What Amazes Me

Not what happened with me, and I saw the film three times. Once on opening day, next day at the Imax, and third a week later. There was no cheering. Not saying there wasn't any cheering in your theaters, but I certainly didn't get any. And why would I want to cheer for them anyways for destroying an enemy that can't do anything? Anyone who cheers for that might as well cheer for the kids who pluck wings off of flies.

British audiences tend to cheer when something is ridiculous. The scene where Brosnan's James Bond sky dived into a plane and then flew off is the biggest cheer I've ever heard. In Trek, we'd have cheered if they'd accidentally fired Keenser out with the torpedoes.

Three times!! Seriously? Three times? :guffaw: Good lord man! :guffaw::guffaw:

Well, this film being my #1 most anticipated movie ever since it's announcement, I'm surprised I didn't see it more times than that. This kind of stuff happens to you. You see it once, think it's great. See it again and it's mediocre. Third time? That's when it really fell apart for me.

I saw it once in the theatre and a few times on DVD. You should have stopped at one and saved yourself all the aggravation. Lord knows I wish I had seen TMP only once.

The writers wanted a moment where the audience cheered loudly for Kirk and Spock. I saw the movie in cinemas six times, and each time the destruction of Nero, planet-killer, murderer of billions of Vulcans, got a resounding cheer.

I'm not sure if the audience would have cheered them for merely taking Nero prisoner or watching his ship pass through a black hole.

Sad state of the audience, isn't it?
How so? People like to see villians get their just deserts by the hero. Been that way since the first stories told. That usally means the bad guys gets blown away ( at times literally) The alternative being:

Nero and his crew are beamed aboard the Enterprise

KIRK
Book'em Spock!

Nero and his crew are taken away by Spock and a security detail.

CUT TO

Nero in a prison jumpsuit and manacles stares at the camera and snarls.

ANNOUNCER (V.O.)

On October 24th, 2258 trial was held in the Superior Court for the United Federation of Planets.

Nero was found guilty on one account of genocide, one account of attempted genocide and 8 accounts of destruction of Federation property.

He is now serving a life sentence at the Tantalus Rehabilitation Colony and will eligable for parole in 25 years

END CREDITS

Yes, this would have been the ONLY OTHER way to solve it.

Seriously, there's something wrong with this picture.

But is it something audiences would respond to? The dramatic payoff seems a bit flat.

One way that would save the scene for me personally was if Nero opened fire on the Enterprise while being sucked into the black hole. That'd turn the whole execution (which is out of character for Kirk and Spock (and btw. where was McCoy with his higher morale? "You can't execute him and his crew, Jim, even if he's a goddamned murderer") into self defense.

And I also thought the Enterprise firing her weapons felt sloppily tacked on. The whole scene feels like "oh, we're near the end, and the Enterprise never fired a torpedo once, damn.". And even then it's not over with Nero being killed, the black hole has to suck the Enterprise in for another 30 seconds of thrill. I didn't like the scene at all.

Better would have been to see both ships trying to escape, but the Narada - being badly damaged by the black hole forming inside her - falling back, exploding before getting sucked into the event horizon, giving the Enterprise somehow a chance to escape.

Gravity would have prevented the Narada from firing weapons, although that would have been a cool effect to see. I can't think of anything the Enterprise could have done to save her or her crew. They just needed to establish that there was a risk of some part of her surviving and passing through another wormhole to justify blasting her. Or as you say, detonate Narada's engines and ride that wave with shields and warp core intact.

like having their first priority being that to save Romulas from the super nova

That's a dead issue, I'm afraid. As a supposed criticism of the film it is a complete fallacy. It only cheated death for a while because the DVD wasn't out and people don't have 100% recall of film dialogue upon walking out of the theater. This is something which Nero intends to do as explicitly stated in film dialogue; furthermore, he has 129 years to do it, so calling it a "first priority" is nonsensical.

And it's still Romulus.

prepare an invasion against the federation, and when they seize the red matter from Spock, freaking invade!

:guffaw:Did you leave in the middle of the film or something? Because... that's exactly what happened.

How are you defining "invade"?

Well, from the two parter Next Generation episode titled "Unification", the plot revolved around a scheme by the Romulans to sneak in troops through the Neutral Zone with the intent to invade and conquer Vulcan. Since it's been established that Vulcans are distant cousins to the Romulans, it would make sense that they'd want to conquer a world that was once theres, or at least stop their cousins giving the Federation benefits against them.

So the idea of Nero destroying all the federation worlds, including Vulcan does more disservice to the Romulan Empire than it does to benefit them. I bet the Romulans would be ticked off if they learned some jerk just out right destroyed their home of origin that they've been depicted as wanting to take back! Sure, the Empire won't have enemies, but what the heck are they going to do with a bunch of empty space?

Nero's not the sanest bulb in the box.
