Trek 09 disapproval questioned.

All over this board I see the bitter hatred poured forth towards Trek 09. I just dont get it, this whole "how dare you" and "you raped my childhood" sentiments just don't make sense. This isn't trying to replace the series' that came before it, instead it is a new chapter in the mythos.

I actually get a chuckle from some of the statements have been posted on here. Please allow me to paraphrase some with the reason I find them funny.

First off is "Chris Pine is no Kirk". And I ask why? Is...it...because...he...can...put..a sentence...together without....Pausing on...every word. Pine did a great job, he was believable and I really hope people caught his little shatner-esque swagger at the end of the film. This goes for the rest of the cast, except Yelchin, he does as bad a russian accent as Koenig.

Second is "How dare they change what I love" Ummmm because Star Trek was a dead property in dire need of a defibrilator. Besides they didn't erase all the old episodes, did they? They wrote a new chapter to continue the legacy into the next century. It's a TV show people not a lifestyle.

The "Abramsprise". Hmm...Saucer, Check. Engineering Hull, Check, 2 Nacelles, Check. Looks like the Enterprise to me. Now is it a perfect design, IMHO no, but is it a "bloated. parody of the original?" No, it is a new storytellers interpretation of a classic, kinda like the new camero, or the new mustang, or the charger, they all kinda look like the old ones but are not exact copies.

A Bad Story, Plot Holes and a villian who sucks. Hmmmm....Plot holes are found in EVERY incarnation of Trek, not just this one. A TOS plot hole for example, In Who Mourns for Adonis, Spock refers to Apollo even tho he was on the E the entire time and never once contacted the crew on the surface due to the comms being jammed. Oh and Apollo as a villian seriously? And I think the biggest plot hole in Star Trek history is Chekov was not on the Enterprise in Space Seed, but Khan "...never forgets a face." As for Bad Story heres a list of a few TOS shows that should be burned at the stake. SPOCKS BRAIN!!!!!, The Way To Eden is right up there as well. Turnabout Intruder, Arena, The Omega Glory The Apple, The Changeling, you get the point. All the Trek incarnations have villians that suck. We have Trelane, Harry Mudd, Nomad, The Aliens from Catspaw, Gorgon, V'ger, Sybok, TNG's Kivas Fajo, Ronin, Pakleds, Soran, Ru'afo and Shinzon. DS9 had The Wadi, Kai Wynn, The Breen. Voyager had....Hell voyager just sucked all the way around. Enterprise had the the Nazi aliens, The Temporal Aliens.etc. So saying Nero was lame just adds him to a very long list of Trek villians that seem less than dynamic.

Now I didn't start this thread to troll, but to just show that Trek can be both Old and New as long as you can accept someone else telling the same story from a newer book.

Same song, different decade. There will always be those who hate the newest take on Star Trek. You get used to it (more or less).

Really? I must have all those folks on "ignore". Maybe I only pay attention to those that agree with me :D

My childhood is utterly thrilled with STXI.

For whatever reason, there are people who think that they and only they know what true Star Trek is and everyone else is completely wrong. Why? Because they're the "true fan!"

It's a bit sad really. I like both the original and the new version myself, just got it on blu-ray so time for a rewatch next weekend!

It's rather ironic that people complain of Yelchin's accent, since he's Russian-born. Even though he speaks flawless American English, his parents probably speak with a Russian accent, so it should be easy enough for him to mimic. I found his Russian accent more convincing than Koenig's, if a bit heavy at times.

People love complaining about accents and don't care if theyr'e right or not. The Enterprise forum had too many threads complainin about Dominic Keating's "fake" English accent, when in fact he was speaking with his natural accent.

Don't worry -- maybe M'Sharak can find that poll thread where 78% of forum denizens said they liked or adored the movie.

When I saw ST:TMP in 1979, I quickly discovered that an active ST fanbase had been in Sydney since 1972. Many of the group's veteran members hated ST:TMP, and it seemed like only my fellow "newbies" appreciated it. Going back through old issues of the club newsletter, it seemed like many people hated TAS in its day, too.

Over the next few decades, each new ST movie that was being prepared, filmed, released and reviewed had its detractors. Sometimes they'd make their point known by leaving the club, telling us we were all idiots for still liking ST. You'd think the club losing older members would be all bad news, but I saw the membership grow from 200 to over 1000 members at the height of TNG's popularity. Each new spin-off series created a flurry of detractors.

People do tend to fear change, even ST fans, sadly, despite one of the show's messages being to accept infinite diversity in infinite combinations (IDIC). Star Trek reinventing itself, like a modern mythology, is fine by me, and was even fine by Gene Roddenberry in some of his interviews where he talked about ST enduring beyond the lifespans of its original cast.

Too easy -- it's still pinned at the top of the forum. ;) The current tally shows 82.53% of those voting rated it at least "above average" while 17.46% voted it "average" or below.

Even allowing for some downward adjustment in personal ratings after repeated viewings and distance from the initial reaction, the numbers among TrekBBS members seem pretty favorable.

We went through this crap with TNG. The TOSsers who swore that it would fail sure told us!

No kidding, I had discussions with people like that. "TNG was a failure, it failed, TOS is the king, there can be only one, waaahblaaahwaaah."

Well almost $400 million in BO and 8+ million discs later they are still in the small minority.

RAMA

Personally I believe "good" Trek is overrated. TWOK, FC, XI etc. It seems like the fans act as if "good" Trek only comes around once in a lifetime.

All right. If you really want to go over the top one more time, I'll be your huckleberry!

Chris Pine is no Kirk because as an actor he doesn't have an ounce of the charisma Shatner had in his heyday. His HEYDAY, folks. Pine is a pretty boy plastic Hollywood confection of an actor who--to give the devil his due, does in fact have a few good moments in the movie. He's just no Kirk.

Star Trek wasn't a "dead property" as the constantly churning machinery of licensed goodies showed little to no sign of winding down any time soon. The last folks who had control of developing the franchise made some mistakes and mismanaged the franchise, but at it's core, any decent creative team could've revived it with a well written new property. The very words "Star Trek" will pull in an audience worth advertiser's money.

The Abomination recasts and reboots something that is considerably more than "just a tv show" for some of us. If you don't know what FIAWOL means, I'm not going to waste my time explaining it to you, but it's still the way some of us choose to live.

The JJprise is an ugly, clunky, bloated Abomination. YMMV

The movie had more than just "plot holes"--most of the core premises of it were somewhere between pandering and assinine. That didn't bother a lot of folks. It did bother some others.

I actually kind of like Nero.

So, question my disapproval all you like and jump on board a big ol' bandwagon of 09-love, if that's what you want. You are most assuredly not alone and will find many, many folks willing to validate your feelings.
Doesn't change how I feel about the movie.
JJTrek is an...wait for it....ABOMINATION!
g'night.

I grew up with Trek because my parents were rabid fans. But I guess compared to many of you, I'm still "new". I personally loved the movie and am glad there's finally a strong Trek franchise in the world.

Heya! Welcome aboard!
Well, y'know what they said in the advertisements, "This isn't your father's Star Trek." or such.

Seriously, I don't have any problems with other people liking the Abo...new movie. That's a matter of personal tastes and expectations. Heck, I own the damn thing on dvd and have made a concerted effort to adapt to it as much as I can and to try to find things in it that I can embrace, or at least live with--with a minimum of teeth gnashing.
(I even did a whole thread about what I liked about the film. Wasn't easy, let me tell you.)

In the final analysis, what is important is if YOU had fun watching it and whether or not you want to watch it again.
The opinions of a creaky old curmudgeon are irrelevant.

Heh.
My money says that The Oracle doesn't like JJTrek either, but you can never tell with those pesky Fabrini...

OP: I liked the movie, but you don't make a good point of praising the the new by knocking the old. There'd be no homage if TOS was crap, as it ain't.
