The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

@tomalak301 Looks like you have finally arrived to the big last two episodes of season 5, Meridan + Revelations. Enjoy!

I am looking forward to them. I can't believe I'm pretty much at Season 6 now. When @bigdaddy said I had started this 3 weeks ago, it honestly has felt longer. I guess that's what Shelter-in-place can do, make days feel like weeks and weeks feel like months. Everything is just kinda flowing together though.

Also, I've been thinking about this for a while but I think I'm going to not start Atlantis until I finish SG-1. This way I can not feel like I'm holding off on end of the season cliffhangers and it will just be easier to get through with Amazon's user interface. Also, I do plan to see Lost City a second time prior to getting into Rising, as I think both those episodes will have to tie together somehow. I am still looking forward to Atlantis but I'm at that position where finishing up SG-1 first might be the best way to go.

I might caution you though. SG1's Season 10 has an amazing crossover episode called "The Pegasus Project" where SG1 gets to visit Atlantis for the first time. The episode will spoil the reveal of Atlantis if you have not watched any episodes of Atlantis yet.

I might suggest watching the Atlantis premiere "Rising" immediately following the SG1 season 7 finale "The Lost City Part 1&2" since Rising is a direct sequel to The Lost City and will provide an additionally satisfying conclusion to the story arc in The Lost City.

I might do that and then see Rising again as part of the overall series. I know you guys have said there is that one main crossover but it's mainly from the POV of SG-1, not really for Atlantis.

Yes but SG1 visits Atlantis so you will see Atlantis, meet the Atlantis main cast and visit some key locations in Atlantis.

Nope, nope, nope, the SG-1 Season 8 premiere takes place first. It goes "Lost City," "New Order," and then "Rising." (which I do recommend, if only so you'll be sure if you want to alternate or not). For one thing...

"New Order" is when we're introduced to regular Dr. Weir; she was played by a different actress in "Lost City."

And Atlantis has a visit from SG1 members eventually.

There are also a number of secondary and tertiary characters and, um, objects that ping-pong between the two shows fairly frequently. Though full-blown "crossovers" were rare (and Atlantis visits the SGC way more than SG-1 ever got to Atlantis), there was a good amount of interaction between the two shows.

Fail Safe

This felt like Stargate doing Armageddon. I think the important thing about this episode was there are still Tok'ra around and the Asgard are kinda useless. They have their treaty that doesn't allow them to get involved, yet I can understand why Jack is pissed off at them. You'd think after saving them from the replicators the Asgard could "throw a bone" to earth. I wonder if they will ever find out the Asteroid was artificially created by the Goa'uld to get around the treaty. It's a shame this episode wasn't more specific on that point though.
One of the funniest lines said by O’Neil is said in that episode.
“Carter, I can see my house from here.”

Teal'c is secondary?

Teal'c is secondary?
I was thinking about General Landry, Major Lorne, Dr. Lee, Major Marks, the Apollo, and so on. Actually, looking it up, Teal'c did some of the least ping-ponging, only cameoing in Carter's goodbye scene when she went to Atlantis, and his big team-up episode with Ronin.

For the sake of not making myself confused, I'm following what Gateworld said and take my chances:

If you’d rather not alternate between the two series, watch SG-1‘s eighth season first. You can even finish all 10 seasons before starting Atlantis, though there will be the occasional reference to the other show — and one big crossover episode, Season Ten’s “The Pegasus Project.”

I will however see the Season 8 premiere, then Rising, and then come back to Season 8. After I finish SG-1 I'll probably see Rising again.

It isn’t that hard to alternate. That’s what people did back then.
There’s also the ZPM story arc.

Ok, this might make me sound really lazy but I'm going to say it anyway. People back then when this series was on didn't have streaming services, and usually SG-1 and Atlantis aired back to back so all they had to do was keep their butts on the couch. ;)

I don’t think it was on back to back. Sky in the UK used to get the world premiere of Stargate but not Atlantis. You had to wait longer for it.

  • Stargate Movie.
  • Sg-1 until Atlantis.
  • Start alternating episodes of Sg1 and Atlantis until S10 sg1.
  • When s10 started airing, Atlantis Ep were new first so you watch Atlantis S3 E1, then SG1 S10 E1, until end of sg1.
  • Ark of truth, then Season 4 Atlantis.
  • Continuum.
  • S5 Atlantis.
That’s what Google indicates.

Meridian

I had heard way back in the day (probably while I was watching Farscape since I think it was still on in 2002) that there was a falling out and Michael Shanks was leaving SG-1. I vaguely remember it being a pretty big news story but I can now say I understand the magnitude of that decision. I expected Daniel Jackson to leave, but I thought that would be happening in the finale, not the penultimate episode of the season. This was a strange episode for him to go on. He has a lethal dose of radiation on a mission and instead of dying, they close the Maternal Instinct side to his story with Oma Desula and him basically becoming the Sisko (Or Wesley Crusher) of Stargate. They didn't kill him off, but they pretty much made him ascend. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this story point to write him out. I guess what we know before it makes sense and it does leave it open for him to come back (And yeah I did kind of spoil myself on the fact that he is coming back but I'm not sure how), but this was just an interesting way to go. I will say of all the goodbyes, I really enjoyed the one with him and Jack. They both have been arguing a lot more this season than before, so having Jack (reluctantly) admit that he admired Daniel was nice.

Yeah, my understanding is that Shanks did not want to get type cast and wanted to stretch as an actor so he demanded to be written out of the show. But then later, he regretted that decision and asked to come back. I will say that his return becomes a pretty big part of the show's story arcs in future seasons. So it is pretty significant.

Shanks didn't have a true falling out, his ego got ahead of him and thought he could do better. But he still voices what's his name in season 6.

Also watch SG-1, "Lost City" - "New Order" - "Rising". Then I'd say watch SG-1 until the end of season 8. Then watch Atlantis season 1-2-3, then finish SG-1, then finish Atlantis. It's the easiest way to do things that the crossovers make sense from what I remember.

It's only week 3-4 of lockdown in normal time. In lockdown time it's been 57 weeks.
