Game The Most Disliked First Season Episode

Right. I'm at the 'haven't seen it/can't really remember it/ambivalent about it/despise it' stage, so I don't think I'll be saving many more unless I do a LOT of research at Memory Alpha. There are a couple that I kind of like, though. Or rather, bits & pieces of a couple of episodes that I like - the first being Enrique Murciano in ENT: "Fusion". He played Tolaris to perfection as a creepy, slimy, reprehensible Vulcan who assaulted T'Pol (and Archer) - and got off scott free! (He had a much nicer role in Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, though - and is very easy on the eye).

My code of honor tells me a science fiction idea has been neglected, and therefore my sense of justice forces me to save this next episode.

Saving "ROGUE PLANET".

I love the idea behind it. A rogue planet is extremely rare in the franchise. (There may be only 4 examples in total.)

Just like Peggy Bundy's honeymoon:

TNG: "Too Short A Season"

Yeah, I'll admit that scratching for reasons to save episodes is becoming a possibility now...

The de-aging drug is not quite cliche, but it's not compelling.

Indeed, the whole episode feels like a sequel to a previous episode that nobody made...

The episode certainly has nothing to do with "A Private Little War", save for a partially different premise where one side arms one splinter group of folk and in comes the other group who freely hands out weapons to the other group, of which neither weapons-giver is hiding behind a big floating rock saying how some types of guns are good but others aren't... that reminds me to try to stay awake through "Zardoz" again, how can a flick where all the women wore Princess Leia hairdos three years before "Star Wars" came out is quite impressive...

There's some good music in this one.

Ditto for counting the instances of set and prop reuse. And, typical for season 1 TNG where TOS-style ship model kits are dotted about on tables in conference and other rooms, and even a shuttlecraft in one episode for far less than "no reason", Karnas's weapons propped on the wall were taken from TWOK and TSFS... that's right folks, when in doubt in trying to make a new show always make the audience remember the old one instead. At least these phasers almost qualify as "easter eggs" due to relative obscurity.

One good and long camera angle shows that the "granite" struts holding up the briefling room table is just vinyl veneer tacked on... which is as appealing as it is a'peeling... maybe that's the reason for the story title...

The plot? Anti-aging pill poppin' escapade aside, for which it's amazing Yar isn't around to berate Jameson, the twist that Karnas and Jameson are old enemies and Jameson once sold weapons to everyone like how a candy peddler doesn't care which kids come into the store begging or which ones leave all hyperactive - there's some big potential in this, but the story just plops it and moves on. Sorta like Haven having this awesome underlying idea for the Tarellians, but ditching that in favor of other plot ideas that are no less shallow than what this episode is doing and for both stories it's a shame.

The idea of Jameson trying to de-age and topple Karnas with ease should also be more compelling than what's ultimately shown. Heck, the idea of a sequel actually showing developments from an older episode should be compelling. And so far, the track record is a big kinky 0 thanks to the likes of "The Naked Now" where it's an evolved form of whatever cooties existed in "The Naked Time", where nobody asks how it got onto the Tsiolkovsky or where that ship had come from (no logs, really?) , and other questions that even the kid from "When the Bough Breaks" could be able to answer as extra credit make-up points for flunking Calculus 101 so poorly...

The episode had potential but doesn't really know what to do with it. How many rewrites are the cause of the script going nowhere and we can guess where a youthified Jameson took a scene to tell his wife he's frisky and wants to get jiggy, we may never know. But I've watched the episode before and will do so again. There's a style and flow that works despite it all, and there's a good action scene.

Not allowing my sense of justice is an ALTERNATIVE that my code of honor cannot FACTOR...

So I am saving "THE STORYTELLER".

Because O'Brien and Bashir together are always fun. And the Nog and Jake B story was good, too.

Although Burnham is not my favorite series protagonist (or my least), "Will You Take My Hand" brought the first part of her journey to a satisfying conclusion.

Wanted to save a classic Trek this time, but most of what remains is either painful or unmemorable.

My code of honor says there is justice in choosing the following episode, because the ALTERNATIVE choices do not FACTOR in my saving equation.

"Lonely Among Us" is my next save.

It was an interesting premise and a shame we never see the cloud entity again. Plus, I had the action figures of the Selay and Antedeans when I was a kid. (Hurricane Andrew took my collection away.) And Singh has the dinstinction of being the first Enterprise-D crewman to die...somewhat ironic that it was an engineer and not a security officer.

Well that list doesn't have a lot of redeeming qualities anymore...
(can't talk about ST or most of the first season of DISC, since I've seen neither)

I'm having trouble remembering which episode of DIS or PIC is being as they're arc-heavy, so I'm looking them up. ;)

It seems like a lot of arc pieces were moved around in The Impossible Box, and I particularly liked having Picard reunite with Hugh.

You know, I've really hated "Broken Pieces" all along, but I'm almost done with the Picard tie-in novel "Rogue Elements", which is all about the Rios backstory and introduces the holograms, and "Broken Pieces" works a lot better now that I've read hundreds of pages of supplemental material that patches the plot holes which previously sunk this episode.

Which is a bit insane, but there you go. The tie-in novels of this era really do an incredible job of elevating the source material.

The huge shortcoming of the initial live action nuTrek seasons was that they all only worked if you read 2 novels and a comic book and sometimes even listened to an audio drama to fill in the gaps. I mean, I enjoy all this stuff so it's fine for me, but I do wish I could recommend Disco or Picard to my streaming-TV-loving friends and feel like it would actually hold together on it's own. Which does finally happen with Disco season 4, so I'm hopeful this problem is now fixed and in future live action Trek I won't need to wait for a book to come along and fix the plotting problems.

Wow! We've almost reached the point where the whole list could fit on my laptop screen at once!

The ALTERNATIVE to going against my code of honor will FACTOR in my decision to save this next one, which I believe there is justice in my choice.

So I am saving "THE PASSENGER".

Yes, it's probably the worst DS9 episode of season 1, but Siddig hamming it up as Vantika is actually fun to watch. And we also see Odo proving he knows his stuff when he explains to Primmin why taking out an entire grid for one file is smart.
