Game The Most Disliked Introduction Of Recurring Star Trek Aliens

This list is probably the most fun to put together: my tribute to the biodiversity of Trek! A list of introductory appearances of the aliens that went on to become recurring or ongoing presences in the Trekverse (some of them much more prominently than others -- some of these we only see once, but hear more about beyond that appearance; I was basically looking for as many aliens as I could find that resonated beyond the confines of a single episode).

THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below is a list of episodes and movies that introduce an array of different Star Trek species. Eliminate your FAVORITE or the one you deem the 'BEST.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

A NOTE ON ELIMINATION CRITERIA: Feel free to eliminate based on your love of the aliens, the episode, or how the episode introduces the aliens -- technically we're eliminating the episode, but there's no "wrong" answer for how to frame what makes that episode your favorite, it can be just about the listed aliens.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

In the 2019 Least Disliked games, this was run as "The Least Disliked Introduction Of Recurring Alien Antagonists" -- so it excluded all the friendly or ally species that are on this iteration of the list -- and the winner was the ROMULANS: "Balance Of Terror", TOS season 1.

The Vulcans are by far my most favorite species (and you can't go wrong with Orions, Talosians, or Humans for that matter), and The Cage had the honor of introducing them, albeit off-handedly (Where No Man and Corbomite does a better job defining Spock's Otherness, and Vulcan as a culture emerges best in Amok Time). But The Cage also gets points for giving us this thing called the Star Trek universe. So it's an easy elimination.

The Naussicans made for an unsettling and formidable foe and their first appearance in "Tapestry" is certainly a memorable one. Plus, it's a great Picard/Q episode that serves as a reminder that the sum of all of our experiences --- good, bad and ugly --- make us who we are, and that we should embrace our mistakes to learn and grow from them.

Taking out "MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE".

Not only is it a great episode, but it began the Hirogen arc of VOYAGER season 4. I really loved the Hirogen. A truly predator species that only wants to hunt you, and just enioys the hunting. It's a very basic urge of them, very primal. And they looked quite impressive, too.

Other than the Borg, they are the only species that Voyager can legitimately encounter across the seasons, due to the nomadic nature of them. I always found their episodes to be a treat.

I am going to save "Caretaker", because this pilot really does a lot of exceptional world-building with all these new aliens, which the series is then entirely incapable of capitalizing on. But I was struck recently how the introes of particularly Neelix & Kes, our Talaxian & Ocampan standard-bearers, are out-of-step with their characterizations in the series. They're much edgier, dirtier characters in this pilot, true scrappy alien survivors from a harsh environment -- that's a version of them that could have made sense as a couple. But after the pilot, all their rough edges were gone... which I suppose you could say of the Voyager premise as a whole.

11001001 is a great story in its own right but the Bynars are cybernetic critters unlike the Borg, Cybermen, or most other sci-fi creations. Repeated uses would probably result in diminished returns unless a writer really added something big and compelling, but their premiere was pretty dang great in selling their methodology, background, and so on and it's easy to see why they'd return regardless.

Oh, would the alien shellfish critters from "Conspiracy" be retroactively included as "Coming of Age" refers to them?

Saving "THE THOLIAN WEB". This was a great episode in a season that was not their best. The Tholians were a great creation and idea... they aren't even humanoid, but they're not noncorporeal. Very unique in the franchise. They've been referenced MANY times, but we don't get to see them again until ENTERPRISE.

A solid season finale that establishes two major players of The Dominion superpower and helps set the stage for one of the key ongoing storylines of DS9. Plus: some good character development for Nog.

The Jem'Hadar and the Vorta are great examples of complex antagonists. Both are ruthless and intimidating in their own way, but there's a tragic undercurrent to their existence as well; the show never lets its audience lose sight of how dangerous the Jem'Hadar and Vorta are, while also exploring the many ways in which both races are doomed to a life of enslavement and exploitation.

Eliminating SPECIES 8472: “Scorpion”, VOY Season 3.

Awesome action-filled two-parter in which Janeway has to solve an almost impossible dilemma. Turn back, trying to find a peaceful planet to settle upon, in the knowledge that if 8472 defeats the Borg they might find themselves in the field of fire again, or ally with the Borg, as the 8472 seem even "eviler" than them? Generally speaking, I personally like the early Voyager years with their somewhat more unique flavouring a bit more than the slightly more generic format of the later years, and this episode inaugurated those later years. Still, this was still an awesome outing, upping the stakes, upping the pace, upping the production values, well, upping a lot.

Species 8472 itself also seemed to have some potential at this point, but quickly fizzled out, unfortunately.
