The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

Meridian

I had heard way back in the day (probably while I was watching Farscape since I think it was still on in 2002) that there was a falling out and Michael Shanks was leaving SG-1. I vaguely remember it being a pretty big news story but I can now say I understand the magnitude of that decision. I expected Daniel Jackson to leave, but I thought that would be happening in the finale, not the penultimate episode of the season. This was a strange episode for him to go on. He has a lethal dose of radiation on a mission and instead of dying, they close the Maternal Instinct side to his story with Oma Desula and him basically becoming the Sisko (Or Wesley Crusher) of Stargate. They didn't kill him off, but they pretty much made him ascend. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this story point to write him out. I guess what we know before it makes sense and it does leave it open for him to come back (And yeah I did kind of spoil myself on the fact that he is coming back but I'm not sure how), but this was just an interesting way to go. I will say of all the goodbyes, I really enjoyed the one with him and Jack. They both have been arguing a lot more this season than before, so having Jack (reluctantly) admit that he admired Daniel was nice.
What’s weird was when that episode aired in the UK, I looked up online about it to see if it was permanent and found nothing about it. I didn’t realise until later was that it was because they aired the episode in the UK two months before the US which is why there was nothing about it. Luckily forum sites were in their infancy back then or they would have spoiled that episode to many people outside the UK.

Speaking of actor changes, there was a period where Atlantis and SG-1 were airing in Canada months, and at times, about a year ahead of the US airings. In my experience, the Canadian (and illegally downloading) Stargate fans were remarkably bad about unmarked spoilers. Which meant...

I found out Dr. Beckett was coming back to life before I even saw the episode where he was killed off.

Yeah, Canada has the world premiere for Atlantis. I remember Sky boosting they had the world premieres and I had to email them to correct them. :)

Revelations (Season 5 Finale)

As an episode, it was enjoyable. As a season finale, it was just "there". I think the best parts of this episode was the beginning where we get a sense of the loss that Daniel left behind. In fact, I thought Major Carter was the best part here, especially telling Teal'c not to give her the "way of the warrior crap". I also liked General Hammond dropping his guard a little bit to talk about his friend who was shot down in Vietnam.

As for the main plot of this episode, we learn that the Asgard are clones and they are dying, Thor was captured by Osiris and was rescued, but is in a coma and might not make it, and we finally got a little glimpse of Anubis. The Anubis reveal was kinda lame in that for being a season finale, I thought it would have been bigger. We basically see him in a hood and what we can see under that hood is a distortion. Considering how he was set up and how they didn't reveal him in the two parter earlier in this season, I would have liked to get more than just a distorted guy in a hood.

I don't really have much else for this episode. It was good, but it is probably ranked at the bottom in terms of finales with maybe Season 2 being worse because it was a cilp show. If I were to rank the Season finales so far, it would probably be something like this:

Season 4
Season 1
Season 3
Season 5
Season 2

As for season 5 as a whole, this was a lot better than Season 4. Heck, I might even call it my favorite season. I would say it was pretty consistant throughout, addressing various plot arcs, closing those arcs while opening new ones, and not dragging their arcs like some shows tend to do in the modern era. One example of that was the NID arc and Simmons. I wasn't really a fan of that arc, but in looking back, I didn't mind it because it was only a few episodes, culminating in the great episode, 48 hours. We got some closure for Daniel, which didn't feel rushed to me, and Apophis is dead and now Anubis is basically the replacement. I hope in Season 6 we might see the Tollan again, but even if we didn't, the show did a great job answering questions like what is the Status of the Tollan and the Tok'Ra after their big episodes where they suffered great losses. Basically, in conclusion, I felt Season 5 did the best in terms of pacing the story, giving us a mixture of episodic and arc, and there was a lot to unpack. I had a great time watching it.

At the half way point of the series, if I were to rank the seasons:

Season 5
Season 2
Season 1
Season 3
Season 4

As for my favorite episodes in Season 5:

Threshold - Great story for Teal'c and really rounded out his character

2001 - I couldn't ask for a better follow up to one of my favorite season 4 episodes.

Summit//Last Stand - In hindsight, I think these two episodes should have been the season finale, with Anubis revealing himself at the end of the first part.

Wormhole X-Treme - This episode was basically celebrating 100 episodes of SG-1, and I couldn't have asked for a better celebration

Between Two Fires - For being episode 9 of the season, it was a huge changing point for the series. This also could have been a season finale.

Season 6 will reveal more about Anubis. ;)

I remember the first time I watched this episode, I was really shocked at the cold open. We expect the Asgard ships to be more powerful so suddenly seeing them unable to damage the Goauld ships, with Osiris saying "the days of bowing to the Asgard are finally over" really shocked me the first time I saw the episode.

I think you mean season 2? You have not seen the season 6 finale yet. ;)

Just wait till you get to 200. :)

I know about 200. I haven't seen it, but I know there is a good Farscape parody in there.

@Romulan_spy

Yeah that was a great cold open. Heck, I would say the first 15 minutes of this episode was the best part. I just wish as a whole it would have been a little bigger.

And I edited my original post. Yeah the Season 2 finale was the worst.

I remember finding the episode a bit of a let down as far as being a season finale as well. Yes, it ups the stakes, but even knowing there's a Goa'uld who can outmatch the Asgard somehow doesn't feel as dire as Apophis's ships coming for Earth at the end of S1.

And I edited my original post. Yeah the Season 2 finale was the worst.

We don't talk about the season 2 finale. So you were correct to no include it on the list. In the 15 years of Stargate finales there is nothing worst than the season 2 finale. Hell it's not even a good two parter.

Redemption

New season, New Network, New Cast Member, this episode pretty much served as a bit of a series premiere. Yes I know it's the start of Season 6, but it really did feel like if you haven't watched the series before, this would have been a decent place to start. Anubis shows his power by launching a computer program to impact that gate networks, we see Teal'c's family again, especially Ryac, and there is a doomsday scenerio in which Jack saves the planet again. I liked this two parter, and I actually found McKay a little bit more tolerable. I still think he's a jerk, but it wasn't as overt this time as it was in his introduction. I also liked how there was an A and B plot that worked to achieve the same goal.

As for Jonas, I think I like him. Maybe he's trying too hard to be Daniel Jackson, but he blames himself for Daniel's death and wants to prove to the team and to himself that he can make a difference. That's a nice starting point and while I will miss Daniel, I'm keeping an open mind on what Jonas will do this season.

Descent

So Thor may not be dead. His Mind was just on Anubis's mothership and he could be cloned into another Asgard. Way to take elements from the Season 5 finale and tell a gripping and well done story. Also, I'm liking Jonas more with each episode. In the beginning he was bored, and in the end he saved the day and got to fly in a Goa'uld death glider. Also, everything Jack says is still gold, like saying next time they can keep the Goa'uld mothership.

This might be a better start than Season 5, but it's still early.

I like season 6 and Jonas. I like it a lot more than I like season 7 which I think is an unpopular opinion. But season 6 is really good, some great episodes, some amazing new characters, new elements of history, and the finale... Such a good season. One of my favorites in all of Stargate.

I like your reviews, only now I miss SG1 even more!
I wish I had so much time to watch a tv show.

I have been thoroughly enjoying the reviews.

I've been remembering so many fond things sbout SG-1.

I haven't said much in the earlier pages because I had a lot of work lately, but it's amazing how pages happen in sych a short time.

Good review. Yes, Redemption does in many ways feel like a series premiere, especially the beginning that slowly introduces us to what is happening with the new characters and with the Russians.

I love the scenes with Ryac and Tealc, especially that scene at the base of the stargate where Tealc says to his son "you never had to doubt my trust, my son, because you never lost it." Great line. Great delivery.

This season does have some pretty key episodes in terms of advancing the overall story arc in big ways, and expanding the world-building of this universe.

I liked Jonas as well.

And was a bit disappointed that he essentially got the Pulaski treatment after this season. Yeah, yeah, he comes back in one episode later on.
