What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Torres was a more interesting character than Seven of Nine. I like Seven a great deal but IMO Torres had the more interesting backstory and I liked her insecurity about her Klingon heritage and I also loved the romance she had with Tom Paris. I don't think she was given as many interesting episodes as Seven but I still really liked the character

And did we need the Miradorn, Tzenkethi, and the Breen, when we already had the Talarians, Jarada, and the Sheliak? Or the Tholians, Zalkonians, and the Gorn? The Conspiracy parasites, Kzinti, and, hell, the First Federation? Whatever happened to Nagilum and his people, and the trans dimensional aliens in "Schisms" aliens, and others?

No, we didn't need them but neither do I have a problem with that. The galaxy is huge, and the Federation would have had neighbours in 3 dimensions, not just 2. So there's room for all of them. But I agree that there were enough species they could've revisited.

I love them all, and now that they’re established I think more should be done with them. But that’s my point: more could have been done with the ones already established at that point. Trek’s gotten too accustomed to dealing with monocultures. Like the monoclimates on Star Wars planets, it’s unrealistic and limiting. It takes on a life of its own and becomes, yes, kinda racist. Star Wars is swell, but I’d like more sci-fi in my sci-fi. And non-humanoids lol

I hated Vic Fontaine episodes and DS9s idea of cool makes me laugh. Oh, and all his old-fashioned love advice. They knew it back then.

The ridiculous suit.

Also, women hardly play around in the holodeck. That one time it was as princesses to be rescued - yuck. When men go in there its old-fashioned stuff or to get a date. Why do they have such an affinity for times when women were only receptionists and damsels? I will give Data credit for playing Sherlocke Holmes but he is an android. Not a red-blooded human male.

The "pricesses to be rescued" scenario was played out by two of the most well-rounded, successful, and powerful women Trek has ever depicted. Both spent their days commanding space stations and starships, frequently besting men (even Klingon men) in combat, performing intensive scientific research, and generally being anything but "damsels in distress." Is it so unrealistic that maybe, just once in a while, they might want to go play act a character that is the complete opposite just for fun?

It's as if you don't think I know the obvious about these women. That matters not. Its like wondering if Sisko wanted to play the faithful black sidekick for fun and as a change. Plus, its hella boring waiting around to be rescued. No matter what century. But if you connect it to what I said about the men's holodeck activities. Its very telling. It's also so gender based too. I mean why did they just maybe want to go to a Beatles concert? Or play Xena Warrior princess if they were sick of that century? Oh, and Kira did not even enjoy herself.

Well, yeah, we see Janeway playing the new teacher in a subordinate position in a Victorian manor (I think she was supposed to fall in love with the lord of the manor eventually, but that particular holodeck storyline was abandoned so we never got to see that), but not Chakotay (or Riker or Picard for that matter) doing something similar as far as I recall.

If they had wanted to go to a Beatles concert, THEN I would have judged them. Gah. One of the most overrated groups in the history of music.

'Honor Among Thieves' is horribly boring. I was really looking forward to it because people loved it so much. A lot of bad acting. But Colm Meany is not as bad. And he is usually great. Very cheesy attempt at Noir. Big let down and overrated.

TBH, they are just perhaps the most popular band of all time and that's why I chose them. Like some of their songs but not a superfan. Led Zeppelin? Actually, I can see Worf taking Dax to a concert.

I have wondered if Janeway behind the scenes was supposed to have continued with that holodeck adventure or if she dropped it owing to not finding it interesting.

I don't know. Given that we never see it again after Persistence of Vision perhaps her experiences in that episode (e.g. the hallucinations of ms. Templeton attacking her with a knife) made her drop it.

Also, I see now that my I think she was supposed to fall in love with the lord of the manor eventually is somewhat ambiguous. I didn't mean to say that I think that the Voyager writers intended Janeway herself to fall in love with the Lord Burleigh holodeck character, just that the holodeck story seemed set up to lead to those two characters in the story getting together (just as other holodeck scripts were set up to let the player become the hero of the story).

Any particular reason why?

Yeah, it feels forced to me. The framing device doesn’t work. I don’t find Old Jake’s conversations with the aspiring author to be, well, particularly inspired.

Not growing up with a father figure, I used to assume “The Visitor” didn’t hit for me the same way it does for others because I lack a point of real relation. And that might still be part of it, certainly. But on my most recent rewatch, my takeaway was that it’s got the potential for a good story. It doesn’t get there. A deep reworking of that framer would have helped.

Also, I realize there’s nothing that could have been done about it, but what a weird timeline this Jake grew up in - the Dominion never actually attacks outright? The Klingons keep being bullies for years and years, and it all blows over re: the Gamma Quadrant? An odd potentiality! Taken on its own, “The Visitor” would suggest to any first-time DS9 viewer that there’s really not much to worry about, going forward. I know that’s getting unnecessarily meta, but it kind of hurts my head, haha.

Obviously, I’m aware that I am in the slimmest of minorities on this one. Most adore the episode. I’ve only ever met one other person who dislikes it. Heck, I’m not even sure I dislike it, so much as I find it to be decidedly average.
