Since we know Emperor Georgiou is now a member of Section 31 (based on the latest trailer), it stands to reason we'll meet some other members of the organization. So, will we get to meet Admiral Alexander Marcus this season? He was, after all, Head of Starfleet Command in Star Trek Into Darkness and also headed up Section 31. I'd love to see Peter Weller's character return this season as a different version of his Kelvin counterpart in a universe where the Into Darkness characters' fears of war with Klingons have come to fruition. Would he be as big of a warmonger in the Prime timeline or would he be more laid back and mellow? Hopefully we'll find out!

I don't think there is an Admiral Marcus. Prime Carol wasn't in Starfleet.

Unlikely. Admiral Alexander Marcus is a creation of the recent movie series and although some will insist CBS can legally include Kelvin movieverse creations, they are extremely unlikely to. Bad Robot would probably have to sign off on it, and they don't much like others playing with their stuff.
Actually, she was in Starfleet in old Trek comics (and perhaps one or teo of the older novels too), leaving after her relationship with Jim went bad.

    From the in-universe POV:

    - For all we know, Carol Marcus wasn't Starfleet in the Kelvinverse, either. Spock establishes that she "lied about her identity", which need not be limited to her giving a false surname. Supposedly, forging the records would be an in-for-a-penny thing: if you can change your name, you can change your entire background, gender and species, too.

    - Marcus is the Big Boss as of 2260 or so. Him not being that yet in 2257 or 2258 need not be due to the Nero Effect or anything: we see the top seat change warmers in the TOS movies often enough.

    - Starfleet is likely to have its hawks especially in the aftermath of Burnham's War. Would be fun to see Alex Marcus seethe and froth in the background, impotent to actually achieve anything in this reality.

    From the out-universe POV:

    - The Kelvinverse name-dropped or easter-egged names from elsewhere in Trek often enough. DSC is actually likely to return the courtesy, for multiple reasons:

    1) Easier and cheaper to do than ever, as now you don't have to carve "Admiral Roddenberry" in brass when your bridge is full of fully interactive computer displays for real.
    2) Long tradition weighing on a show riding on tradition.
    3) Apparent pressure to prove this is Real Trek after all.

Now, who should play Peter Weller here?

    Joel Kinnaman of course. :)

I don’t think she lied about being in Starfleet. Just her name.

Hard to tell how different she is here, really. Perhaps not at all? Her specialty here is weapons research, but this might be what made her study Genesis in the first place. She knows Christine Chapel, who may or may not be Starfleet at this juncture of spacetime - but she'd know lots of Starfleet folks anyway, through his dad, and perhaps met Kirk that way in that other universe.

In the comics she stays on after Darkness so she must have been a Starfleet Officer.

I think the answer is as simple as whether he was Kurtzman's brainchild or Orci's. I have no idea who wrote what, but given the nature of the character, I'm guessing he was probably more Orci's idea. (In fact, I like to think - on whole - ID was more his film and 09 was more Kurtzman's.)

**As far as Carol, if we assume she is Mitchell's 'blonde lab technician,' then she probably would have gone to the academy and dropped out before she graduated.

In fact, given how Disco loves bringing back the old and its arcing theme of science v. military, the reasons she left might be something to explore in season three/four.

True, but that doesn't mean Marcus Prime has to be.

Marcus was already an adult when the divergence occurred, so his basic character would start out the same in either timeline. But assuming that whatever made Marcus a dick only happened in Kelvin, his Prime counterpart could still be a good guy (and may not even have anything to do with Section 31).

You've got that backwards, Bad Robot paid CBS to license the Star Trek Universe in a joint venture with Paramount.
As such, CBS retains all rights to anything Bad Robot creates and can use ad hoc wherever it wishes.

Then why was Bad Robot able to order all of the Kelvin novels cancelled?

As always, real life is more complicated. They used their right to block the release of four Kelvinverse noveld in 2010. I don't know what the current agreement is or what may have expired since, but they could befinitely block use of their stuff if they wanted. And there are still no novels overtly using elements of the Kelvin universe.

IIRC someone from CBS said this year that they’re waiting to see what happens with movie 4 before they start doing stories.

At Star Trek Vegas 2017 they did say they are allowed to use Kelvin Timeline material now.

One of the DTI novels did mention it as a quaint but important little fuckup of the TSC only because PrimeSpock was "trapped" there as no one could extract him without diar consequences, which amounted to months of paperwork to DTI Agents, from it.

As we all know, nothing matters more than having someone work overtime that also happens to be a normal human, even another massive universe branching off your own through a massive continuum shattering event.

The comics told months and months worth of stories between movies, and even a series set during the end construction montage of Beyond, where the crew split and have other adventures. And of course, they know nothing of movie 4 (which is heartbreakingly pretty much DOA)
Yet they still haven't announced anything set in the Kelvinverse, and only made small "under the radar" mentions of it.

Seeing a Prime Marcus, played by Weller, who took a different path from his Kelvin counterpart would be a treat.

That said, one admiral that I hoped DSC would revisit was Cartwright. What happened to Captain (or Commodore) Cartwright during the Klingon War that left him open to joining a treasonous conspiracy later in his career? With Meyer’s former involvement and the storyline of season 1, I feel like it was a missed opportunity.

Because the Novel-verse is another Licensing arm of Trek from CBS and thus doesn't get the same liberties that CBS itself has.
And most likely CBS agreed with Paramount & Bad Robot about not creating stories that use concepts They might want to use in the movies, as well as creating conflicting histories with the characters.
As for the comics, since Bad Robot is involved with their creation, I don't see a conflict there.

But in any case, that is a lot different from CBS using conceptual imagery from the Kelvin Movies whenever They like.
