Unlike Dorian, I have watched all but two episodes of the show, and have enjoyed aspects of it. I like that they do treat it more as a drama then the campy adventures of True Blood.

But at least with a campy show I can accept when characters act in ways that don't make sense.

And SN has had several strong female characters (understand strong doesn't mean they have to be good). We have had Mary, Ellen, Jo, Pamela, Ruby (third season version), Bela (even when I hated her, she was a strong character played well), and we have had several one shot characters that I really adored. From girl next doors, to sheriffs, to Psychics, to damsels in distress.

Seriously. Someone wnats to defend VD.

Simply put there is no rational reason on that show why Elena would let Damon live. She's an orphan, who had close up views of her adoptive parents dying in front of her. She has seen her brother nearly die and be targeted for death already. She has seen people she knows and who are close to her family be killed by Damon, and she gets to watch this being who she utterly knows is a killer. He has killed for funs, for malice, for thrill and for hunger. And he snaps her brothers neck in front of her eyes, and keeps threatening harm to her and her family.

Sorry but for her to be a real character she would watch that SOB die. Period.

Put it in real life terms if some one took a shot at your family, and kept the gun out and kept threatening your family and you saw some one (who also had good reason to see him die) start to kill him, your telling me you would stop that person? Seriously?

Its one thing to have a stupid plot in an episode here or there, or to have dialogue that isn't appropriate to a character's voice. But when you take a character and make them a joke, especially in what should be some of the most dramatic and hard hitting moments for that character you have ruined that character.

Sorry but your post is based on how you think everyone should act and not everybody responds the same way.

She's IN LOVE WITH A COLD BLOODED KILLER!! Stefan killed people for quite a while before he got his animal fix. She's certainly a-ok with being with a killer.. and that's only the start....

Suffice it to say that while you usually have great insight into SN your rather overstated outbursts in regards to TVD are way overstated...

Yes I want to defend TVD. I enjoy it far more than SN and in its first two seasons it is more consistent that SN was.

I have no problem with Elena not wanting to destroy Damon--she clearly has conflicted feelings toward him. Her brother survived and at the end of the day she strikes me as the kind of person that doesn't want to see anyone die--whether they are good or some homocidal maniac. Now had he actually succeeded in killing Jeremy then I'd have a much bigger issue with her being conflicted.

I honestly don't see this as an issue that would destroy one's ability to enjoy the show. It is one part of a much larger tapestry that even if one was to be bothered by it and doesn't want to go to the trouble to rationalize her behavior there is plenty of other stuff to enjoy. That is my problem with SN it relies too much on the brothers to anchor the show and as a result if they act like idiots or don't hold my interest or the writers fixate on their angst it just pretty much leaves me with nothing else to grab onto.

I still stand by my earlier remarks--TVD is one of the better and more consistently entertaining shows on tv that has a nice cast of characters, takes itself seriously, balances character and plot, has developed an intriguing mythology that isn't overly complicated and has solid writing. It was my favorite show last year along with The Legend of the Seeker and so far this season it is leading the pack as well. I'll certainly take it over crap like Caprica, V, Smallville or SGU.

While SPN has it's bad moments oerall it's a great show and I don't agree with your opinion on it.. that said.. no big deal..

But I agree with your comments on TVD and Legend of the Seeker.

I have a question for fans of this show.

I've only just discovered its existence, and I'm thinking of checking it out. But I'm not sure I would enjoy it.

On the one hand: aside from Trek, my tastes in TV generally run to crime dramas--Homicide, The Wire, the Shield, the Sopranos, etc.

But on the other hand: I'm also quite interested in stories about demons and black magic--Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist are two of my all-time favourite movies, and the last book I purchased on eBay was The Mephisto Waltz. And from what I've read, this show sounds like it's right up that particular dark alley.

And on the third hand: I'm in my early 40s, and a lot of genre shows nowadays seem to be made for a somewhat younger audience. That's fine--it's just not for me.

The DVD sets are curently on sale where I live--I could pick up the first three seasons for the price of one.

Should I take the plunge?

^^ I think being a fan of gritty crime drama and horror movies would work well for Supernatural. Despite being on CW with young leads I don't really think the show would be averse to an older viewer (I'm near 40 myself).

Personally I'd recommend renting first, but three seasons for the price of one is an excellent deal. Especially for a show like SPN which got better with every season for the first four years (the fifth season was still very good, but not as good as S4 in my opinion). The first half of the first season is a little hit-or-miss, but things really improved (for the most part) starting with the back half. And don't worry, SPN is surprisingly gritty for a CW show. There's a good amount of gore and violence (for a broadcast show). But the core of the show is the relationship between Dean and Sam, the two main characters. Fortunately, the characters are the show's strongest element.

I think if you like stories about demons and black magic then you'd like Supernatural. Hell, I'm actually not a big fan of those type of stories but I really love the show. Plus I'll be 43 next month. It may have younger leads but it's not really geared toward younger people. One of the brothers, Dean listens to classic rock. Being an old fart I'm not sure if younger people are into that as much as old guys,

Should I take the plunge?

I would say yes--it is wildly uneven ranging from brilliant to awful. I thought S1, portions of S2 and S4 were the better years for the series. S3 and S5 were pretty average and disappointing.

The show really doesn't break any new ground for the genre--with SN you shouldn't expect any new spins on old chestnuts. Plotting isn't its real strong suit so I find the arcs of the season rather disappointing--serving mainly as a MacGuffin in the background--although I think one reason why I enjoyed S4 so much was how well it balanced character and plot that year.

I got into Supernatural since I really like supernatural/horror shows. Some of my favorites are Tales from the Darkside, The Outer Limits, The Twilight Xone, the late 80s cult fave Friday the 13th The Series, The X-Files. The show does a fairly good job with its atmosphere and make-up despite a limited budget in the middle years.

I'm 33 and I do at times feel like the show caters a little too much to the teenager crowd and one aspect I really can't stand is the propensity of the show in recent years to do a lot of comedy episodes that are low brow and filled with all sorts of juvenile humor--I prefer serious dramas to not tread into this arena that is why I loathe True Blood, Buffy, Angel, Hercules, Xena, Lexx, Dr Who.

Sff these days pretty much suck--I can't stand any of the SyFy channel shows like Haven, Eureka, Warehouse 13, CAPRICA.

I'm a fan of TNG, DS9 and the third and fourth seasons of ENT. Of the newer shows in recent years I liked LOST although the weak way it ended was aggravating; nBSG was good for the first season and half of the second; loved the first season of Heroes; The Vampire Diaries I find to be one of the better shows these days. The Event is also picking up. I enjoy Chuck, unapologetically admit to considering myself a fan of Gossip Girl. I also enjoyed the original Melrose Place, DALLAS, and Hill Street Blues. Can't stand all the crime procedurals like CSIs, Law & Order SVU. I could appreciate the Sopranos as good drama it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Overall I say go for it. It isn't as good as The X-Files and it can't hold a candle to a show like Friday the 13th The Series which embraced its dark nature but in the sea of crap these days it should mostly satisfy.

It's much better than Friday the 13th the series. Old Dark Horse, SPN appeals to a great many 40 somethings like you and myself because the two brothers aren't vapid, blank heart throbs. There are a lot of jokes that 20 somethings might not even get. The pilot is great, but the first few eps are just stand alones, a bit boring for my taste. It's episode #6 of the first season where things really start to get interesting character wise. You won't believe the difference from season one to season two. These two main characters are allowed to react and grow and change in a way that ST characters (save DS9) never did.

Also, SPN can be brilliantly funny, and not just in a current pop culture way like Buffy. You'll be surprised. Ben Edlund joined the staff in season two and it was great.

Interesting episode. I really enjoyed it and like the fact that they are slowly building up a new arc. I hope this show lasts for a few more seasons.

I like what somebody mentioned earlier, that Sam has lost his soul, but don't think his smile when Dean was attacked was necessarily evil. To me it came across as cold and detached. It was like he thought that Dean could get the job done as a vampire. It was more like a calculated move on his part.

It could also be Sam's Demon heritage has taken him over a little more.

However, it turns out I am really enjoying the season.

I got my brother-in-law hooked on the show and he's 53 and generally watches shows on channels like The History Channel, Duscovery, etc.. etc..

well worth your time.
