Yeah, and therein lies the difference between idealism and the kind of soporific fantasizing that Roddenberry indulged in and that too many trekkies embrace.
Their cultural references so far, seem to stop at the year 2000ish. I really think that humanity went digital at some point, everything was wiped by accident or misadventure, and the year 2000ish was the last good backup that was made of the people of Earth, which is why no one talks about the last 500 years, since Seinfeld was cancelled.

Because how dare a sci-fi show have characters with some actual humanity too them. It's so much better when they have sticks up their asses talking down to aliens about the superiority of the human condition. It isn't saying rape isn't a big deal. The ones involved were under the influence of alien pheromones, and therefore not responsible for their actions. Of course, even if it were saying rape isn't a big deal, would that surprise you in a Seth MacFarlane show? One of the more popular Family Guy supporting characters (who MacFarlane does the voice of) is a serial rapist.
To the extent that TNG was good storytelling, it was in spite of Roddenberry's nonsense about "evolved humans" - not because of it.
Woke up in a cold sweat, in the middle of the night last night screaming "THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF WHOCARES WERE IN THE ALIEN ZOO EPISODE!" (The pilot premiered in 2005.)
If they let him grow up, keep your eye on Cleveland Brown Jr. What about Lt Ilia from the Motionless Picture? "My oath of Celibacy is on record". The novel said that humans get too attached and go insane, but there could be more to it. There was a throw away line in the Dorulio episode before it got rapey just talking about the infidelity "it's bad manners to turn down sex in my culture." It's also chemically impossible to turn down sex during mating season, so that's maybe the point. If you're taught from infancy to always say yes to sex, you won't notice that you can't say no, and half the population (both genders) won't constantly be on trial for rape always.
For a while now network shows have been getting shorter and shorter, so it's nice to see one actually going in the opposite direction.
