The setup of and buying into this story relies heavily on really believing that Scotty now hates all women everywhere because a female engineer had him bonk his head on something. At face value, that's really stretching things, even for the mid-1960s... but wouldn't it be neat if McCoy was stating all this while Redjak was inhabiting his brain, to set up the issue with? That resolves a lot of the misogyny and as Kirk generally takes Bones at face value and all...)

It's one of the few times when Kirk overrides Bones as well, for good and obvious reason. The episode has a lot of great jump scares and other dramatic stings too.

But, yeah, Redjak can jump from body to body. In a rewatch, it makes perfect sense that it was setting things up by the timing of the Enterprise and to set up oodles of murders. While 60s Trek would use exposition, there's enough episodes where they leave it to inference and I think this is one of them as well.

Redjak can even inhabit computer circuitry, despite being electronic rather than chemical, which leads to a moment that is questionable but not episode-breaking. Besides, the brain is electrochemical and if one doesn't think about it too much, it'll work.

Some high concept episodes grow old on me. Not this one:

Yeah, it's got a quick and tidy ending that at least isn't shown onscreen with a corny visual effect, and the court martial trial scene is a bit naff, but we have a return for the Romulans (albeit generic), and the neat use of a broken code that everyone knows the Romulans will intercept as a plot point.

Chekov gets some well-timed humor for once, plus some rapport with Sulu.

Cmdr Stocker is shown to be a nit time and time again. Let's see, flailing while under attack by the Romulans, having McCoy hold off on treatment investigation while he still can, just so McCoy can be in the trial because that's more exciting drama...

The initial shock of the aging is pretty good. But it wears thin.

But of all the stories to bypass the big discussion on mortality, this one shouldn't have bypassed it. Still, one can still empathize...

Two of One for great acting and singing and some good contextualisation for why Picard is the way he is. While it can be debated whether or not one of the most famous characters of a franchise who was around for 15 years solid needed backstory, it certainly was an enhancement.

Picard season 2 is underrated, I will carry that banner and defend it.

Between the tea and the clones, how much more high concept does this get?

An interesting subplot begins and ends quickly with Worf, encountering an ailment that most Klingons get during childhood but was delayed for him. As a result of Dr Pulaski covering for him, he offers a tea ceremony for which she agrees and takes an antidote preemptive as the tea is otherwise toxic to humans. it's nice to see sci-fi reflect that not all foodstuffs are species-compatible as Trek would eventually forget about that in favor of ASMR fluff, which reminds me to get some cheesecake later. Dr Crusher would never do the Klingon tea ceremony.

Note how the teaser bypasses the two colonies' merging issue, which is also integral to the plot as both colonies came from the same species! (Sorta like Vulcans and Romulans, but within the span of centuries, not eons.)

It's also talking about abortion parallels in an interesting sci-fi way as well as basic genetic awareness in keeping species from going extinct.

Plus, we get the fire suppression system that never gets brought up again.

True, both colonies are based on superficial stereotypes. The technological one is far more formal than even the Enterprise crew is, which is saying something. Not to mention all that 80s hairspray. The non-technological colony is presented via some stereotyping. Being part Scottish and part Irish, I've nothing else to say on it apart from it being corny and derived from some stereotyping, true, but it's not terribly egregious or anything or derogatory against everyone (just Danilo) and when it comes to farming, expect hay and animals and adorned hand-crafted attire as such because they don't have machines to do it all with (hmmm, will that unmade episode, "The Measure of a Sewing Machine", come up next and be another antithesis to "The Ultimate Computer"? We well never know!). Then again, Scotty was the biggest exaggerated stereotype when it came to drinking Scotsmen and nobody complained about him and drinking Scotch of all things. Would it help if the colony derived from descendants of Antares Pi IV and they all act like Harry Mudd instead? Well, possibly as it's one more step removed and makes the universe a nice, cozier and smaller place. I guess.

Lastly, Riker is pulling a Wesley by figuring out in seconds what a Starbase took hours to determine. Then again, Riker is quick to hop on it, whether it be a distress call or mating call.

Hey cool, I forgot that the replicators could indeed make real alcohol! So it's not just the fire suppression system that is readily forgotten! But I hope that drink isn't lethal to non-Klingons. And, yeah, the scene has a share of corny and superficial moments, relying on antiquated comedy from the 1950s and it wasn't well-received in the late-1980s either. That's incontrovertibly cringe inducing regardless of nationality pegging, though I feel bad for Brenna, though - apart from drinking, Danilo has nothing in common with Harry Mudd so there's that...
