I will save "The Changeling" from TOS for being an overall decent episode that also has some really weird and/or cringey moments buried within it. I'm especially fond of the Kirk/Spock exchange at the beginning where Spock announces their shields absorbed the energy equivalent to 90 photon torpedoes, but not 2 minutes later Kirk is shocked that anything could survive being hit with 1 photon torpedo.

Saving "SHADOWPLAY".

This was so brilliantly done. A, B, and C stories (with an arguable D, if you want to add Quark's planning of things), and the episode didn't feel overwhelmed. THIS is why DS9 is the best series... the character work and the amount of stories they can put into one episode without it being too much.

Rarely do we get Dax and Odo together, and this episode makes me wish we had more of that.

Also illustrates Sisko as a great dad, that entire scene when Jake says he doesn't want to be in Starfleet.

It's time. I'm at that point in the evening when I just want to relax with something light, amusing, and comforting, so ENT: "Precious Cargo" it is. I love it!
It's not groundbreaking, or thought provoking (well, not those type of thoughts, anyway), or an emotional rollercoaster or anything, but it is fun and funny (to me, at least), there are new worlds and new civilisations, first contacts, and lessons learned. And, unlike many other episodes, I can't think of any part that takes me out of it to question why that was done, or why this didn't work, or why they said that. It is its own consistent, self-contained universe.

Nomad? No, just disappointed that (IMHO) better episodes exist! But for me, the cure is always:

TOS: "The Immunity Syndrome"

Yes, it's patterned on plot beats that "The Doomsday Machine" had. No, it doesn't explain HOW this big amoeba can traipse around the galaxy at speeds worthy of the da-da-dah-dummmm-brrrrring music melodrama as, by the time it could get to Earth cuz it's always Earth and the rest of the "most densely populated part of our galaxy", the sun would have supernovaed and everyone would be making toasted marshmallow smores despite being toasted. Hmm, what if the doomsday windsock was a prophylactic aimed against the amoeba and not the borg killer fanwanky thing? But I digress.

And yet, this is one of the few Trek episodes where there's a biological fritter that lives in outer space somehow that somehow gets one to ignore the sad reality of infraluminal speeds and the relative distances to other planets in order to actually enjoy the threat of the week therein. I mean, that takes some good writin'. After all, when's the last time you tethered a GPS leash to an ant to find out it crawled up from Marfa to Manitoba within a feasible period of time.

I think the reason is the sheer novelty combined with bypassing enough realistic issues to grab you early on and keep you engaged. Ignore warp speed entirely; there's this big blob of nothing out there and you end up inside it. You're slowly dying as a result and the ship needs an adjusted energy usage. You keep flying around and, eventually, find a giant amoeba thing. That's pretty dang creepy. Then, go fig, the local doc talks about it breeding: 2, 4, 8, more. Complete without cheerleader song, but with a veiled sense of fear that now we humies are the antibodies fighting off this giant germ. Okay, that's brill! Forget warp speed reality, forget the cheerleaders if you can as well. This episode's parallels and allusions more make up for technical nitpickery and are very well-timed in script. Then again, I adore a lot of "Space: 1999" where it's mandatory you overlook and roll with the implausible premise and focus on the actual episodes therein, as those are where the most needed coherences are.

The CGI - as much as I like the idea of showing the protoplasm and fog-like nature of it, the ship in proper darkness, and one script fix to better showcase the ship outside the blob as opposed to after entering it, I still never rewatch this with the new effects. The originals are just so good!

Okay, this one isn't as much sci-fi and I don't like how one character is treated, but

TOS: "The Gamesters Of Triskelion"

nails what makes Trek Trek really well, and I can see why Margaret Armen would have become lead script editor had TOS received a fourth season. Her scripts always did something a bit out of the ordinary and novel, and she nailed the characterizations from the start. Whatever else with various stories, character dialogue always sparkles.

Kirk's impassioned speech to "The providers" excels.

The providers are, for all their nuances, honorable.

We get other than "the big three" to liven things up.

The episode isn't afraid to show some nasty things, even off camera and hinted at, and Uhura (off camera) does successfully defend herself. Kirk may be helpless when one of his crew is threatened, but they still can take care of things when push comes to shove. No pun intended.

"You're out of your Vulcan mind!" is first coined in this eppy and that's the best censor-bypass for a double-entendre swear ever invented. Frak everything else!

True, Shahna is "dine and ditched" by Kirk when he grants others asylum. My headcanon cobbles up the notion that Shahna eventually takes proper co-rulership of the planet and uses what the Providers (and Kirk) taught her to good effect. I get an impression Kirk intrinsically knew that, so is it really as much "dine and ditch" and not something other or greater?
