Trek 09 disapproval questioned.

I don't see what's the point on all the hatred towards JJTrek. If you don't like it, oh well, there's 5, 6 if including the Animated, series for one to whore about, plus 10 others movies, not to mention an entire collection of novels of the expanded universe, games and comics. The movie brought new fans to the franchise (granted mostly are interest in how kawaiidesu Spock is) and literally revived it, people should be glad that movie was even out, fresh blood, new perspectives, not the same old story everyone is tired of debating.

PROTIP - I couldn't careless for JJTRek, but I don't go around lololololloo it sucks u suck lol to every JJTrek fan.

First off is "Chris Pine is no Kirk". And I ask why? Is...it...because...he...can...put..a sentence...together without....Pausing on...every word. Pine did a great job, he was believable and I really hope people caught his little shatner-esque swagger at the end of the film. This goes for the rest of the cast, except Yelchin, he does as bad a russian accent as Koenig.
Epic facepalm.

Chris Pine is no Kirk because as an actor he doesn't have an ounce of the charisma Shatner had in his heyday. His HEYDAY, folks. Pine is a pretty boy plastic Hollywood confection of an actor who--to give the devil his due, does in fact have a few good moments in the movie. He's just no Kirk.

I'd be surprised if Pine one day could just sit down and recite some politician's speech and give one hell of a good performance. I don't think so. Everyone who says Shatner is a bad actor is out of his mind.

Original Kirk's way to speak. Every. Word. Like. It. Was. Its. Own. Sentence. was part of the Kirk character. Shatner doesn't speak that way in real life, his characters Denny Crane and T.J. Hooker usually didn't speak like that either.

He he, I should have known; thanks! :D
Don't worry -- maybe M'Sharak can find that poll thread where 78% of forum denizens said they liked or adored the movie.
Too easy -- it's still pinned at the top of the forum. ;) The current tally shows 82.53% of those voting rated it at least "above average" while 17.46% voted it "average" or below.

Even allowing for some downward adjustment in personal ratings after repeated viewings and distance from the initial reaction, the numbers among TrekBBS members seem pretty favorable.

I guess I just didn't like the movie because all the character we were supposed to care about were nothing but a**holes.

I like movies with good stories, likeable characters and sensible pacing. Star Trek XI had none of those things.

FIJAGH.

Pine, like most of the actors in Abrams's movie, is easily as good as his precursor. He is less mannered than Shatner, and whether he'll turn out to be as durable is yet unknown - longevity, however, has no necessary coorelation with how well an actor is regarded over time or what their ultimate contribution is. Vivian Leigh made less than twenty films and two of them are renowned classics largely because of her performances; Kelly Preston has already made three times as many. ;)

I like movies with good stories, likeable characters and sensible pacing. Star Trek XI had all of those things.

All over this board I see the bitter hatred poured forth towards Trek 09. I just dont get it, this whole "how dare you" and "you raped my childhood" sentiments just don't make sense. This isn't trying to replace the series' that came before it, instead it is a new chapter in the mythos.

Sci-fi fans get so weird about their shows. I've been a Trekkie for twenty years. The original series is my favorite, closely followed by the middle years of TNG. DS9 flew in the face of a lot of what those shows stood for but that doesn't mean I have to hate DS9. A new set of creators took over from the Roddenberry set and they needed some room to put their own stamp on Star Trek. Maybe I do love what came before DS9 just a little bit more but I also recognize that doing the same old thing over and over gets boring after awhile. DS9 allowed Star Trek to change and grow. Maybe I don't think the result was quite as good as the old days but it was infinitely better than if they had just tried to recycle those old ideas for seven years.

I don't know why fans of the original Star Trek can't look at the new film that way. Just 'cause I like the way Shatner played Kirk in 1966 doesn't mean I can't also like the way Pine plays Kirk today. Yeah, it's different. Big deal. Are there a few moments in Pine's performance that don't ring true to me? Yes. There are moments in Shatner's performance that don't ring true to me either but the difference is I'm so used to those moments that I kind of love them as much as the parts that are actually good. Come on, nobody really thinks Shatner should have won the Oscar for the way he shouted "Khaaaaan!" but we all love that scene.

To be a Classic Trek fan, you can't just turn a blind eye to painfully bad moments like that. You have to LOVE the bad stuff just as much as the good. You love all those moments when it's thought-provoking, profound, when it sheds light on what it means to be human... and you also love the styrofoam boulders, the fake-looking aliens, the bad accents, the ham acting (and let's face it, Shatner isn't the only offender in that department), the fight scenes with obvious stunt doubles, the plot holes, the unintentionally hilarious moments. Who doesn't love the "Risk is our business" speech? Who doesn't love "Brain and brain, what is brain"? Who doesn't love, "Spock, we reach"? Or Spock mindmelding with the Horta ("Pain!")? Or, "I am Kirok!"? And if you're more of a TNG fan, I can come up with a list for you too. I love watching Borg-Picard menace the Federation in "The Best of Both Worlds," but I'm equally entertained when Commander Shelby says, "Data was available, I took him, we came" -- and I don't think I'm the only one who loves that moment.

I think there's way more good than bad in the new Star Trek movie but it will never pass muster with the Trekkies who refuse to love its faults the way they love the faults in their favorite episodes. With that kind of double standard, nothing could compare favorably. Most non-Trekkies who come in without our built-in love for the characters loved the film, which suggests to me that most Trekkies would love it too if they gave it a fair shot. Why can't we do that? Beats me. It's not like we're married to Shatner and company. We can dilly-dally with their younger, hotter doppelgangers and then go back without needing to feel guilty. Just like we can like DS9 or Doctor Who or Grey's Anatomy or Project Runway without "betraying" Star Trek.

If you (no one person, I'm not calling anyone out) disapprove, fine. No one's going to convince you you're wrong. Some of your finer points criticizing the movie may even be well-taken. But still in the broadest sense of Star Trek, if this were an election, you lost. Big time. "Approve" won. Landslide. To you, that may not make sense. And it may not make you feel your disapproval is any less valid. But realize you're in a very small minority, nonetheless. And the election is over. See you next movie.

I've been a Star Trek fan for getting on 40 years and I loved the new film!

I will admit to having been concerned when I heard the initial reports about it taking place at Starfleet Academy with all of the crew but I was very, very pleased with the outcome.

The movie brought new fans to the franchise (granted mostly are interest in how kawaiidesu Spock is)

As they should be. As MANY were during TOS.

I actually meant so say "granted mostly are ONLY interested..." I don't know about most people, but I don't watch a whole series or anything just because there's "attractive" people on it. ST is much more than a bunch of pretty faces. BUT, like I said, I don't care, I still have my series to enjoy and a whole bunch of fans to enjoy with me. :)

Star Trek wasn't a "dead property" as the constantly churning machinery of licensed goodies showed little to no sign of winding down any time soon.

That must be why Activision and Art Asylum sued Paramount for "allowing the Star Trek property to become worthless".

Owners of deceased franchises across the entertainment spectrum watched that case with great interest.

And lets not forget Sisko spoke the same way, especially in the first couple seasons!

There are a few reasons why Star Trek was so popular.

One: They went with a retro/futuristic combo design of the original series. Everyone associates Trek even now as the red, blue, and gold uniforms. We even get a Red Shirt Death Scene!

Two: Zachary Quinto. Hot off the wildely popular show Heroes, JJ Was brilliant in casting him as a lead character as Spock. It also helps that he resembles a young Nimoy a little. Casting him brought in a horde of his fanbase from Heroes.

Three: Making Star Trek seem like a movie, and not an episode from a TV series. That's the problem I had with the last 4 TNG movies. Each one could've been Season enders for seasons 8, 9, 10 & 11. Nemesis came close to a movie quality feel, it's too bad they didn't have one more re-write, and push it to Spring 2003!

Now I loved BermTrek as much as any other fan, how did he get away with creating new series, movies, theme park attractions, etc. without as much fan backlash (albiet minor) as JJ did?
