Spoilers The Strange New Worlds Starship Thread™

use an actual original design when there's plenty available that would have filled that niche perfectly.
Being that they were trying to tie the episode with The Day the Earth Stood Still, they were definitely trying to make the Archer a "flying saucer." I mean, it's literally just that, but with a nacelle attached because it's still Star Trek. There's only so much you can do if you still want to keep retro sci-fi look.

I think it's kinda perfect in that they were able to pull off the look while still giving us a "classic" design.

Yeah I'm not quite sure - never read the book myself. You can definitely see the hard corners in the shading along the edge of the primary hull (not going to call it a "saucer" in this context! :p) but I'm not at all sure if it was supposed to be 6 sides or 8. For the record, I think 6 sides would look an order of magnitude more goofy than 8 does.

Someone actually once took a stab at making some orthos for that design. A noble effort…. The very un-Starfleet sounding USS Star Empire!

Yeah, there's a reason for it sounding a little un-Starfleet... let's just say it has certain thematic similarities to the similarly un-Starfleet-y USS Vengeance in Star Trek Into Darkness and leave it at that. It even has its own badmiral...

I believe that Vallejo’s intent was to have the saucer be a hexagon, not an octagon, unless it was described in the book to be octagonal.

Hexagonal according to the book too.

but I'm not at all sure if it was supposed to be 6 sides or 8. For the record, I think 6 sides would look an order of magnitude more goofy than 8 does.

I agree.

Yeah, all the Federation-class ships were named after forms of government. Federation, Star League, Compactat, Affiliation, Organization, Dominion, Consortium, Entente (the canon one!)...
Star League. A BattleTech reference?

Guess which one out of those Sisko wouldn't like.

I flattened those a tad (scroll down)

As it was on the novel cover—it looked a tad comical…by making it leaner—it has that sinister quality Bismarck had.
