Caught this yesterday and was delighted... For the most part.

If I hadn't known this was a James Gunn production, I would have come out of it saying "That really seemed like a Guardians of the Galaxy move."

While I do love Cavill's turn as Supes, I do like this new interpretation. Giving Clark/Superman more of an everyday kind of guy quality is refreshing.

I did think, however, that the occassional "gosh" and "golly" he utters felt forced.

ETA: I thought of this after I posted.

Are Hawkgirl's wings natural or part of her outfit? When she was lounging around the Hall of Justice, there was no sign of them. I don't know much about the character, so I wasn't sure.

Also, when Supes zaps the flying soldiers, they all were moving around after they hit the ground. There's no way they'd be alive after falling from even half that height.
  • It's a comic book;
  • They're wearing battle armor; and
  • They're gonna be sore in the morning.

Speaking of Supergirl, didn't she leave Krypton as a young teenager? Shouldn't she know about Kal-El's parents wanting him to rule to world? Shouldn't Superman have asked her about it when she came back?
Supergirl was living in Argo City when Krypton blew up, so she might not have known that much about what the Els were up.
I always assume they're the same guy as well, as you say a very soft reboot each time, but all the things that happened to Connery happened to Lazenby and what happened to Moore happened to Dalton and Brosnan.

Tracy is referenced several times in the Moore era and once with Dalton.

Craig is definitely a different man though.
And with the way No Time to Die ended, the new Bond will have to be a different person again.

Supergirl is kind of a rough character, so they're saying. Maybe she doesn't think Jor-El's advice about dealing with human beings is so fucking off base.

Do we even know that she and Kal are close enough to talk about family?

Some people (not necessarily here) are assuming a lot about what new insights Supergirl will provide about Superman’s little Krypton twist. My guess: The film won’t directly address it at all. The reveal served its narrative purpose here, and I expect Gunn rightly feels it’s in the rearview. General audiences are not waiting with bated breath for the other shoe to drop regarding Krypton, and neither are fans like myself. Supergirl has its own story to tell. One hopes and imagines that scribbling in the margins of Superman to placate a subset of fans will not be a priority.

Depends on what direction they go. Kara might even have a Kryptonian mentality about humans, at least for now.

I agree with you. I do think though, that we will get more of an insight into Kryptonian culture in a way that might address and/or raise more questions.

I love it anyway.

He frees himself of his inhibitions, the commandments of his (biological) father, and comes out almost as a god. And after righting the wrong with his almost unlimited power, Luthor's cruel stroke that he was too weak to suffer, he finds solace to return to his humble self. He'll sacrifice almost anything for humanity, because he's very good, but in the end he has the emotional needs and desires of any mortal.

It's a beautiful take.
The funny thing is the final ending to the first Donner Superman movie was taken from Superman II when they realized there was no earthly way the original plan of finishing both films during the original production was possible. At that point, Donner and the Salkinds didn't have a big enough ending for part one, and they didn't know if the movie would even be successful enough for Warner to even bother releasing the sequel. Thus, the decision was made to move the "turning back the world" ending to part one, and adding in Lois dying to justify the action (which didn't happen originally), making the plot more standalone.

The ending makes a lot more sense in the Donner Cut of Superman II, back where it was originally intended - he's having to clean up all the damage done by Luthor and the Kryptonian villains across the two films. Either way, to Mudd's point, the script is held together mostly by vibes and the verisimilitude generated by everyone involved with the production. But, I also love the living fuck out of the film regardless.

Gunn posted the Hall of Justice murals on social media.

So, I recognize Wesley Dodds Sandman, Amazing-Man, Silent Knight, Wild West El Diablo, Black Pirate, Liberty Belle, Bulletman & Bulletgirl, Max Mercury, Phantom Lady, Atomic Knight, Freedom Beast, Wildcat, and Vibe. Some of the others look familiar, but I can't quite put a name to them.

What the heck is Vibe doing in that mural? He was a newbie that died in the Detroit League, right?

I saw this on another forum. It looks fairly accurate. Not sure on Slam Bradley. An early Siegel and Shuster creation. Others think it’s Iron Monroe https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Munro a post Crisis creation to replace Superman in golden Age stories. Who is based on some of Siegel and Shuster pulp inspirations for Superman.

I think it’s fairly obvious these choices are based on certain factors. Variety in terms of time period and powers. But also ethnicity. Vibe probably for all. Most likely set in 80s when he was created. At this point it’s hard to known if we will ever see some of these characters in film or tv.

It’s interesting that we do not see Golden Age, Justice Society characters like Green Lantern or the Flash. I wonder if they are being saved for a potential Earth 2. They have modern day counterparts with same powers. While Sandman and Wildcat never really did. Plus Wildcat could train Black Canary being part of the main Earth.

Madame Xanadu, Silent Knight. Hippolyta, Black Pirate. Miss Liberty, Windrunner (Max Mercury), Super-Chief, El Diablo, ?, ?, Sandman, Amazing Man. Zatara. Liberty Belle, Bulletman. Max Mercury. Bulletgirl. TNT & Dyna-Mite, Freedom Beast, a cheetah, Phantom Lady, Atomic Knight, Wildcat, Vibe, ?, Max Lord

That's not Hippolyta, it's the Amazon character from Demon Knights. I posted her name in the DCU thread but I can't remember how to spell it now.

Yeah, if they ever address the El's message again, I have a feeling they'll save it for a Superman solo sequel. Supergirl is going to focus on her and her issues, and I can't really see Clark's message from his parents really having that much of an effect on her.
