...Why the journey? I mean, it makes no sense for Marcus to take the scenic route, either as a means of escaping Kirk's attentions, or reaching her ultimate destination, or spending extra time with Kirk in relative private - or anything, really.

Might be the ship has two engine rooms, being broad like that. Especially if she used to be a fightercarrier and had a big bay at the centerline, the vestigial aft end of which merely indicates the width while currently having minimal depth because Starfleet installed so many labs and mushroomrooms and whatnot.

...Or then the mush-room replaces former portside engineering.

That's kind of the impression I've gotten. The engine room we've seen is where the spores are grown and injected into the living host and the traditional warp engines and core are somewhere else nearby, although the glowing elements behind the access gateway or screen in the back of the room are possibly a nod to the visible engine elements that we see in the engine room on the TOS Enterprise.

I guess we could decide Carol Marcus makes no sense. After all, when realizing the time-critical fact that the Vengeance will catch up with them and kill them, she again skips turbolifts and decides to run to the bridge, this taking as long as a starship flies from the Klingon border to Earth...

Perhaps she's as elevatorphobic as McCoy was transporterphobic? (I can't believe there's no fancy Latin-Greek-mishmash word for either fear!)

Save for the fact that Carol was presenting herself under false pretenses, so it is a scene that actually makes sense in context.

It does draw major attention to the one thing about the movies the Makers would wish to dodge, though: the fact that these aren't the same actors as before. Sort of like the Klingon Makeover issue, only they don't lampshade it with a Worfism, they rationalize it Augment Virus style.

Plus, the stupid hike where the transitions from one set to another are in fact impossible to accept in the context of the uninterrupted dialogue.

You can probably live in Sydney, Australia and work in London, UK and travel via transport or a very fast shuttle to get there.

By Sisko's time you can beam from one location on Earth to New Orleans in no time at all so I imagine that unless you want to take the scenic route via air tram, shuttle or ground transportation you don't have any impediment to travel so long as there isn't a global emergency that briefly prohibits certain travel and communication ("Homefront(DS9)," "Paradise Lost(DS9)") and you have the transporter coordinates.

I don't see it that way. She concealed her identity and connection to Admiral Marcus, and came aboard the Enterprise under false pretenses. Kirk had a reasonable assumption that the accept was part of the fake out.

Indeed, the forgery would have to be comprehensive in order to meet Carol's goals: she wants to sneak aboard unnoticed (well, unrecognized) either by Kirk or her father.

Which leaves wide open whether Carol even was in Starfleet to begin with. There'd be little time or patience for a "Get out of that uniform before I throw you in the brig for wearing it!" scene, say.

Then he is still an ignorant idiot, Marcus would not be the first child to have a different accent from their parent. Children of immigrants have it all the time. Plus as the daughter of a career Starfleet officer she might have travelled around the galaxy a lot living on different planets/starbases etc

Possibly but he had made an assumption, not necessarily from ignorance. And it's a common enough trope in fiction that I'm not comfortable calling him an "ignorant idiot" when she lied to get on board. Why trust anything she says?
