Spoilers The Mandalorian | Disney+ | Streaming Nov. 12

So, my worst fears are being realized... Mandalorian's success is now influencing other shows - Picard's episodes are only 42 minutes or so, while Discovery was almost an hour...

It's a different kind of 42 minutes though when dealing with a season arc as opposed to a self contained story.

42 minutes is basically current commercial television timeslot time. I would guess several writers are trained to do the story within the 42 minutes (roughly 42 page screenplay if I remember correctly). While that's not needed for a streaming environment, I suppose they designed these episodes in a way...just in case they need to put it on TV, they won't have editing issues, like older shows that were designed for timeslots that has less commercials (Star Trek, in 1967 was I believe 50 minutes long, with 10 minutes of commercials. Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine were 45 to 47 minutes long. Voyager started to go from 45 to 42, and Enterprise started to be reduced to 42 minutes. very early on, if I remember correctly.

Cartoons in a half hour timeslot were 22 minute shows for a while. I think it may be down to 20 minutes...maybe less. Some anime are designed for 22 minute time slots, but some episodes can go up to 27 minutes long. They can do this because late night anime in Japan is not technically commercial television. It is more like an infomercial for the anime itself, other anime, and related merchandise, since the merch is what gets the show back the costs...due to them having traditional commercial backing via sponsors advertising. This is also why direct from the source anime BD are really expensive (before their economy fell around 2014, it wasn't unheard of to have a BD with only four episodes on the disc that cost $100 USD). This is how shows make their money back.

Picard's episode lengths have been as follows...
  • Episode 1 - "Rememberance" - 46 minutes
  • Episode 2 - "Maps and Legends" - 44 minutes
  • Episode 3 - "The End is the Beginning" - 43 minutes
  • Episode 4 - "Absolute Candor" - 44 minutes
  • Episode 5 - "Stardust City Rag" - 46 minutes
  • Episode 6 - "The Impossible Box" - 55 minutes
  • Episode 7 - "Nepenthe" - 59 minutes
  • Episode 8 - "Broken Pieces" - 56 minutes

Seriously doubt they'd dub over Rosario Dawson. Lots of voices change from live-action to animation, so it's no biggie.

Perhaps the bigger question is: If Ahsoka shows up, could Sabine Wren be far behind? In fact with this being a show about, you know, Mandalorians, it's quite possible that Sabine is actually the catalyst for Ahsoka showing up.

I was kind of hoping if we saw her in live action they'd let Ashley Eckstein do it, but Rosario Dawson is a great choice if we can't get Eckstein. I look forward to seeing her take on the character.

Wow, seven years ago Temis the Vorta called it in this thread! An impressive premonition.

Kid Ahsoka, I have no idea, but adult Ahsoka looks a lot like Rosario Dawson. Who ironically enough is a huge Trekkie who wants to play a Klingon. Is a Togruta Jedi close enough?

Dawson has very large eyes, just give he blue contact lenses, maybe even do it via CGI.

It will be interesting to hear Ashley's reaction to this. Support I'm sure, but I wonder what it would have been like if they'd cast her...

I was gonna call Slashfilm's bluff on this and cry BS, but with Variety also weighing in with its own confirmation, my reaction is "hmm".

Personally, I think Ashley Eckstein should've been given this chance, but Rosario Dawson isn't a bad choice if you're going to let someone else step into Ahsoka's head-tails and face markings.

Probably makeup, it's not that complex of a character, and the new movies have shows have still used a lot of makeup for the humanoid characters.
