Walking Dead Season 7 Discussion - Spoilers possible!

"Hostiles and Calamities"--

Solid Eugene-centric episode. So, he's back to his "doctor" lie as part of his survival instinct. That could fall apart the second anyone needs serious medical attention.

Sherry escaped, but I do hope she's gone for good, so Dwight will need to think about how his bidding on running into her again meant he set up Dr. Carson for no reason.

The wives--a problem waiting to happen. They are relentless--and it was clear they wanted the death drug for Negan.

Umm, Eugene never claimed to be a medical doctor just that he was a doctor, he has a doctorate in sciences which could be true and not entirely part of his "lie." The lie was more he had/knew of a cure for the walker sickness.

But his lie (instead of just saying he was a bullet-maker and nothing else)was enough for Negan to (ultimately) think he could kill Carson, so no matter that Negan was at fault for misinterpreting the lie, Eugene opened the door for Negan to drop the responsibility on him, and being a prisoner under threat of being "Lucilled," he will have to act a s medical doctor or face doubt & judgement from Negan.

Talking Dead the actor said the death of the doctor was strategic...which I could see to take out the actual medical doctor,so when the war happens, Negan's men will die (while the Hilltop might be able to save some rebels). Also, Eugene has those poison pills...which I think was a test from Negan. Had Eugene gave them to the wives, Negan would've said he's a traior or something, and whacked him. But Negan said they only gave good reports, despite their telling him he's a good man (which would have been a way to "expose" the potential rebel).

So I think we will see the pill again...probably to kill one of more of Negan's top people. .. or could expose Eugene later, when someone takes the pill and dies unexpectedly

That's what happens when you take advice from talking to a bat.

Some viewers think Negan is just going to grab the other Dr. Carson from Hilltop (apparently they were brothers but I don't remember anything in-show mentioning that), but the way the shot was framed it seemed like he was talking about Eugene.

Was it though? Or just a test of Eugene's malleability? Or Negan is simply that overconfident. Great eppy.

I took it as one of Negan's tests. Everybody at the Saviors' compound is scared shitless of Negan and keeps every activity logged in ledgers and notebooks, so I don't see his wives doing anything as ballsy as trying to poison him. We saw the shitstorm that erupted when Sherry helped Dwight escape. There's no way Negan's other wives are doing this on their own initiative.

I also don't believe Eugene is playing Negan. Eugene feels safest when there's an authority figure in place. Negan seems to appreciate Eugene's talents and reward Eugene with some Yar's Revenge, whereas everybody in Alexandria treats Eugene like a shitstain. I admit I laughed pretty hard at the part where Eugene is commandeering all the random crap from the woman after declaring himself Chief Engineer for Negan

I thought this was a fun episode it was nice to get some depth into Eugene as he’s not had a whole lot of story on him so this was his episode like the blah one in the S7A with Tara at Oceanside. It was an okay episode and I like the actress who plays Tara but I just don’t think she’s an interesting enough character or has enough “acting practice” (I wouldn’t say she’s a bad actor) to carry an episode. She’s better standing in the background being kind of snarky and funny.

Josh McDermitt, however, has a lot of charisma (as seen on TTD, not so much in Eugene) and he plays Eugene so well that he can carry an episode. Eugene is a pretty interesting character, largely, because I see a lot of myself in him. Smart, but socially awkward. I think I’d be just as “uncomfortable” with the wives as he was just from them being gorgeous women nevermind them being the “wives” of a lunatic.

I really liked Eugene’s little science experiments with the wives and I suspect he does have a good deal of knowledge, for all we know he may very well have a Doctorate and been part of the Human Genome Project (just not to the level he implies and has implied.)

It’s interesting that when Negan throws the doctor into the furnace he looks at Eugene and the things he says sort-of implies that he thinks Eugene could replace the doctor. If Eugene is “a doctor” it’s an academic doctorate, not a medical one; and even if it is a medical one and he really did play some role in the HGP he’s clearly not a practicing clinician and has no use for medical help.

I can say I’m totally on Eugene’s side here. If Negan offered me all of this I’d lap it up in a second and figure things out later. Eugene is a coward (though he seemed to drop them a little bit when the herd was in Alexandria and Rick went out there to slaughter them, and then there’s biting Dwight’s dick and the misdirection he caused in that ambush. So he can step up when it calls for it, hell him stepping up and saying he made the bullet took guts because he seemed pretty convinced Negan was going to kill him.

We hear Negan say they’re going to try the “good cop” route on Eugene to “indoctrinate” him into “being Negan” there’s torturing into submission like he tried with Daryl, fearing into submission like he did with Dwight, and with people like Eugene? Give them the world. Give them a nice room, nice food, and some women to hang out with. (Honestly, I would’ve expected Negan to allow Eugene a little action. Not that’s he likely take it.)

Eugene is doing what’s easiest and best for him and hasn’t “turned” on the group and will likely fight in their favor if/when the battle comes.

I really expected in this episode for us to finally get Dwight’s flip, but he’s still on that damn line.

Negan’s red-haired wife? He knows how to pick them!

I’d say Eugene is Lawful Neutral, I did get a bit of a chuckle out that part.

If it was Dwight's strategy to get Carson killed, then it was poor, as he might end up needing medical care when forced to fight with his fellow Saviors, and Eugene is no physician.

I can see one of the protagonists taking it when they cannot take anymore (or cause more tragedy). Eugene, Carol and/or Rosita could be candidates.

While his mistreatment at the ASZ is a matter of fact (most often initiated by Rosita), that would not be enough for Eugene to join the man who forced him to witness the murder of his friends. That would make Eugene utterly devoid of any moral fiber--a walking parasite. I don't think Eugene falls into the parasite category, so he's trying to play Negan for as long as possible.

Regarding Eugene's alignment comment. Most people here seem to be missing that he was qualifying his earlier statement of "I am not good in any sense of the term" by following with the "neither lawful, chaotic, or neutral". As the common description in Dungeons and Dragons for a character's alignment would be for example: lawful good or chaotic good, or neutral good.

Right. But Eugene was being a bit dramatic since if he's not "Good" then he's "Evil" (or on the Neutral scale) and he's clearly not "evil" and he's selling himself short seeing himself in the Neutral scale. (Lawful Neutral, True Neutral, Chaotic Neutral) He's "Good" but he just doesn't see himself that way in his low state.

Why would Negan think he could replace a physician with a scientist?

Amazing! Negan and Bruce Wayne are nuts for the same reason! Who knew?

If that letter really has turned Dwight away from Negan for good, then I'm not sure he really cares about whether there'll be medical attention for him or not. The love of his life basically just told him he was a monster who scared her so much she'd rather live alone in constant fear of zombie ambush, and it was all because of Negan.

Other than ignoring it all and staying with Negan, there are really only two responses to that: leave the saviors entirely or go back and actively obstruct/destroy Negan's group, and if Dwight was just going to leave there would've been no reason for him to come back at all.

Comic Dwight works against Negan, but his TV counterpart seems like he's setting up personal disasters based on X factors not native to the comic. For example, he did not care for Sherry's sympathetic attention paid to Daryl--and it cannot be a stretch to think she might be with Dixon (in hiding), or that he will focus on (misplaced) revenge against Daryl for Sherry's departure. That's enough for Dwight to support Negan's revenge and get himself maimed (where he would need that doctor I referred to) or killed, never living to be a new leader post Negan.
