There's an entire generation of Trekkies out there for whom ST09 was their childhood introduction to Trek, same way mine was TOS and TNG reruns and DS9 S4/VOY S2!

 

Don't forget the fact there are plenty of new fans for which Star Trek Discovery was their first introduction to Star Trek.

I wasn't going to indulge your nonsense any further and derail the thread, but there are some specific accusations made here that need to be addressed:

- YOU are the only one attempting to "erase" Gooding Uhura's femininity here, not anyone else, so stop projecting your problems onto others.

- I haven't made any such comments about Chapel's "hotness" either on her own in another thread or in comparison to Uhura, so I don't know what the hell you are talking about, nor do I care. The only reason we have even felt it necessary to discuss the issue of appearance and femininity at all is because YOU have forced the issue to be discussed and have forced others to defend Gooding against your spurious and bigoted and sexist attacks, instead of just discussing the actress and the character on their own (non-superficial) merits.

- I don't think the blonde woman is the only or ideal definition or beauty and have said nothing of the sort, nor has that been the attitude of the people here, and I don't think Gooding or Uhura look masculine in the slightest (again, that was YOU saying that) or unattractive or that her looks are part of a conspiracy in order to erase her beauty in favor of the blonde woman, so kindly (but not really kindly) stop putting your shitty fucking outlook on life in other people's mouths.

- You're shocked that the comment sections of a YouTube video have an incredibly bad take on something? The first rule of the internet is don't read the YouTube comment sections. I'm not getting into the back-and-forth here over Gooding's Uhura depiction. But from what I have read, I do want to speak to the issue of Black hairstyles and how acceptance of them has been an issue in Hollywood and the overall society. Just this year, the United States Congress passed the CROWN Act to ban hair discrimination and hopefully that will help change negative perceptions and adverse economic actions for people who have less approved/Eurocentric hairstyles.

Even when it comes to Trek, I recall hearing about how the studio wouldn't let Avery Brooks wear his hair the way he wanted at first, and I've seen some discussion of Sonequa Martin-Green and her changing hairstyles. Every so often I might hear/read about Black actors (generally female) who have had issues with non-Blacks styling their hair, so I think questions raised about hairstyling and if the hairstylists on these projects are in synch with the Black actors, they are styling should not be dismissed out of hand. I'm not saying anyone here is doing that, from what I read, but I do want to make the point.

Celia gives an update on the ''hair'' debate, guess word has reached her ear as well as the black feminity issue. I knew this topic wont go away so soon but i never expected the actress to address it.

I can understand her POV especially when this is a show she is part off but I disagree with some of what she said, as a person who is of African decent myself.

Also Celia, you are right that Nichelle and Zoe had long hair or wore wigs, but I would like to also say that many black women in africa by 90% have what we call long kinky hair that reached their back. they perm it or relax it or keep it natural via turning it to Afro.

Celia is coming from the right place as she is part of the show, however I am happy she is also aware of how seriously we take the black feminity issue and how we worry when we feel, it is been lost. I still dont like the look on her because i dont personally think it fits her face structure. However I hope she does bring the womanly grace the past actress did as she has promised.

Whitney Houston wore her natural hair in shoop video and that was the most beautiful she ever looked, whitney did not need a wig to look pretty.


so celia, yeah you are right that black women dont need wigs or long hair but at the same time, almost bald low cut is not the main look of how black women style their hair and I also want to see that get represented.

if SNW last for like 5 seasons, hopefully we see celia get the varied hairstyle of black women, especially the kinky straight relaxed style, as well as afro or even braids. which are the most popular style for black women both in africa and the usa.
