Seriously? This is one of the coolest shots they did.http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=30189&position=1
This is probably the only bad shot of the 6 footer in existence. It just looks so much like a toy... *flashback to when I had an Enterprise D toy*
That's not really the issue, though. Yes, the model work of the TOS movies are still there on the masters, but they need to exist as seperate elements, not part of the master. It may be that they couldn't find the original element and had no choice but to reproduce the shot.Well the model work can still be seen in HD in the TOS Movies![]()
The entire sequence is a great one, but the shots at the beginning don't really work since you're seeing the Enterprise-D from probably the worst angle it's ever been filmed in before it moves into better looking angles.Seriously? Anyone know if they actually added the transition from the model to Picard standing behind the window in that shot?
I also love the enhanced color timing. The original shot looks awful in comparison:

Also, it looks like they were able to keep the Deneb IV matte painting rather than re-create it in CG (the clouds and surface features look identical):

I'm not so sure about that. I think they just faithfully recreated the layout. Either way the end result kicks ass!

This is definitely the same matte painting. Here's the same frame from the DVD:

The stars in the background are different and the glow of the atmosphere has been added, the rest is the original footage.
I really like this cleaned up shot and the fact that it will appear as Vulcan in several later episodes:

analog videotape and the standard definition camera on the telecine machine back in 1987.I just wonder why the original transfer from film to video was so incredibly blurry.

Planets were done in several different ways, Mike Okuda told me some weeks ago. This is one of the planets were a painting was created.
Transporter effects looks amazing. Really bright and defined. The season 1 transporter effects always looked pretty puny and faded.
The only thing that bugs me about that shot is there's no reflection of the beam on the floor of the transporter pad.
