Are you surprised at the IMDB ratings for all Trek Series ? (TNG 1st, DIS last)

I'd like to see where PIC would drop to if we could pluck all the season 3 votes out. Not to prove anything, just out of curiosity. ;)

These are the overall rating, not the episode average. iirc Picard started out over 8 but dropped quickly to the lower 7s, eventually stabilizing after season 3.

As for credibility, yeah, IMDB has problems and is getting worse, but it’s still the best place to find audience consensus on movies and TV imo. Definitely better than the RT audience score and score and (especially) the MetaCritic audience score.

DS9’s rating has always been oddly low. I can see it being behind the first two, but almost a whole point behind TNG seems harsh.

If anything, I think the surprising thing for me is that it's all rated as high as it is. None of those really seem like bad scores to me. I've always said that even "bad" Star Trek is better than the majority of the programming out there, and this kind of reinforces that belief for me.

Janeway does do a bunch of dumb stuff on Voyager though, as do many characters because it's not a very well written show. But Janeway got the brunt of it because she was the captain and making most of the decisions. But I could see people today trying to spin it as some kind of "Mary Sue" thing like with Rey from Star Wars which was again more a case of bad writing than anything else. All the characters were underdeveloped in those movies.
I'm in the process of talking about VOY at length in my Re-Watch Thread as I go through the entire series in that forum. Most of it I'm talking about for the first time on TrekBBS. I'm currently about a third of the way through the second season.

Obviously, opinions within the Fandom will vary. However, these ratings are interesting. Not surprising that Discovery is low ( it's my least favorite myself). But I must say I am surprised it's dead last and by that wide margin amoung live action shows.

TNG, TOS being that high is not surprising.

Strange New Worlds being ahead of anything modern shouldn't be a shock. But the margin is. It's waaay ahead among the live modern shows.

Anyone else surprised how they rank?

TNG 8.7
TOS 8.4
SNW 8.3
DS9 8.1
VOY 7.9
LW 7.8
PRO 7.6
ENT 7.6
PIC 7.5
TAS 7.2
DIS 7.0

No. Broadly, I think they get it right.

I'd have DS9 a bit higher, agead of SNW. But my top 4 woukd still be TOS, TNG, DS9, SNW in some order.

I'd have LD & PRO ahead of VOY.

I'd have DISCO ahead of TAS.

There are actually only two episodes across all of Star Trek that have been rated below a 5 and that's Sub Rosa and Shades of Gray, both from TNG. Despite everything, no Discovery episode ever made it that low, or TAS episode for that matter. Magicks of Megas-tu got closest though!

Out of the movies, only Section 31 fell to those depths, getting a rating of 3.8.

Though the average IMDb rating is 7.0, meaning that 40% of Star Trek is below average. The most perfectly average episodes include TOS: Gamesters of Triskelion, TNG: Galaxy's Child, DS9: Babel, Voy: Learning Curve and Ent: Fight or Flight.

DIS however had a season (4) with an incredibly low average score. Out of 13 episodes, only two scored above 6, one of them barely. AND mind you, review bombing works both ways. I remember distinctly at the time that ratings for DIS episodes in that season did dip below 5.0; some of them may have been "rescued" by some stans artificially rating episodes a 10 to counter.

The truth is also that many longtime fans with no political agenda whatsoever simply did not like the writing on that show, so low scores needn't necessarily be the result of some targeted campaign. In my experience with other shows too, the IMDb scores reflect the overall sentiment regarding the relative merits of episodes at least within the confines of each series. That doesn't necessarily translate to comparable numbers between DIFFERENT series.
