How bad is Andromeda?

Always loved season 1. Such great premises. Season 2 was ok... the rest dropped off really fast.

Spotted an Andromeda prop!

Watching season 4 of The Outer Limits and in the episode Identity Crisis are the drop pods from Andromeda used as mind transfer chambers

From what I remember watching from Season Five, a lot of the planet bound outdoor sets/location looked like they came from Stargate SG1.

That's very interesting. SG1 was still in its final years though wasn't it?

Andromeda started out great, but turned pretty unbearable quickly. But if there is one Roddenberry show I think needs a thought-out remake, it's Earth: Final Conflict.

You know I've never watched a single episode of EFC.. Is that worth a spin once?

Well, since both shows were filmed in the Vancouver area, they would obviously have shared multiple locations with one another and with the many other productions filmed in that region. So I'm not sure how this is supposed to be significant.

The first season is a pretty good, thoughtful, intelligent science fiction series, although the original developer/showrunner was fired halfway through the season and you can see early hints of its decline in the latter half of the season, IMO. The later seasons are generally silly and shallow and abandon or dumb down the concepts from season 1. So I'd recommend watching the first season and no more.

Thanks. I will make sure to get only season 1

It's basically "V" but with a lot more nuance and moral ambiguity.

The aliens were more malevolent in Gene Roddenberry's original concept, so the developers of E:FC made them more ambiguous so it wouldn't feel so much like a rehash of V. The ultimate premise has some similarities to Arthur C. Clarke's novel Childhood's End, I think.

Also, Roddenberry's original title for the series was Battleground: Earth, which was changed so it wouldn't be confused with L. Ron Hubbard's novel Battlefield Earth, whose movie adaptation was in development at the same time Tribune was developing the series. I always found Earth: Final Conflict to be a very awkward alternative title. I'm not sure what would have been a better title, though.

According to what the producers said on the fan boards, the issue was that Tribune's execs were driven by profit above all. They didn't want intelligent, thought-provoking shows with complex ideas, they wanted lowest-common-denominator action shows that were simple enough to be marketed internationally across barriers of language and culture, and thereby make them more money in global syndication. Also, they prioritized short-term money-saving over long-term gains, so rather than investing the money it would've taken to create a well-made SF future, they cut corners everywhere they could. And they fired experienced showrunners and replaced them with cheaper ones -- or maybe it's just that it was cheaper to fire producers after a year or two and hire new ones than to shell out the annual raises that veteran staffers would be entitled to (this is probably also why they had so many cast changes).

So it's not that they hated SF/fantasy, it's that they defined it differently, as a vehicle for action rather than ideas, aimed low to make a quick buck rather than aimed high to create something that would endure.
When is was at SFX, witing the Spoiler Zone sealed section, I asked for EFC synopsis. Instead I got internal comments, such as 'No, unless the alternative is a shutdown.'

Being a Puget Sound native and frequent traveler to Vancouver B.C. growing up, it's always fun to watch shows like Stargate, Andromeda, The X-Files, etc and see locations that you've visited.
The old Expo 86 buildings get a lot of use.

Just curious, are those buildings in use, abandoned, or kept as film locations?

The Pavilion is still used both as a filming location and office/retail.
The Science Center is still open.
BC Place (the stadium) still hosts sporting events.
The property was redeveloped into mixed-use with shops/farmers market and apartments/condos.
The light rail system was expanded and connects the location to the airport and downtown.
The freeway where the opening to Deadpool is still there.
All of these show up in various tv and movies shot in Vancouver.

During a vacation of mine in Montreal years ago, there were French-language reruns under a title that I believe translated as Invasion Planet Earth.

Apparently so; IMDb says its French title in both Canada and France was Invasion planète Terre.

Most of the foreign titles are direct translations, but there are some interesting alternatives. A few countries called it "Mission: Earth," but Germany went with the more interesting "Mission Earth: They Are Among Us." Italian is "Planet Earth: Chronicle of an Invasion." Hungarian is "Name of the Planet: Earth," which seems pretty generic.

I think overall EFC is far less of a trainwreck than Andromeda wound up to be. Every season (even in season 5 if you squint real hard) has interesting characters and worldbuilding. But yeah, be prepared for several drops in quality if you go past season one.

Giant Freakin Robot made a video about Andromeda. Inspired by you guys?

"For two seasons, Andromeda featured deep world building, character development and an incredible military sci-fi story about restoring the light of civilization. Unfortunately, it ran for five seasons."
