Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

You mean "cool"? That isn't really contemporary slang; it's been used as a vernacular term of approval going back to the early 1930s in African-American vernacular and WWII in more general vernacular. A term that's been in use in English for over 75 years is probably not going to vanish.

Besides, there is onscreen precedent.

You're probably right about "cool" being a piece of slang that's proven its longevity already. Though I think Voyager, for some reason, was more prone to slang overall -- I'm trying to think of any TNG or DS9 characters saying things like "cool" or "sucks" and I can't recall. (I think I'll take a look at the resource above to find out for sure!)

On the other hand, neither Tom nor B'Elanna has ever really been known for calm, reasoned analysis, and they are both new parents, so I can believe that they'd overreact.

Very true -- it's not as though the storyline was out of character for them! I was a bit surprised that B'Elanna changed gears so quickly and agreed to remain on Voyager without a fight of any kind. But again it's a case of parenthood overriding previous character tendencies -- I think she learned her lesson about isolation when Miral got so sick.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

I finally got my hands on the book, and after reading this thread I can't wait to get started. I just want to finish the story I'm on in Prophecy & Change first.

Who's idea was it that the baby would randomly use inappropriate Klingon words? Made me LOL.

I thought that was the way all living beings are hard-wired: No matter what the language is, among the first words you pick up are the ones that you're told you shouldn't say.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Finished last night & loved it. Glad to see Chakotay back in the center seat & glad to see the end of the B'Elanna/Klingon saga. I don't mind the tention between Paris & Kim, there's always been some tention here & there on Voyager & the scene at the end w/ them in the holodeck was great.

Nice to see a Fleet Captain again, the only one I remember is Pike.

The Indign were a very interresting group, I hope we learn more about them in the future. I'm also glad to see that communication w/ Starfleet isn't instant over this vast distance

Can't wait for the next installment of Voyager.

It's one of those testing limits things little kids love to do to learn about the world.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Mrs. Beyer is the best thing to happen to VOY, in perhaps ever. I finished Unworthy last night and once again Mrs. Beyer really breathed life into the VOY characters and made them feel real and interesting to me.

However, I like Full Circle more. Though things seemed to actually come more full circle in Unworthy than the first book. The Indign were an interesting species, but I didn't think they were all that threatening, so there wasn't much dramatic tension for me when they attacked, even en masse. Meegan was much more of a threat and I'm curious to see what havoc she wreaks in the DQ. The Species 8472 twist was quite the surprise. For a moment, I thought that Eden might be one, but for it to be Batiste...wow. Definitely wasn't expecting that. I hope that isn't the last we see of Species 8472. Perhaps Mrs. Beyer can improve upon them like she did the rest of the VOY characters.

Not sure how I feel about a budding Cambridge/Seven romance. I can see him liking her, but I'm not sure why she would like him. Cambridge is a fun character, but he only works in small doses. It's already starting to wear on me that everyone seems to come around to his unorthodox methods and give him a pass on being a jackass. I don't quite buy that. I enjoyed the Cambridge/Chakotay relationship in FC more. Here, I thought Chakotay was way to laid back with Cambridge, and a lot of things.

I liked where Torres and Paris wound up, and how her return affected Harry. Also liked the potential Conlon/Harry match. So, there was a lot of good character work on display here.

I do wish that they had made Eden a Commodore or Admiral though.

Cambridge is based on Hugh Laurie, more specifically the character of "House, MD" who was given a pass on being a jackass because he's a brilliant doctor if a lousy human being.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Actually I found Cambridge to be much more agreeable and reasonable than House. Which makes sense, since someone who acted like House would've been drummed out of Starfleet long ago. Cambridge may have an attitude by Starfleet standards, but he's much more sedate and respectful for the chain of command than House has ever been.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

finished the book last night and wanted to once again congratulate Kirsten on what is (combined with Full Circle) the absolute best VOY story I have ever come across.

As with Full Circle, I finished Unworthy a VOY-R fan, and can't wait to read more about the crew.

Well done!

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

I have to say I enjoyed the book also. I am looking forward to see what else Kirsten has planned for Voyager.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

^Nothing yet. There won't be another Voyager book until, at least, 2011. And we're not even sure if Kirsten will be the next author on the VOY-R. It could any one of several talented writers that Pocket has in their...ahem...pocket ;).

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

I do agree that there are alot of very talented writers at Pocket books. So Mr. Paris are you writing something or have I missed buying a star trek book.

So, it's confirmed that there are no new current-universe Voyager books for another year, or is that just speculation?

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

^There are no VGR books on the 2010 schedule as it currently stands. However, the schedule is always subject to modification. There's always a chance that additional books could be added or that one book could be switched with another. Although given the current lack of movement on the new-editor front, I wouldn't hold my breath for any new 2010 projects beyond what's already been contracted and announced.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

I'm currently reading the book; it's good. (Actually things have started to get interesting with the impulse drives suddenly activating by themselves)....

*shiver*

Some quick thoughts:

*I found the Meegan/Doctor love 'thang' interesting....and it seems like Meegan is not entirely humanoid.

*Asfarah is pretty cool (and is seemingly 'hot'): Ebony-skinned, aqualine nose, looking way younger than her 50+ years; statuesque, toned; wears a 24th century version of the duty skirt and boots every now and then...

She has a fair, calm, demeanor. {It'll be interesting to see how she deals with the pain-in-the-ass Batiste....

*Batiste-He's annoying; but he's an annoying character that a reader like me is interested in. I want to see how the crew deals with his overbearing attitude as events unfold.

*Paris and Kim need to grow up; both have bigger responsibilities now, they should act like it. [The fun is seeing if they actually DO grow up].

*There was thankfully a brief encounter with Neelix.

*I like the members of the Hawking and the Galen as well....

*Hugh Cambridge is pretty cool (and direct, in a good way) too...
