The Librarians

Well, I'd rather have characters from Arthurian lore portrayed by actors of the caliber of John Larroquette and Matt Frewer than the movies' conceit of having Excalibur be a "character" that flew around of its own volition and acted like Flynn's pet dog. God, those movies were so stupid.

Every time Noah Wylie shows up on the series, he reminds us of how silly those movies were. Like that scene in the arrow/dart shooting chamber when he was running around, screaming his head off and acting like an idiot...a perfect little taste of the original movies' flavor.

I'm really hoping his involvement on the show is limited to "rarely" or "non-existent" in the future. His character is the only part of this show that I aggressively dislike. Especially the jarring "romance" angle that the producers (though probably, Wylie himself) are forcing on poor Rebecca Romijn. I am sensing absolutely no chemistry between these two and his out-of-nowhere kissing her during both of his "special appearances" run the gamut of "workplace sexual harassment" to "super-awkward and clumsy."

Flynn aside, I couldn't be more satisfied with the rest of the show.

Noah Wyle was equally over-the-top in the opening scene of the first Librarian movie, and it was just as grating. At his best, he's tolerable, but when he cuts loose, he's atrocious. He's the kind of actor who really, really needs a firm hand to rein in his excesses -- which makes it troubling that he's one of the executive producers of the series.

I personally like Flynn well enough. Like others have said, it was just evil Flynn that annoyed me. Besides that, I'd be fine if he was a regular, although I like the other cast members too.

No he doesn't need reined in. he's spent the last four years being reined in on Falling Skies where's he's also a producer. The difference here is that unlike Falling Skies and ER, the show itself is lighter in tone.

I don't mind normal Flyn either. They just need to not do Evil Flyn again.

Evil Flynn is *supposed* to be over the top. Flynn is wrestling with the power that he has at his disposal and the knowledge that he is responsible for it. Power corrupts. If he gives in to the megalomania, he will become the raving nutter we saw. I thought the over-acting was appropriate for the scene.

I like Noah. I like Flynn. I liked the movies, too. But I am loving this show.

Of course he is. That's not the problem. The problem is that Noah Wyle's version of over-the-top acting is awful. Some actors are fun when they're over-the-top -- John Larroquette and Matt Frewer being two prime examples. But over-the-top Noah Wyle is obnoxious and grating, substituting loudness for actual comic skill. I'd have no problem with the way they wrote the character if only he were played by an actor who was competent at broad comedy. Wyle is not that actor.

I think Noah Wylie's simply playing Flynn the way he's written, he was over the top in thnis ep. but rather subtle in the pilot. And really Warehouse 13 was just as wacky of a show few people complained about Eddie McClintock's over the top acting on that show.

McClintock always cleverly distracted us with his hair, so we never noticed his hammy delivery. His hair was so odd in the final season that the last minute addition of a romance between Pete and Myka seemed completely natural and not at all uncharacteristic or out-of-the-blue.:)

Again, the question is not about whether or not a character should be over-the-top. The issue is that some actors are better at being over-the-top than others, and Noah Wyle is just plain bad at it.

Moving on...

Apparently the first season is only 10 episodes long, and we'll be getting episode 6 ("And the Fables of Doom") this Sunday, episodes 7 & 8 ("And the Rule of Three," "And the Heart of Darkness") back-to-back on January 11, and episodes 9 & 10 ("And the City of Light," "And the Loom of Fate") back-to-back on January 18. I hope TNT isn't rushing the releases out of a lack of confidence in the show.

The first episode(s) on the premiere night got great ratings, but I haven't seen any information on ratings for the other episodes. Since they've been airing during the holidays...

Optimism!

Maybe they simply have nothing better to show on those nights after Librarians so they're packing on EPs of their new smash hit!

The ratings are solid. This past episode drew over 4 million viewers and a 1.0 demo, good enough for the second highest ratings for a cable original for the night, and up from the previous Sunday's 3.18 million viewers/0.8 demo. TV by the Numbers also said The Librarians was averaging 12.4 million viewers across all platforms.

I expect we'll hear word of a second season pretty soon, assuming the ratings don't suddenly drop off a cliff for some weird reason.

It's fortunate that they rerun the episodes, since now it will up against Galavant and, when the double episodes start, against Downton Abbey (at least in my area).
