Spoilers The Mandalorian | Disney+ | Streaming Nov. 12

I don't mind the shorter run times. I think some shows have hurt themselves by clinging to long run times (most of the Marvel Netflix shows come to mind).

It really depends on the episode, and streaming gives them the option. My favorite episode of Mandalorian is the one where he is disintegrating jawas.. it's fun and breezy, and even though it's my favorite, the fact that it's so short adds to that.. there isn't enough story to make it longer. Yet the last episode I seem to remember being over 45 minutes because it had a lot of ground to cover. The reason I don't watch Black Mirror is that the episodes are always too long.

Shorter runtime simply means less content. It's like paying for an action game vs an RPG. An RPG gives you 100+ hours of gameplay while an action game gives you 12 or less. So why would you buy the action game?

I don't think it was episode length that hurt some of the Marvel Netflix shows so much as the episode count. They didn't always have enough story to spread over the run without making it seem artificially bloated. Not that this hasn't been a problem for semi-serialised 22 episode seasons either of course, but I think it's worse for the shows that are tailored for binge watching as it makes the episodes bleed into each other.

The smart ones have broken their seasons up into arcs, or at least tried to mimic the traditional novel structure to maintain a more tolerable pace.

And that's part of why I suggest the story should be as long as it needs to be. We don't need 50-60 minute episodes JUST to have 50-60 minute episodes just like if a story could be told in 8 episodes, why extend it out to 10 or 13? Shows that aren't arc-based? That's fine. Whatever. But as @fireproof78 suggests, economy of story is a good thing. Frankly for me, that just means to get rid of annoying B-plots, cool by me! (And yes, with anything there have been decent to downright good B-plots but for the most part? Obnoxious!)

So, my worst fears are being realized... Mandalorian's success is now influencing other shows - Picard's episodes are only 42 minutes or so, while Discovery was almost an hour...

42 minutes is what TNG was. I mean really. In the case of Mandalorian, the episodes only needed to be 35 minutes, which is what they were. Trim the fat, tell the story, make it have a bit of punch

Besides, production had finished for Picard long before Mando even aired
42 minutes is the standard length form about 90% of shows on TV. I believe it is shown on TV in Canada, so it makes sense they'd want to keep it at a standard length for them.
I watch a lot of my TV online, either on the network websites or on Hulu, and almost all of them are right around 42 minutes. So it seems really weird to hold this against Picard, since they're just doing most other TV shows do.

It's utterly fucked up that we're basically getting a network level show by paying a premium price then. Full on scam level.

The length really has nothing to do with it for me, I tend to focus more on the budget and quality than the length. They could be 10 minutes and I'd still be just as happy, and just as willing to continue my CBSAA subscription.
Hell, that's exactly what Quibi is going to be, a subscription service where all of the episodes of it's original series are under 30 minutes.

Quibi is basically a streaming service for people who want to watch things while they are waiting for the bus and other under 10 minutes of time they might otherwise waste between doing other thinggh . Not sure how the content is going to be constructed any different than regular length series other than the fact you'll have to qeue up a new episode every 8 where a regular show would have a commercial break.

Honestly, I don't think Disney+ will be worth getting even a months subscription of until they at least have more than 4 1/2 hours of new material i actually want to watch. Maybe by 2022 they will have put together enough new material to justify subscribing for a month to watch. At least quibi is actually planning at least a dozen or more series this year alone that offer some interest to me enough to get it for a month at some point.

Disney+ is for Disney fans. No surprise there.

But there are no commercials.
You watch when you want to. Whennit drops.. 3 hours later.. or the next day.
If you are a fan you are oaying fir exactly when and what you want to watch. Its worth the price of a coffee

Actor Pedro Pascal is in critical condition and has been admitted to the hospital this morning due to severe back pain caused by carrying the entire Star Wars universe on his shoulders

“If you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still trying to hold the world aloft with the last of his strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the world bore down upon his shoulders - What would you tell him?"

I…don't know. What…could he do? What would you tell him?"

To shrug.”
