Why do ghosts always wear clothes?

Translation for Americans: lift = elevator.

Actually I think we use lift as well in America. I do think though we separate the two. Elevator is more fancy. Lift are just like elevators but older and in worst conditions and mostly used in factories instead of other types of buildings.

I'm not sure I've ever heard "lift" used in conversation to mean elevator here in Canada, but it's possible it may happen somewhere in the country.

But realistically, we're probably all Trek fans here. So we know what "lift" means, because that's the term that survived into the future to become the "turbo-" version! ;)

I think in the United States we say "lift" to mean like an elevator with no walls or door, like a platform you stand on that goes up or down like one level or something and might just have a railing for safety.

I don't believe in ghosts at all, and like I'm going to sound like a bad Catholic for saying this, but I don't believe in angels either. My belief is our universe is governed by physical laws which are absolute. Oh dear, I just can't reconcile it in my mind, you know?

If I was to ever use ghosts in a story, I'd treat them more like an imprint or echo rather than some sort of spirit. I wouldn't believe ghosts are like some conscious being, but just sort of like some sort of after-image, like you know how sometimes when you turn off your television, for just a few seconds you can still sort of see what you were watching? Yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking, so in that case a ghost would still appear as she did in real life, clothes and behaviors and all. So you could have a jogging ghost wearing clothes because that's her image imprinted.

If ghosts were to exist, it could be that they do/must conform to physical laws. Maybe the "energy can't be destroyed, it just changes form" law or something.

That would solve the human part but not the clothes part. It's not like clothes die. Unless clothes were made out of animal. That would suck to be a animal ghost where you have to spend maybe eternity as a jacket or fancy pair of shoes.

You aren't the first to ask that question about clothes. One proposed theory is that the whole ghost projection is from the entity itself, how it wants to appear, which assumes a certain amount of cognition, which is also another question. It's all basically a thought exercise. There can be no actual scientific answers at this time because there is no way to conduct verifiable scientific tests .

I have no explanation for the really creepy ghost stories out there (other than Ambien) but I don't particularly believe them either.
I'd guess some of them can be chalked up to hallucinations.
As to why they wear clothes, it could just be a projection of the viewer. You would find it extremely awkward to come across a naked ghost, so your mind just imagines that they're dressed.

At my Aunt's house they have always said there was a ghost there.
You can sometimes hear footsteps on the stairs from the basement to the kitchen.
I've heard it my cousins all heard it my aunt and uncle have heard it.
It sounds like someone walking up the stairs.
But there isn't anyone there.
And yes, we've heard it as adults too, so it's not just my uncle or someone tricking us.

Also my mom died but she had worked at a company that my cousin and her husband owned, I had worked there briefly, and my aunt worked there.
My cousin, her husband, my aunt and another man that worked there all heard a person in the other room at times working.
They'd hear stuff moving around and footsteps.
Also later my cousin hired a person to work there and she heard the sounds too. (She told my cousin about it)
Everyone of course had walked into the other area to be sure that some person hadn't snuck into the building. There was never anyone there.
I believe in ghosts.

In York, people have claimed to see Roman legionaries walking on the path of an old Roman road in the basement of a building. However, because that road was a couple of feet below the current surface level, only the upper half of the apparitions were visible. I like the interpretation that ghosts could be recordings but I can't envisage how images could be formed without a coherent light source such as a laser - sound and vibration are more tractable.

Our senses can deceive us.

Like that time when I was a teenager and I saw Sean Connery driving a Ford Taurus wagon down a main road in Suburbia, USA.

I saw Santa Clause, it was summer time.
He was driving a red Jaguar convertible.
But he was as real as could be. He was stopped at a light.

Well he certainly gets around... he also drives a city bus in my hometown!

Anyone ever consider that Santa is a ghost? I mean he was based on a real human being. That human being surely has died by now and thus who is to say his spirit isn't still here on earth.

Jason

Maybe ghosts got tired of wearing the boring plain white bedsheets. They may have become more fashion conscious now that there are so many ghost hunters around.

Seriously, @Jayson1, the next time you encounter whatever it was that you saw, snap a picture of it. I am going to go out on a limb and say that I don't necessarily doubt your story.
