The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

I liked Jonas as well.

And was a bit disappointed that he essentially got the Pulaski treatment after this season. Yeah, yeah, he comes back in one episode later on.

I disagree.

Pulaski didn't die a pointless off screen death. Sure they didn't show Jonas dying but the Ori wiped out his planet so... really bad. I wish they went through with the plan of having him go to Atlantis.[/spoilers]

Jonas making it to Atlantis, even just to guest star in an episode and show that he'd survived (presumably with some SG-1 crossover), could have been fun to see.

Agreed.

He appeared in 3 more episodes, not 1.

"FALLEN", "HOMECOMING", and "FALLOUT".

One negative I think you will find is this is the season where you start to see less of Jack. The actor wanted to work just part time on the show and even though it's way more noticeable in the next couple of years it kind of starts with this season.

But the plan was for SG-1 to end with season 6, Lost City then Atlantis. Then have Jonas be a main character for Atlantis. I like that idea.

SGU definitely had commercial break pauses inserted in the show. I remember one time for some reason the Space channel in Canada interrupted the show in the middle of scenes for commercial breaks, then when the show came back, about a minute or so in came the proper moment for the commercial, and we'd get the fade to black for a few seconds and then continue on.
One of the channels here in the US, TNG, used to do that with their acquired syndicated shows, like Angel, Supernatural, Bones, and Castle. They'd always do their own commercial breaks instead of the preset ones, so it would cut to a commercial in the middle of a scene, and then a couple minutes later we'd get the fade out for the original commercial break, and it would just keep going.
Also, I've been thinking about this for a while but I think I'm going to not start Atlantis until I finish SG-1. This way I can not feel like I'm holding off on end of the season cliffhangers and it will just be easier to get through with Amazon's user interface. Also, I do plan to see Lost City a second time prior to getting into Rising, as I think both those episodes will have to tie together somehow. I am still looking forward to Atlantis but I'm at that position where finishing up SG-1 first might be the best way to go.
I've been doing a Star Trek rewatch, starting with DS9 and Voyager, and the way I've been handling cliffhangers, is I just watch both halves of the two parter or even the whole closing/opening arc, and then just stop at the end of the arc and switch to the other show. If it's a show where the whole season is one continuing arc, and one season's arc flows into the next, then I'll usually just stop at the end of the season. I think the majority of both SG-1 and SGA, are standalone enough that it would probably work with them.

Oh god no. That episode is the changing point of the show from Stargate as it started to full blown over the top silliness of the later seasons.

I just said that it is one of my favorites. But that is subjective of course.

I know the decision to turn replicators into humanoids is controversial. But it effectively uses time dilation in a clever way. I also like the resolution with Fifth. The episode reminds of the TNG episode with Hugh. Plus the episode sets up some big concepts that pay off later in the series.

I should probably include the episode "Cure" in my list because it has a big impact on the series as a whole.

I disagree.

The Ori conquered his planet, but they didn't wipe it out. It was featured in the SGU episode with McKay and Woolsey in it.

Frozen

This one was a little on the slow side for me. They find a woman in the Antarctic who might have connections with the Ancients and is also able to cure a virus that is spreading amongst the team. It was nice to see the relationship build between Jonas and the woman and the scene at the end where the only way to save O'Neill is to put a Tok'ra symbiote in him was good. Other than that, this episode was just there.

She is an Ancient.

Nightwalker & Abyss

It's a light night for Stargate viewing, but I got three in today, including these two. Nightwalker was a very different episode of the show, but I still really enjoyed it. This one had Sam, Teal'c, and Jonas investigating a small town after a Doctor from the research lab that Adrian Conrad (Desperate Measures) worked at. Turns out the townspeople were Goa'ulds, but they were cloned symbiotes so the symbiote only had power to control the host at night. This would have been a solid X-Files episode, but it still had that Stargate feel that made it fun. I also liked Jonas eating as much as he could and the revelation at the end with Sam taking the antidote and then her discussion with Jonas about hitting him just to keep the act going.

Abyss was a fantastic episode. It seems like a lot of the shows in various franchises have that psychological torture episode. Farscape had The Hidden Memory (John in the Aurora Chair), Star Trek had Chain of Command and Die is Cast, amongst others, Babylon 5 had that amazing episode where Sharidan was being psychologically tortured (I forgot the name, but it was in season 4) and this one had Jack O'Neill being psychologically tortured by System Lord Ba'al. Every single scene with Jack was fantastic, from the camera angle on the cell, to Daniel even appearing, to the revelation that Jack was protecting Kanan's secret about the Slave Woman. I'm not sure if it's a top episode of the series for me yet, but it's pretty close up there. It is telling me one thing about this season though. Stargate is not missing a step with Shanks' departure. Granted, he was back in this episode, but I can't really say I miss him that much. The way they've written this season so far is really well done. I hope it keeps going but in the first 6 episodes, I'm pleasantly surprised. The only episode I haven't liked so far was Frozen, but there were redeeming qualities in that one, at least with Jack's decision.
