I wouldn't have minded Voyager playing a stronger diplomatic role. Playing escort or traveling with ships going in their direction or even pairing with ships crazy enough to join their seemingly impossible journey.
I thought what
Voyager really needed was to spend some time around a multi-species liberal-democratic government, something that shared the Federation's core values, or at least enough of them that people could plausibly feel like they were at home. There's a good meaty choice to be made about whether going home is a matter of going to a particular patch of space and time, or whether it's finding people who value the things you do and accept you for who you are, and only
Voyager could really have done it.
Oh I love this, and then it would have caused a enormous division amongst the crew. I think gnerally speaking the Maquis crew members might have been more flexible to the idea of staying in the delta seeing as a trial awaits them most of them back in the Alpha quadrant and it was the intentions of the Maqui to begin with to start their own nation independent from the Federation. Then you have the fact that Voyager thought it was going to take them about 70 years to get back home, and that's taking the risk of traversing Borg space. But then maybe the ideals of this nation wouldn't be exactly the same like perhaps genetic engineering is legal, or they still hold money in high regard so they're kind of like a cross between the Federation and the Ferengi alliance though, not as greedy as the former.
Anyways here's a quick list of what i would have loved to have seen.
1. Explanations on how the crew gets their quarters cleaned, do they have some sort of sonic sweep that clears all the dust away like a sonic shower, little exocomp like maid drones, or is it done by the none officer personnel?
2. A greater use of space suits, my suspension from reality is jarred a little at the thought of how many planetoids and asteroids in the trekverse are M class.
3. An away team having to deal with drastically different gravity.
4. More episodes with Q....and about the Continuum.
5.Citation Ops!!!!!!!
6. More about the Deltans, and the Andorians, Tellarites post the TOS era, not to mention the Orions.
Edit: .....and I forgot the most controversial ones of all.
7. I wanted to see humans practicing a real Earth religion Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Shinto, Wicca which ever. It would have taken some balls on the writers part, and realistically speaking as long as humans are humans yep there's going to be spirituality.
8. You remember those dudes in the background with skirts? Why not give one of them a speaking role at one point. Are they gay, do they identify as transgender, or has it just become socially acceptable for men to wear skirts? Maybe Riker wears a uniform with a skirt from time to time, perhaps on away missions where it's hot.
