Who did Spock mind meld with before "Dagger of the Mind"?

Not to get too deep into “25% different” conspiracy theories, but that could also be part of the reason they’ve been avoiding using “Cage” characters, and why several TOS characters/names are drastically changed (M’Benga is older, Kyle is a different ethnicity, Mitchell is a different ethnicity and gender). Chapel would get a pass because of the Roddenberry connection, Rod would be willing and able to sign off, and Kirk and the other main-seven TOS characters who have appeared on SNW would’ve had their approvals secured with ST09, if not earlier.

Feels like the smarter play there would have been to create new characters.

They did with Ortega and La'an (with unneeded Khan tie-in) . . . but yeah. You and the others summarized the IP landscape pretty well, although studios can and do find or exploit loopholes when it's their IP. Nevertheless, this change of certain likenesses is another delightful element—whatever its root cause—in support of my preferred, mind-relaxing "alternate reality" approach to SNW. :techman:

For your last point, though, I’ve heard many visual artists from painters to sculptors all agree that there’s something weirdly undefinable about Shatner’s face, especially when he was in his thirties and younger, and that he’s a very challenging likeness to capture.
As someone who's drawn Shatner a few times, can confirm.

It may not be as easy as drawing a happy Bones McCoy, but I fail to see why not. Double the few and it likely gets easier. Start with the squint* and the curly cowlick and you're on the way.

(*such as when Kirk admires T'Pau from a distance.)
