Supernatural 6x5 "Live Free or Twi Hard" spoiler/discussion thread

Oh crap...another parodying episode--this time directed at vampires.

Then I'm sure if the entire thing isn't a total farce we'll get treated to a more serious story halfway in. Where did my Supernatural go?

I haven't watched the show since early fourth season (no television; I'll get around to it eventually) but that's an amazing title.

Maybe the reason why you're not liking anything so far this season is because you're going into every episode expecting not to like them. Just throwin' it out there.

This season? His posts have read pretty much that same for the last few seasons. I pretty much know what he's going to say before he posts it.

I actually liked the season premiere. I go in knowing very little about each episode--in fact I avoid spoilers and until the last few weeks I would avoid the trailers. However, kinda like VOY, after a while SN has developed a track record and you sorta know what to expect going into it--silliness, forced low brow humor, parodying and meta-commentary on the genre, stale supernatural creatures/plots-of-the-week, action in the third act where the brothers are placed in jeopardy but knowing they will be okay unless it is a season finale and a nice quiet slow scene to close out the show, repetitive angst between the brothers accompanied by a lot of scowls and sniping.

That was okay for a while but at this point I have to ask why just keep doing the same thing over and over. It doesn't lead to very interesting or entertaining viewing. Then again I very well maybe no longer the target audience member the CW is shooting for--maybe all this stuff is popular and that is why I no longer feel there is a fit between me and the show.

I'm just not really all that excited to see Dean make a bunch of snarky comments about Twilight and teen vampires--because right now a certain CW vampire show has been far more entertaining and consistent in terms of quality than SN has in a few years.

Only if you like the teen vampire melodrama. It's not for me.
The Vampire Diaries isn't about teen vampire melodrama. The relationship is a part of it but it is handled as well as I've seen most tv relationships. The show focuses on a lot of different things--the majority of the show is centered on an evolving, intriguing mythology with thankfully no silliness or parodying which drives me up the wall on SN--instead it treats itself as a serious drama.

The show holds plenty of surprises and steers clear of recycled storylines which I can't say the same for SN which has been tired since S4 ended--my opinion of course--your mileage will vary.

For me The Vampire Diaries has been the most consistent show in recent years with pretty solid outings each week unlike say uneven shows like Fringe or Supernatural and so far shows no sign of a sophomore slump that so many sff series suffer i.e. Heroes, BSG etc. It really is one of the better shows to come out on tv in the last few years. I really think it is a sadly overlooked sleeper amidst a whole bunch of subpar crap that has just cluttered the tv landscape in the last decade.

Sorry but VD (which I watch as a casual viewer due to Supernatural) lost me as a viewer.

It utterly destroyed its lead character, and as such can't be treated as a serious show.

Damon killed her brother, snapped his neck in front of her. And what does Elena do, she stops her friend from killing the bastard.

The show died for me there. She knows the character is a killer, she has first hand knowledge and experience with that.

What type of twisted masochistic bitch is she.

And no the rational that she believes Damon was aware that he currently could be killed doesn't hold any water at all with me.

Sorry but if that was me, I would be consigning Damon to the flames myself.

Compare that to SN, someone tries to kill Sam (even to make a point) and Dean wants them Dead! Gordon wants to kill Sam, Dean is absolutely clear that he is going to kill Gordon. Ruby is messing with Sam, Dean tries several times to kill her. Ruby just shoots him in the shoulder, sells them out without really thinking of the consequences to them, and Dean takes away her protection from the hell hounds consigning her to damnation.

You can have some stupid plots, and poor dialogue, but you can't destroy your characters primary relationships. To do that utterly ruins a character. It makes that character no longer believable and destroys the fantasy world that the creators try to envelope the viewer in.

I don't think vamps in the spn universe have to be invited in. Wow--what did Sam do to get out of hell? Was he so desperate he agreed to kill Dean? The man is seriously messed up.

I think Sam came back from Hell without his soul. That's why he's acting like he has been. If he had his soul, it would have at least kept in check. I think there's going to come a point in which Sam and Dean would have to journey into Hell to get it back. Maybe they would have deal with Crowley, the new King of Hell, in the process.

Alrighty then. I can hear the screams of the Sam girls, but I like it. I am hooked. Definitely not a Twilight parody. All the dark alleys and the deprivation of color--I love the look of this episode.

SERA GAMBLE YOU HAVE DONE THE IMPOSSIBLE--YOU'VE MADE ME INTERESTED IN SEASON SIX. BRAVO!!!!

As our favorite vulcan :vulcan: would say "that would explain a great number of things" Someone has Sam's soul?....
