Why have Jews been hated so much throughout history?

I am not saying children cannot be bigots, I am disputing your statement that it is easier for a child to learn bigotry than it is to learn tolerance. I mean, we've failed before we've started according to you, in that case!

It's misleading to single out the Jews as the only or most persecuted people. Gypsies probably have a worse time of it both in persecution and in general hostility from most other people for example.

Jews are just the most well acknowledged persecuted people, nothing more.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.

If you mean, 'we will never completely eliminate prejudice,' then I would agree.

If you mean, 'we will never be able to control prejudice, and meliorate its effects,' then I would disagree.

We will never live in a perfect society, free from injustice. A perfect society is like the speed of light: we can approach it, but never reach it. From the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made.

But we can, with a little luck and a lot of hard work by people of good will, live in a good society, in which injustice is uncommon.

Most children have to be taught to be good. They are not wonderfully innocent beings.

In this they are like JEWS.

(That last part was a joke. I've noticed recently "jew" being tossed around as an insult by people, including some who otherwise seemed pleasant.)

Calling someone a Jew as an insult is not new by any means. It's probably one of the oldest existing insults too, given the history of the Jewish people.

Yeah, but it has come back into fashion as of late, especially among the pre-teens/early teens.

The two main reasons for the hatred of the Jews have already been cited: The characterization of them as being responsible for the death of Jesus Christ and the fact that they were allowed to charge interest for loans when Christians weren't. After that, it sort of took on a life of its own.

Reasons Jews are hated...

1.) Killing Jesus

2.) Calling yourself 'God's chosen people' sounds a little snobbish

3.) The 'blood libel' verse from the Gospels

4.) People are jealous of them for being better Entertainers, Bankers and Businessmen

5.) The 'If you aren't Jewish, you aren't shit' mentality many Jewish Israelis have in their native land

6.) Thinking they are entitled to some land because God supposedly promised it to them in a book attributed to Moses thousands of years ago

7.) Minorities usually are hated, regardless of who they are or where they are in the world. (German people are known to be rather hateful Barbarians anyway... :p)

Need I go further?

I don't know if it was supposed to be humorous, but some comments on it:

It was actually the Romans, innit?

2.) Calling yourself 'God's chosen people' sounds a little snobbish
That's parochial. A lot of nation called themselves "God's chosen people": Romans were Mars's chosen people. Icelanders were Odin's chosen people. Japanese were Amaterasu's chosen people. More recently, America have sometime pictured herself as God's nation, and you can't go more Godchosen than Saudi Arabia.

4.) People are jealous of them for being better Entertainers, Bankers and Businessmen
That's debatable (and quite stereotypical). No people have some kind of inbred skill or ability. Jewish culture might stress more on personal achievements and financial security than others, but it's just a consequence of being persecuted for such a long time. They are not inherently better at something.

5.) The 'If you aren't Jewish, you aren't shit' mentality many Jewish Israelis have in their native land
Again, that's true for virtually any nation. From the "America, fuck yeah!" mentality to any kind of jingoism.

6.) Thinking they are entitled to some land because God supposedly promised it to them in a book attributed to Moses thousands of years ago
Manifest destiny. I don't need to go further than that.

This actually very true.

(German people are known to be rather hateful Barbarians anyway... :p)
Funnyness debatable, given that Anti-semitism was rampant in all Europe (and some US) at that time.

Bigotry must be learned. Children are not born with it.

You know what children ARE born with? The desire to hit other children and take their toys. The concept of 'sharing' and 'not-hitting' must both be taught.

This is why I hate this "children are born perfect" kind of stuff. If we just went with kids' natural instincts we'd all be murderers by age 10, I have no doubt.

I know this is off-topic, but this kind of thing bothers me. We're not born perfect...far from it.

Scotland is one of the few countries where they have historically been welcomed and not discriminated against. Why, I don't know.

The scotch, probably. :p

But seriously, i have no idea why and it really saddens me. I have befriended a Jewish family several years ago, and they've pretty much adopted me.

I'd just like to get VERY serious and solemn for a moment. My last name is Hauck, and I've been told that its a very German name. I've google-searched my surname & come upon several past atrocities commited against The Global Jewish Community, among others by persons with my surname. Walter Hauck is the one that seems to keep popping up most frequently, an SS Officer.

I'd like to take this moment to bow my head, with my hands folded in front of me to apologize to the Global Jewish Community for these Crimes Against Humanity. I feel great shame and remorse by surname-association, especially in a time when we're supposed to be able to come forward and (SINCERELY) say "I'm/We're Sorry."

This apology, I acknowledge and respect, that it in no way makes up for these acts of genocide. But in 2009, I'd like to come forward and say that I wish to try to begin the long process of mending fences. I'd like to prove that not all Germans or Canadians/Americans of German descent are evil/cold.

My hope is that one day in the future The Global Jewish Community will find it in their hearts to forgive the German People for these past acts of undiluted Nazi hatred.

Again, please let me reiterate, "I'm sorry." I apologize on my own behalf, as well as apologize from the bottom of my family's heart and also on the behalf of my entire generation. Let me include another apology on the behalf of those yet to be. I don't hate Jews, and I'm hoping you don't hate me either. Let me pledge that my generation will never let any such atrocities occur again under any circumstances. Your loved ones and your loss will always be remembered.

Only the sardonic quip about the Germans.

They were merely the instrument the Sanhedrin used to commit the crime.

Who's more famous for this opinion? Hebrews or anyone else? Making claims like that leads to trouble. That's one reason why I leave God out of politics.

The bigots and Anti-semites are the ones who hold that view. I just laugh at the jokes based on the stereotypes, which even Jews will occasionally tell.

Again, that's true for virtually any nation. From the "America, fuck yeah!" mentality to any kind of jingoism.
"America, fuck yeah!" was part of a movie from the South Park creators, right?

Manifest destiny. I don't need to go further than that.
I would. America would have expanded sooner or later, regardless of James K. Polk's actions.

(German people are known to be rather hateful Barbarians anyway... :p)

Germans really are Barbarians. That's not me Bullshitting you. Also, with their ruthless efficiency and special brand of insanity, they tend to take things to some pretty illogical extremes. That includes hatred and mistrust of strange minority groups.

hellsgate, that's very gracious and nice of you, but you personally have nothing to feel guilty about, needn't apologize, and don't need anyone's forgiveness, because you haven't done anything wrong. that said, i (as a Jew) appreciate your gesture. let's hope things continue to improve.

Didn't most European Jews, especially in Eastern Europe live in poverty for many centuries? I doubt that money lending thing was much more than a stereotype to begin with, since I'd guess that only a few privileged Jews actually had money to lend.

what happened is that Jews were prohibited from owning land, meaning that they couldn't enter traditional professions like farming, etc, so many of them tended to enter finance, such as being money-lenders, since it was one of the only professions open to them, and since Christians tended to find it distasteful.

msbae, the topic was going remarkably well given the subject matter until you had to push it with your comments about Jews and Germans that seem to be personal feelings of your own stated as fact rather than an examination of why you feel Jews have been persecuted. Nothing you said was warnable, but dial it back and use some common sense before posting.
