Game The Most Disliked First Season Episode

Some do muse and quip how Wesley gets justice in this one:

TNG: "Hide And Q"

Some dialogue is truly hokey, the main idea of Q tempting Riker was fleshed out fairly decently as a whole, and the story is still above average given the core ideas afoot - no matter how many scenes of cornball hokum try to derail it all, and the attempts to trip up the story with cringey dialogue are pretty significant in a couple scenes.

The "70% cliche" scene where Riker can't save the little girl because of "a promise" actually works and, yeah, Picard is right - Q very probably set up the entire scenario just for that reason alone. Only this time Q doesn't reset everything like how he normally does... Which is a subtle, or perhaps unintentional reminder that Q is far more deadly a being - before later seasons shift away from that underpinning undercurrent. Or the whole situation was contrived out of thin air, which also fits what Q does, can, or will do. So either way it's all good, just one possibility is a teensy bit more cruel and morbid.

Still can't get enough golden sugar crisp hyperactivity-inducing cereal of this scene:

(It's also a nice bit of continuity toward "The Naked Now" where Geordi laments in not being able to see like everyone else - even if he can see more and better (to the point a lot of the crew are quietly burying envy, despite knowing the device's side-effects). Even if Yar turned him down (while still uninfected) but, upon infection, starts banging everyone she can find... pity he was elsewhere all those scenes! Especially when Data appeared...) But longing isn't actively advancing, and people find others attractive without actually wanting to bang them or be banged by them. In the eye of the beholder and all Then again, Geordi also states "Hey, not bad!" in an alluring tone about Wesley so maybe he's also wanting a triad if not more general threesome that TNN would never have allowed to hint at, not for the main show's main crew. And that's the most important part - the amount of perceptions that audience can decide for on their own is the most refreshing. One can see it in any number of ways and it still works. Like what the VISOR can show only we all have one.

(Wes, in his own way, is otherwise saying "Please turn me back, you made my life ten years shorter by doing this.", but his spoken phrase of "want to get there on my own" is, on reflection, no less poignant. The older one gets, the more one realizes that... and as we all know, Wonderboy can think and commit in sections, after "just glancing at" something, what all "the adults" need weeks to do on their own... no wonder 'The Traveler' is brought in; he's used to save not just Wesley but the entire series with a tangential plotting idea.)

Dream Catcher I enjoy Holo-Janeway teaching the kids about starships and Starfleet. Some good comedic moments here, too, like Jankom shooting himself with his own phaser. Also, that scene with tentacle-Janeway is very well done. Had I been a kid, I would have pooped myself with fright.

The Menagerie was a great way to save money by reusing footage that audiences hadn't seen at that point, and presenting it as new. It was interesting seeing Spock going to desperate lengths to help Pike. I'll save Part I first, even though they're both good episodes.

Poor Pike looks awful after his accident, and of course, only communicating with his beeps.

Uhura is given justice in this episode:

TAS: "The Lorelei Signal"

So does Chapel, but Uhura finally does what should have been allowed onscreen in 196x.

Not last and definitely not least...

The story features some good music...

Using men's life force is pretty creepily handled (in a good way, a good horror story never hurts and this one has an innovation up its sleeve...)

It's also a nice take on the Greek legend of Sirens, which Red Dwarf would also later use as Psirens...

Alrighty then.

What Are Little Girls Made Of? It's Star Trek clashed with B-Movie schlock and I'm aware not everyone is a fan of it but I love it. It's so weird in places and the whole guest cast are memorable.

OK, the list is becoming more manageable.

Eliminating ENT: Civilization

A nice, mid-tier episode. Not particularly strong perhaps, but neither particularly weak. And I just happen to like it, don't quite know why.
(I can't eliminate anything from DIS or beyond, due to not having seen those episodes (I've seen DIS once, but that's not enough for me to have a sharp mental image of every episodes).

My code of honor requires me to do justice by performing the followimg action...

Clearing SNW off the list by saving "The Serene Squall".

Good episode with lots of fun stuff in there, not the least of which was

Pike trying to instigate a mutiny with cooking. And Una's reaction to his name dropping a similar situation. That duo has great chemistry together.

I would have saved that one earlier, but I only just now realized it was still on the list. Frankly, SNW should have been the first series saved because it has the best first season of any show since TOS... and it would only be saved before TOS first simply because of episode count.

Our search for justice continues by using a code of honor as a compass...

So "THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS" is saved. It's never boring watching Kirk outthink a computer, and we get to see who THE PURGE movies really ripped off their material from.

I think it's interesting the order the shows are getting off the board... first LD, then VOY, then SNW, then PRO (the last two in consecutive eliminations)...

One thing we should note, though... each of the ones you listed had only 10 episodes, with the exception of VGR. And even that is not a true thing, since UPN held back 4 of their first season episodes for season 2.

I always hated that... I think keeping those 4 in would have given season 1 a better overall score and impression.

I'll stay with TAS for one more and save "The Slaver Weapon." I am so glad the Kzinti have resurfaced in the streaming age! They are delightful.

Three of which have 10-episode seasons, which skews things a bit? Then again, I'd place most or not all of LD above a few TOS and TNG episodes too... :D

Just saw your post. Nin'jaroon'ied. :D

Of its time or not, and it definitely is of its time, and despite moments in it that grate (especially some overgeneralizations), there is still some budding things that give it some justice:

TOS: "Mudd's Women"
Mudd is simply entertaining as far as conniving villains go, and is very well cast.

The idea of "drugs are bad, its your self-perception that's important" is two decades ahead of its time. Some TNG episodes do the self-perception routine (e.g. Wesley getting training for command duties) but without the drugs (which were kept to that one episode where Judson Scott, Khan's second-in-command, guest stars...)

Considering the suits and censorship, the fact Eve (interesting choice for character name - a first, you might say, in a way) is talking of equality and not being an object. How did this get past Gene as he, especially in the 70s, spoke of writing people as objects*?!

EVE: "Not someone to help you... (pops a pill) but this kind: Selfish, vain..."
While I did remove some of the dfialogue, which was there to appease the Suits of the Fifties, the core idea being sketched out in that story as much as they could. Eve is arguably one of if not the first TV character to do this, even if it's mired with nuclear familyisms. Different strokes for different folks, that becomes a topic in of itself...

And later, another big point:
KIRK: You either believe in yourself, or you don't.

Long before Yoda too, in fact...

Yeah, the "this last dose wasn't a drug, just jello and we threw in blinking lights to fool the audience" was a bit cod... the story is a bit uncertain of itself, ironically, and all they needed to do is just keep it looking like a pill and not an OTT 60s science fictioney-looking thing...

(Note not just Mudd's earring, but the poor reframing of the scene from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio and all the chopped-off foreheads and other details. Also note that at 3:14 the computer does not retort "incorrect"... )

Appx 22 minutes in, he goes on about it, but note later context on how they had to get and keep ratings, (and how the audience uproariously cheered on his talk of objectizing and other things quite often) and if it worked in the 60s, would more of it work in the 80s? Well, not quite, he was told by many not to make Troi 4-b00bied and other things... neverm ind that drug-resistant superbug strains of STDs hadn't come about yet... but that's another story.

There is justice in picking this next one, because one's code of honor demands his character not be put anywhere near the bottom of the list.

Saving "THIS SIDE OF PARADISE".

I quite like A Man Alone, so that's next. I just like the early days of Jake and Nog's friendship,, as they were just young enough to not care about their differences. I also enjoyed seeing Keiko get a role as a teacher, after feeling like she had lost her place in the world.

I'm taking out Shore Leave (TOS). I sort ion like it when Trek gets a bit trippy and this episode is just bonkers in places. It barely makes a lick of sense, but even as an example of early instalment weirdness that gets a bit silly, it still shines through Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly. I love it.
