Uhura trailer released

Celia gives an update on the ''hair'' debate, guess word has reached her ear as well as the black feminity issue. I knew this topic wont go away so soon but i never expected the actress to address it.

I can understand her POV especially when this is a show she is part off but I disagree with a lot of what she said, as a person who is of African decent myself.

Also Celia, you are right that Nichelle and Zoe had long hair or wore wigs, but I would like to also say that many black women in africa by 90% have what we call long kinky hair that reached their back. they perm it or relax it or keep it natural via turning it to Afro.

Celia is coming from the right place as she is part of the show, however I am happy she is also aware of how seriously we take the black feminity issue and how we worry when we feel, it is been lost. I still dont like the look on her because i dont personally think it fits her face structure, if i was her hair stliyst, i would have considered that as well as representing black feminity.

Whitney Houston wore her natural hair in shoop video and that was the most beautiful she ever looked,

so celia, yeah you are right that black women dont need wigs or long hair but at the same time, bald low cut is not the main norm of black women either and I also want to see that get represented, if not more because that is how most black women were their hair and it is a big part of their feminity.

if SNW last for like 5 seasons, hopefully we see celia get the varied hairstyle of black women, especially the kinky straight relaxed style, which is the most popular style for black women both in africa and the usa.
Here we go again.

So, Burnham then.

Celia is starting out as Cadet Uhura. Cadet's are not know for having the same flexibility as other officers. I would not read too much in to the hair subject. Not yet, anyway.

But, what do I know. I'm like the ancient Egyptians and despise body hair in all forms.

Uhura's hair changed through the years. It went from bangs in earlier episodes to more of a modified beehive in later seasons then an Afro cut in TMP and by TUC was basically 1990s professional Mom hair.

honestly Nichelle is just gorgeous in any style, shape or form inside and out. the show did her injustice that they did nothing with her looks or even character, as she was a blank slate. however, that was the racism of the 60s. Also let not forget that in TOS, Even Spock (though under influence) commented on her beauty and grace.

SNW has the opportunities to correct all the wrongs and injustice they did with her and I am at least happy, the celia is aware that uhura is meant to be graceful and beautiful in the most feminine of ways and anything away from that, is in fact taking a lot away from black women feminity.

This is what Celia said in quote
https://tvline.com/2022/04/25/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-uhura-hair-celia-rose-gooding/

Now we’re in [2022], and I think the iconic short Caesar cut has been a thing for Black men for a long time, but we are slowly but surely as a community getting closer and closer to widening the ideals of what Black femininity looks like,” she adds. “Having an opportunity to take on the iconic character and still give her this layer of incredible grace… and also have her have this incredibly gorgeous short cut look — it just feels so right to me. Even with the Dora Milaje in Black Panther, their femininity was never questioned, but they all had real short cuts.”
Gooding notes that she is “craving to be a part of the representation I want to see in the world, and so it was very important for me to not put a wig on, to not have really long, straight, big curly hair. I could have a beehive, or I could have hair down my back, or I could have no hair and rock a bald cap, and I would still be the incredibly iconic feminine embodiment of Uhura that I think everyone is really excited to see.”

So I am happy that i know Celia will play her that away because anything from that would be disrespectful to the character. glad, celia calmed some of our fears that uhura feminity will be stripped away.

if some want masculine female characters, that is fine, but they need to create a new character for that. Uhura was perfect in appearance and presentation, she does not need to be mended or updated in anyway

Let the church say AMEN!!!!!

Ms Celia wear your hair however you damn well like! You are not there to represent every black women who wear locs (like myself), corn rows, box braids, pressed hair, relaxed hair, a big ass afro, a TWA (a teeny weeny afro), weaves or completely bald because you only have one head so you can only choose one, so choose what you want!
Thankfully the western world is slowly getting better, and does not run screaming for the hills when a black women wears her hair texture the way it grows out her own damn head and about damn time! (And even if our own hair is still not acceptable, then society can go screw itself on that front!
Rock that TWA!

Seriously? No one has stated that, indicated that or expresses an interest in that and even if they did so what? IDIC doesn't just apply to things we like.

Really? All this discussion about a haircut? It's a perfectly nice haircut that suits the actress. And even if you don't like her hairstyle, who knows whether she'll even continue to wear her hair like that past Season 1? Just look at how many hairstyles Sonequa Martin-Green went through during the various seasons of DISC.
Plus, it's nice that they no longer force the actresses to wear wigs. Aren't 6 seasons of Troi sporting her gigantic 1980s wigs (that didn't even suit her all that much a lot of the time) enough?

Uhura looks great, all versions of them do. I think the best Uhura was the one we never got to see, Ms Lupita Nyong'o. As for the fans who think SNW Uhura' hair looks 'too masculine' they need to stop drinking the kool aid of what is considered masculine and feminine beauty in our Western culture. (Put down the damn relaxer box)

Was Lupita Nyong'o in the discussion for the Uhura role (for the Abrams films I'm guessing)? I hadn't heard that before. It's too late now, but I think she would make a great Storm for Marvel. DC cast her as Vixen and give her a solo film.
