Discussing letting go of life and accepting death as high-concept drama was rarely more interesting:

TOS: "Return To Tomorrow"

The episode is packed with nuances - the lengths to continue life, even without a body. Then getting to touch again. Then thinking of permanently keeping the body being temporarily given up. The mind put into the sphere. The list goes on.

The mental gymnastics used to get Henoch out of possessed-Spock was brilliant, not to mention Leonard Nimoy stealing the show when getting to be evil.

Nice resolution, though I wish I could find another scene of Spock/Henoch going mad and mentally Charlie X'ing everyone on the ship. Nimoy really goes all out in this episode and that alone is a great reason to rewatch it, but there are many reasons.

Yeah, the "Earth parallel development" is taken to such sledgehammer extremes, arguably more so than "Spock's Brain" had, but ignoring the parallels - the sci-fi element is genuinely horrific, and there's more under the hood for anyone who really wants to look.

Not to mention Morgan Woodward's acting is no less than phenomenal in this, but given his appearance as another character in "Dagger of the Mind", it's not surprising. He was incredibly good at acting.

"MANEUVERS" was going to be my next save... great, tense episode.

Speaking of tense, saving "MINEFIELD".

This was very, very well done. Tense from start to finish. Great Reed episode. And great first script from John Shiban, fresh off THE X-FILES. (I wish he stuck around for more than just season 2.)

And something my wife says about Anthony Montgomery... he's actually a good actor when it comes to physical acting. It's something she noticed a while back, and I have to agree with her, with this episode being an easy one to point to. His focus on the job, the sweat on his forehead as he's very carefully maneuvering around the minefield. I still think he was extremely weak otherwise (likely the weakest of all the series leads across the franchise), but when it came to physical/pantomiming stuff, he nails it.

Another Fontana gem,

TOS: "By Any Other Name"

carries the theme of "fish out of water" in terms of the Kelva aliens being from both another galaxy and having to take human form (just don't ask how regarding the latter). This allows our humies to focus on each one's unique weaknesses to reclaim the ship from. One of the Kelvins is into food. Another is into booze. The leader, Kirk's counterpart, go fig leaf, is into hawt possessive oinkydoink and the lady involved wants to experiment as well, so it's all neat and tidy. If only Jerry Springer was in the 23rd century as all the elements are there...

The means to incapacitate the crew is also no less brilliant on multiple levels. Turning them into groovy packing cubes is as TOS as it can look, inexpensively done, while allowing for some high concept horror via the description of what the person is transmogrified into. Plus, the continuity of the first two victims' cubes, regarding which one is held in each hand by Rojan, is perfect.

And, of course, Kirk being held responsible for the actions of his crew is mentioned and Trek rarely addressed that problem with TOS. Understandably because the captain should be stuck on the ship where all his little trained minions can go whizzing on every electric fence with total impunity, along with everything else, if they wanted. But this was the 1960s, not 1980s, so we had the action action action instead. Not that I'm complaining, this episode knows when to awe the audiences.

At the end of the day, Kirk and crew save the day and they still remain cordial, welcoming the Kelvans as friends. There's another sequel we likely won't get. 100 years later, did they make another attempt and got wiped out? Did they start a colony where things worked out smurfily if not otherwise? Oh well.

Even though it's not quite the immigration analogy some people take it as (since the Federation, or the US's equivalent, was welcoming the Skreeans with open arms), it's a pretty good story with a tragic end. I still maintain that his unwitting part in the other young man's death was what motivated Nog to rethink his life.

It's Star Trek's warped version of "I, Robot"! An episode that also starts out coarser than sandpaper, turns the tone halfway in and becomes a serious affair. With the usual Kirktrope of "computers bad, m'kay". Heck, he nags Norman into overloading (surprise, surprise). TBH, this is where the other 60s phrase "Make love, not war" could come in handy, but I'm not going there right now.

Roger C Carmel steals the show yet again.

It's not difficult to imagine the androids hauling everyone down to the planet.

Or the droids using each of our heroes' desires (especially the rambunctious Scotty the moment he hears they're happy to share their schematics, which seems to turn him on. Did Scotty create Bender from Futurama too? :D GAAAH, FANWANKY CROSSOVERS, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! )

The male ones just have a sadly non-translucent two-sizes-too-small set of sweatsuits... this episode deffo has all the eyecandy in the universe, just sayin'...) Gotta admit, Shatner's comedic delivery of "I am not programmed to respond in that area" is hysterically good

Naturally, Chekov gets the biggest joke - all but asking outright if the androids can be used as lifesize sex dolls. Sadly, the full scene clip was not findable, so the bit in the original teaser must suffice. pretty amazing that the punchline was included in that teaser. But I'm not complaining... too much...

Oh McCoy, you should know better, as Spock is astounded by the same gaping illogic that, lo and behold, is used by the end of the story, including by Spock in referring to logic as bad-smellin' flowers with chirping birds and things. Hmmm, I wonder if that was intentional in the story, or if the author of it got so carried up in writing this one that he'd forgotten, Stephen Kandel did have some fun as a TV show episode writer... But the whole story is so over-the-top and zany, that somehow it works. Especially in rewatches. At least when I'm in the mood, which is there - believe it or not. Up next, in the other series of game theads where we're allowed to really rip into episodes, you can bet where I'll go with this one. I love ambivalence all while hating it at the same time, imagine that in that laurel wreath... and, lastly, in character with the story, I reversed two of the captions out of sheer illogic. Now where's my limburger-flavored coffee flavoring at nigh on 05:00?

"The Devourer of All Things, Part I" is saved for bringing Wesley Crusher into Prodigy's story in a very appropriate and well-written way -- of course he would/could/should be involved in a story about altering the timeline, and his dialogue shows his unique perspective and priorities in Doctor Who-esque fashion. Even his animation style makes him look unique; I honestly wondered for a few minutes if I was actually looking at the live-action actor. The plot's tense and well-done, with just the right amounts of weirdness and internal consistency. And I award bonus points for Janeway's claiming static to evade Jellico's demand that she abort her efforts to save the kids -- she doesn't even bother making it sound realistic! :lol:
