Trek's future according to Paramount's new owners...

Paramount will go wherever the money is at. The shows will continue to be insanely expensive to produce.

To be fair, Paramount is in the process of destroying CBS News, and will almost certainly do the same post merger with CNN. That said, they have ... external forces ... pushing for this. Absolutely no one is telling them to purposefully castrate Star Trek.

They're a couple of decades late on the "destroying CBS" mission, as it is.

Eh. 60 Minutes was one of the few genuinely profitable broadcast news shows left in the business (made around $250 million in advertising last year), and the changes under the new management have caused ratings to crater (which will probably cause ad rates to crater as well, shortly).

That said, I think David Ellison was fine with sacrificing it as what needed to be destroyed in order to get the merger through. Linear news is, after all, a decaying industry anyway, and he really just wants movie studios.

I don't believe he'll degrade Star Trek by pushing out right-wing slop content - both because right-wing slop content isn't actually popular with viewers, and because he's not actually a conservative himself. Absolute worst case is that we might get something like ENT, which definitely changed the Trekkian ethos a bit to cater to the politics of the W era, but to be honest by the time something new would be off the ground, the political situation is liable to be totally changed again.

Yup.

All the hand ringing and thind are going to shift again as politics do.

Skydance is the production company for Apple's Foundation, which gender-swapped two of the main characters from white dudes to black ladies, and has relatively progressive viewpoints. I'm not particularly worried about Star Trek.

People seem to worry about talking points than actual behaviors.

David has Daddy Larry to run interference with Trump for him.

Larry Ellison has just permanently moved to Palm Beach (he now lives eighteen minutes away from Trump).

Larry (to Trump): "Bruh, I live eighteen minutes from your house. Let's talk." #Satire

Star Trek morphing into a manosphere wet dream because the Ellisons cozied up to Trump to get what they wanted always struck me as hysterical, reactionary nonsense. Trump will be gone shortly and likely be a lame duck for the last stretch of his term; he'll be in the rearview mirror before any new Trek show hits the airwaves.

If they move on from Kurtzman, which seems to be where we're headed, I'm struggling to see Trek return to TV in any form. Just a lot of baggage, super expensive and continued diminishing returns. I won't be surprised to see many franchises fizzle out over the next decade.

Generational nostalgia is quickly becoming a foundation of sand.

According to the rhetoric from certain quarters he will never relinquish power.

It depends on the political landscape afterwards, who replaces him and the global state of things, we in the UK are dangerously close to a similar situation where rich people's racist and xenophobic rhetoric are nearing power.

These corporate billionaire's will want to be in the good graces of whoever is in power. Not that wont switch sides at the slightest change of the breeze.

Populism and fascism take a while to fully get rid of.

The best way to look at what David Ellison is doing is he's offering tribute to the current occupant of the White House. From agreeing to destroy 60 Minutes, to broadcasting/promoting the UFC match on the White House lawn (ugh) it's an attempt to curry favor because the current occupant isn't beyond telling the head of the FCC what to do.

Trump doesn't care about Star Trek. Unless you count a rando tweet from Stephen Miller, there's no evidence anyone in the WH gives two shits.

It might be different if like Elon Musk bought Paramount or something, but thankfully, we're not there.

No more outdoor UFC matches:

Racism and division are how they keep us from rising up against the billionaire class that pull the strings. It's the exact antithesis of what Star Trek preaches. Sadly the world is never going back to what was once normal.
