Exactly. People knew what they were getting into. I don't want to say I told you so, but I'm glad I didn't choose sides; of course, had I chosen sides, I would have still chosen Blu-Ray, but that's irrelevant.

Why? HD-DVD is a dead format. If you don't already have discs that use it, why bother getting a player that does? You're not seriously saying you're going to BUY discs for a format you know is dead, are you?
I am damn sure getting rid of my HD-DVD player as soon as certain films, such as Apollo 13 and Transformers, come out in Blu-Ray.
Not to mention the fact that combo players will (are?) likely a couple hundred dollars more expensive than a stand alone Blu-Ray player.
Anyone who did any research knew Blu was going to win the war by the Spring of 07.
Hd-DVD got a few months of life support by buying Paramount/Dreamworks. Had things developed naturally the war would've been over before xmas.

Maybe its a pipe dream, butttt...wouldn't it be great if the Blu-Ray version, when they recode it, offered up two versions? One would be the wholly redone eps we've been seeing piecemeal in syndie. The second would be a more restrained remastering : Just strings, obvious doubles, and like that removed, with maybe cartoony phasers retraced just a bit. As Spock would be like to say :"Just because one can do something, it does not always follow that one should."
Two problems with that: 1) I have not heard good things about either of the combo players on the market (the LG or the Samsung). 2) If I can get all my movies on Blu-Ray, which I eventually will, then why bother supporting any other format? Sony makes a great Blu-Ray player, and someday that'll be all I'll need.

I just bought a 1080p player at Best Buy for $119.00. This player also upconverts regular DVDs to great quality. I also got 2 free movies in the box, 2 in the store and a mail in rebate for 5 free movies. These movies were retailing at $29 each..and still are for blu-ray...not to mention the cheapest blu-ray player is still $399. That's just too much money. It won't be long before the basic HD players will be available for $50. That's when I'll pick up a back-up.
Also, with Toshiba pulling the plug, retail outlets and online stores are blowing out their HD inventory left and right. Trek season 1 can now be had for as little as $79 if you shop around. Hollywood Video is selling off HD movies 2 for $20. Amazon and Deep Discount is selling HD titles for 50-65% off. Blu-ray won, and as an HD owner, I couldn't be happier! But it's getting crazy...I'm almost to the point where I can't afford to save any more money!!

You won't be able to sell your existing player and movies for enough to re-buy them on blu-ray so you might just look at picking up a cheap player (many can be had for under $99 now) for a future HD back-up and just keep what you have. Then you can continue to enjoy it with the peace of mind of knowing you won't have to buy all the movies again at the higher Blu-ray cost when you pick up a blu-ray down the road.
