What do folks think about a new show featuring a young Picard? Not academy young, at least an officer already. Who would you pick to play the part?

James McAvoy, in an ideal world, if they were to do it soon-ish, though I don't think they'll be able to land him on TV.

I think at some point they'll eventually show Young Picard just like
they've shown Young Kirk
because they'll want to find a way to keep the character going even after Patrick Stewart is no longer able to play him.

I think, the new Star Trek series need to go to Netflix to really kick off a resurgence for Trek. This is what Cobra Kai needed after being on YouTube Red. I'm thinking that they should air first on P+, and then go over to Netflix to get a more broad audience.

In the last year any Trek on Netflix has been pulled off.

Of course, I would love for ENT to come back, but I believe the ship has sailed for that.

We'll see.

And now the first 10 movies were moved from P+ to HBOMAX. If any of the series left P+, that's where they might go.

Depends on how much money Netflix is asking. Paramount might not see the benefit if the pricing isn't in their favor.

Current Series
Picard Season 3 --> I'm looking forward to this one the most.
Discovery Season 5 --> I'm looking forward to this one the next most.
Prodigy --> I have to be in the mood for it.
Strange New Worlds --> I have to be in the mood for it.
(gap)
Lower Decks --> For Season 3, I only watched one episode. I don't dislike the show, I'm just not interested.

Prospective Series
Picard's Replacement --> Depends on what it is, but I'm putting it at the top of this category by default.
(gap)
Section 31 --> The moment I really wanted it has passed. Give me an Assignment: Earth series instead.
Starfleet Academy --> I don't know. I'm not feeling it.

Movies (Possible or Otherwise)
Clean Slate --> After so much time, I think this would be the right way to go.
(gap)
Kelvin TNG Film --> I'm curious about what it would be like, if they went there, but that's all.
4th Kelvin Film with Pine --> Ehhh....

I'd say I'm mildly excited, since I've recently seen SNW episodes 1 to 6 and PRO episodes 1 to 13 for the first time recently, and was really pleasantly surprised -- my disappointment after DSC season 4 and PIC season 2 has vanished.

I'm very much looking forward to the remaining episodes of SNW, and I have good feelings about PIC season 3 and more seasons LD ... just about DSC season 5, I don't care much.

I'm cautiously optimistic that the "NuTrek" makers have actually learnt from the rocky first three or four years and have no found approaches that work -- so I'm also optimistic about potential future shows.

If I would have answered this back in 2020 when the thread started then I think I would have said something along the lines of 'cautiously optimistic' although that's not a choice.

I was glad to see the end of the Kelvin era. I didn't hate it but I also realize it wasn't good Trek, especially at the hands of JJ ''let's rehash everything' Abrams.

Unfortunately, my enthusiasm for NuTrek is down in the pits after slogging through STP and STD. Trek has changed radically into more of a soap opera than scifi. I don't understand how TPTB thought that the CW approach to a show was good.

I tried watching the anime but I only lasted 20 minutes or so. It felt like it was ripping off Star Wars Rebels, which I love. The main character was too much like Ezra. I've heard good things about it so maybe I'll give it a try again.

SNW is my only bright hope of actual Star Trek and even so.....I'm not too comfy with how they shoved that one iconic character towards the end(saying it that way in case it's a spoiler for some). But yeah....that's Star Trek to me.

I also realize, sadly, that I'm not the target audience anymore. I'm older. NuTrek needs to build from younger audiences that are into newer shows like Glee, the CW DC shows, etc....

So I suppose I'm somewhat in between Apathetic and Done.

Mine has waned a lot, but that is largely a combination of fatigue at the toxic fanbase and the move to P+.

Of the specific shows:

Disco - Loved the first two seasons, but the third felt like a misstep. Haven't bothered to get P+ for the fourth yet,
Picard - I liked S2 more than most, but I hated the way they shoved aside characters for a TNG reunion which I don't care about in the slightest. I'll be going into S3 with a lot of resentment.
Lower Decks - Will watch S3 just because I happen to have Prime, but I don't find it particularly worthwhile.
Strange New Worlds - Haven't watched it yet given it's on P+ and am only mildly interested.
Prodigy - No interest in a kids' show.
Fourth Kelvin film - Will believe it when I see it.

Update - I finally got P+.

Watched all of Disco S4 and enjoyed it quite a bit more than S3 (though not quite as much as S1-2). Looking forward to S5.

Currently watching SNW S1 - really strong start, but wobbly in the middle of the season. While I'm not keen on the TNG stolidness, this is a bit too far the other way for me (Ortegas in particular is grating), and the frontloading of tragic backstories galore was clumsy.

Current Mood (and this does not represent my “rankings of favorite series”….just legit what I’m most excited about right now)

1. PIC S3: I’m totally juiced for this. But please, Dear Sweet Baby Jesus, don’t fuck this up.
2. SNW S2: Will be great to see if they can take another huge step forward with S2.
3. PRO S2: I love watching this with my boys, so it’s hard not to be excited.
4. DSC S5: I love DSC, but it kind of is what it is at this point, so it’s harder to be drooling with excitement for the 5th season.
5. LD S4: I don’t really care. It’s a fine show, but I definitely don’t miss it between seasons.

Other Potential Projects:
1. Section 31: I love Michelle Yeoh, and this would be sufficiently different to justify its own existence
2. Starfleet Academy: If done well, it could be really interesting…but if not it could be a disaster. I’m interested to see…
3. Kelvinverse Movie 4: Meh….this ship has sailed methinks.

My current mood ( in Vger23's format)
  1. I am not as pumped as I was in past years, but I suspect I will watch Picard S3 episode 1 at 4 AM. I am usually up early, but do not watch TV. I have made that exception for Picard several times in the past including the premiere. I have not really enjoyed how the show has played out so far. I like it because I am a fan and want to see what happens, but the stories have been kind of meh once all was said and done. Having all the TNG crew and the prospect of other cameos is another draw. I expect my excitement to ramp up over the next week too.
  2. SNW S2 - I really enjoyed the first season, but have not rewatched. Do I need to? It's a fun show, but 10 episodes of episodic Trek is not enough to fully warm me up on the crew. That used to come by S3 with 90s Trek. Not sure how much of that is episode count, or time passed. I could watch this show weekly for sure.
  3. Disco S5 - I want to like the show more, but I keep getting disappointed by the story arc and other absurdities. Last season I wanted to punch the screen when they had Stamets whine about his theory having to be the right explanation. It was pretty anti-science and that is the opposite of what Engineering is supposed to be. I also do not like the galactic barrier. There is no such thing and it is OK to drop items from Trek that are known to be bullshit. I mean why the fuck would there be something at the very edge of the galaxy that is so energetic and destructive? It is utterly absurd and contrary to much of what we know about the universe.
  4. Prodigy. I need to do a rewatch with my oldest. He was interested in something else so I watched the second half of S1 myself.
  5. LDS. Its nice filler. I like having a half hour show to put on when I am targeting the bed in 30 minutes. It has its moments but it is not
Other stuff:
  1. Section 31. I want to see what they can do here. Different is always interesting until it is shown not to be good. With the variation in shows Marvel has been able to show work in a franchise, I have no qualms about doing something vastly different with Trek
  2. A potential follow on from Picard. There are hints that there could be something. I would like another episodic Trek set in that time period because I am boring and like the same just as much as I like different.
  3. Movies - Give me a big screen movie that I can bring my kids to and enjoy then I am all in. If it is something too mature then I will watch it when it hits home.
  4. Starfleet Academy - I guess I am an ageist and don't really want a CW version of Trek. We have Prodigy S2 hitting the Academy angle. I'll watch it, but I am biased against shows where the leads are all exceptionally attractive 20 somethings who are infinitely more competent than any real 20 something.

Picard's last season is a week away and I'll watch it, but season 2 killed any actual enthusiasm I could possibly have. Hopefully it'll blow me away and reignite my love of the brand.

With the money they've spent hyping this (a Superbowl spot which is the most expensive advertising space of the year, and lots of suspiciously similar tweets), it's failure may have a catastrophic impact on future Trek projects.

The Marketing for this has rubbed me the wrong way. I too wasn't a fan of Season 2 so they had a lot of work to do to get back into my good graces, but with everyone gushing about the opener so far and now the writers are acting like everyone has seen the episode, it's kind of turned me off. I'll watch it, but my expectations are actually lowering after the last couple of days.

This has definitely come down to a "when I get to it." viewing.

I've never seen any star trek hyped as hard as PIC S3.

What's bummed me out is how lots of reviews are like "fast forward through S1 and S2 to get to the good stuff! Star trek is back, baby!"

S1 and S2 had lots of problems and missed opportunities but I found both compelling and rewarding.

Anyhow, everyone seems to love S3, so I'm sure I will too

I'm glad people enjoy the currently running shows, I've just struggled to find one that interests me to this point. I was fairly excited going into S1 of Picard, but I was pretty disappointed and struggled to finish it. I went into Discovery curious to see what they would do, but I didn't get very far. I am cautiously excited about SNW, so I ordered the season set. I may check out S3 of Picard if I hear that it's consistently good, but we'll see!

I’m cautiously optimistic after hearing that Terry M might want to do a “Next Next Generation’ type show in the 25th century. But I won’t get too excited until I see that confirmed.

LD S4 will be good fun and I’m looking forward to SNW S2 too. I really hope they don’t fuck up PIC S3 with the TNG cast back. So far, so good. Not interested in Discovery or a possible return to the JJ-verse though.

Having just seen the Picard Finale, I'm finding my enthusiasm for Trek a lot better this year than Last year. Here's how I rank it post Picard now

Lower Decks/Prodigy - I put the animated Treks together. I'm having a ton of fun with these shows and I will always rank them at top

Strange New Worlds - I loved the teaser. I plan to watch season 1 again after I get back from my New York Trip in May

Discovery Season 5 - It's the last season so let's see what happens. Discovery has been always a low priority for me, unfortunately, but after Picard's finale, I wonder how Discovery will go and then I can compare finales.

Section 31 Movie - I'm not a fan of how New Trek has used Section 31 but I am a fan of Michelle Yeoh. I hope it's a good movie and it starts a trend of more Made for Paramount+ movies. In fact, Im excited for more P+ Movies so that's why I am rooting for Section 31 to be successful.

Oddly, after Picard, I really don't have much of a need for Trek right now. It really hit the spot. It kind of made me less interested in Trek because I want something more like that, and know it will never happen even if Legacy gets greenlit. I will certainly be here for SNW, but it could come out later and I would be fine. I am still interested in S31 but I became more interested in shows than movies over the last 10 years so I am interested in seeing how well it clicks with me and how good they use the movie event format.

Another thing that kind of bugs me is that they are moving forward with the Academy show when that is going to be 50% of the live action continuing series. I hope it is something I can watch with my kids and not just a bunch of horny late 20 somethings pretending to be high school aged kids.
