You mean "cool"? That isn't really contemporary slang; it's been used as a vernacular term of approval going back to the early 1930s in African-American vernacular and WWII in more general vernacular. A term that's been in use in English for over 75 years is probably not going to vanish.
Besides, there is onscreen precedent.
On the other hand, neither Tom nor B'Elanna has ever really been known for calm, reasoned analysis, and they are both new parents, so I can believe that they'd overreact.

I thought that was the way all living beings are hard-wired: No matter what the language is, among the first words you pick up are the ones that you're told you shouldn't say.
Cambridge is based on Hugh Laurie, more specifically the character of "House, MD" who was given a pass on being a jackass because he's a brilliant doctor if a lousy human being.It's already starting to wear on me that everyone seems to come around to his unorthodox methods and give him a pass on being a jackass. I don't quite buy that.
