, the erratic movements. There's so much scenery chewing that it's a wonder he as any teeth left!!!

Mmmm,
Are you sure you're not mixing him up with
Someone completely unrelated on a differ show, produce possibly way more recently?

If not can you site any examples?
Because I just don't see it like this at all.

Anyway, I think he is do good looking, I guess I'm biased.
I can only recall one time where is expression and acting are dumb.
And I just imagine it's one of those scenes where everyone was cracking up
All over the place and it's the best they could get out of him, maybe it was late/ overtime etc.
But otherwise I think he's the bomb.

You mean like that Dr. Noah temporarily displaying as Sisko's body instead of whatever body he was supposed to be displaying?

Well, there's this but I am afraid it's incomplete:
