The Maple Leaf Lounge

22 Minutes has done it again, this time on-location in Greenland! It's so on the nose. My favourite quote: "I love Greenland, but it doesn't love me back. It reminds me so much of Melania!"

Those people were good sports about it. I know I don't have a sense of humor about Trump these days.

Premier Eby finally called Danielle Smith out as a traitor. It's about time one of her colleagues did.

Your pre-edit version was so on-point that I assumed it had to be on purpose!

I admit it was a typo, but I realize now how funny it looked and maybe I shouldn't have changed it :D Shouldn't have made the typo in the first place, but somehow my mind went there even while I was tyring not to make a mistake... Poor Trumpty Dumpty.

Yeah, they certainly were. I've kept thinking how they must have notified Greenland, "Ok, we've got a Comedian coming to film on-location dressed up as Trump. Please play along ." Some of them seemed to really get into it, and I assume it must have felt cathartic. The man who came up to him to tell him he was diseased and had a cold heart had me almost fall out of my chair.

And I assume those were real officials.

22 Minutes can be really biting at times, but they do approach real politicians and officials with respect. It's not their fault that some people (Stephen Harper, I'm looking at you and your posse MULTIPLE times) won't cooperate. The only comedian Harper ever cooperated with in one of these mock-the-politician sketches was Rick Mercer, when he had a "sleepover" at 24 Sussex.

I think they would have been a lot gentler with the people of Greenland than they are when confronting Canadian politicians. They're still polite, but more persistent. I still can't believe that the woman who asked Harper what his party could offer the women voters of Canada got hauled away by security. All the other leaders were gracious in giving her a few minutes of their time, along with serious answers. I remember that Gilles Duceppe danced with her.

Harper had a golden opportunity for free air time that he didn't have to pay for, to promote his party's platform, and he blew it. Or maybe he knew the CRAP party has nothing to offer the women voters of Canada (still doesn't) and didn't want to bother BSing his way through some mealy-mouthed lies.

Or... just because it's CBC.

But yeah, it would have been cathartic. If they approached me, dressed as Danielle Smith, I wouldn't hold back. There are few people I've ever hated in my entire life as much as her.

I guess some politicians have a hard time just letting go at times, especially when confronted with comedy. Strangely enough, I've always felt Harper was rather stiff in his interactions, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I found the sleepover sketch. Good grief. This first aired in October, 2006. This must have been between Paul Martin and Stephane Dion (as Liberal leaders).

Okay, this nearly had me in tears. Charlie Angus' recent town hall in Calgary:

It's a shame that the petition to recall Nicolaides (education minister) wasn't successful. He was the first of many in the firing line for Operation Total Recall because the premier used the notwithstanding clause to force the school teachers back to work.

A couple of days ago I was able to sign the petition to recall my own MLA.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyz2x4yzqgo if this happened in America, MAGA would have a field day

What a tragedy that was. :weep:

Never fear, as @camdudetenger2018 mentioned, we have our own contingent of Maple MAGA here that are having their own field day. Some of them are using the identity of the shooter to spread around their toxic bigotry, and the rest of them are busy whining about the possibility of increased gun control.

Yes we call them Albertans :)

I get that you're joking, but for anyone who's reading who might not be aware, certainly not all Albertans are like this, and you can find people like this across the country, including right here in Ontario.

I can rather easily locate some in The Distinct Society as well, sadly.

Thanks so much for tarring all of us with the same brush.

Danielle Smith, her cabinet, and the ones who have been sneaking around, taking 500k "loans" from the Republican MAGAs, etc. are criminals and traitors. Smith should be grateful this isn't 1885 and the Prime Minister isn't John A. Macdonald. His way of dealing with treason was... rather final.

Honestly, I don't take that as a joke. It's anti-Alberta bigotry that I'm well and truly fed up with. We have to put up with it all over social media; do we have to put up with it here on a Star Trek forum?

You know what? You're right. We wouldn't allow this kind of sweeping negative generalization against most any other group of people, so it's not right in this case, either.

I will own up to the fact that I made a mistake here. I've been told many times in life that "it's just a joke, stopping taking things so seriously", so I am a little cautious around coming down too hard on "jokes". So I went with just some gentle "polite Canadian pushback". But we wouldn't just brush off racism or what have you just because it was a "joke". Those kinds of "jokes" are not tolerated. Even things like the "jokes" people used to tell about Newfoundlanders are recognized today as not at all appropriate. So this shouldn't really be any different.

In addition to those basic facts... in cases like this, those kinds of "jokes" against residents of a specific province can only help to fuel the feelings of western alienation, which I'm sure no one wants to do, especially in these fraught times. There are many liberals/progressives in Alberta, and we should be embracing them, not writing them off because of where they happen to live.

@Timewalker , I'm sorry for not saying something before. Thank you for calling this out.

So let's please stop with these kinds of "jokes".

It looks more like a shopping mall.

The indoor shot looks very much like a replica of the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa. I'm guessing they want to bring on the same architect. Good luck to actually building it though.

I'm surprised they're planning on keeping around the original Ontario Place structure, as last I heard it was very much in disrepair.
