Spoilers Supergirl - Season 5

I want to see the story about the environmental travesty that occurs after Lex admits that no one wants to buy his Lex dollz, and he dumps half a million dolls into the sea.

Supergirl
Season 5 / Episode 17 - "Deus Lex Machina"

SG/Kara: Eh. She's more of "B" player in her own series of late, even before MB's real world situation.

Lex / Lena / Eve: I have the bad feeling the entire Lex plot is not going to have long-lasting effects, and will boil down to SG grinning in some sappy-assed season finale. All of the creative real estate a production could get from the Lex Luthor character is--so far--not being used other than some babble / revenge scheme.
The showrunners tried to pull a Thanos by having most of this extremely disjointed season's events--including Jeremiah's death--all be the behind-the-scenes work of Luthor. Now that Eve feels betrayed, no one would be shocked to see her spill her guts to Lena, who in turn will use Eve by modifying her eugenics program so she will "do harm" to Lex, giving her some backdoor out of responsibility, which would be typically unethical of the showrunner in who can get away with evil acts. At the end of it all, I believe some will wonder what the use of Lex meant for this series...

Lillian: Still not sure what side of the conflict she will fall on.

NOTES: Once again, the horrible late 90s video-gamey FX with the Martians, SG and the Sun-Eater. No allegedly top network show should dump such unprofessional work on audiences.

GRADE: D.

Have you ever actually played a game from the 1990's? The SFX look nothing like a game from that time period.

Oy vey.

It's a weekly TV show not a not a multi-million dollar big screen movie. It's not going to be high-end cutting edge SFX.

I actually think it was one of the best episodes of the season. When I see episodes like this, it makes me wonder how the rest of the season could have been so dreary and bad. A fine debut directorial performance for Melissa Benoist.

Lex does make everything better, but the character is ill-served by being tied into the poorly conceived, hopelessly muddled, and dramatically inert Leviathan mess that has hobbled this entire season. It would be so much better to have Lex scheming for his own ends than to have everything he does be in reaction to this other thing that nobody cares about.

This show captures Lex Luthor's personality so well. He's a genius mastermind, but he still can't let go of his egomania and his hatred of Kryptonians, no matter how persuasive the arguments. Although this time, he seemed to find a way to balance both -- to pull off his subtle chess gambit to maneuver Leviathan where he wants them, and also to strike a vindictive blow against Supergirl by renewing Lena's mistrust of her and killing her adoptive father into the bargain. (Fitting that the episode opened with a reminder of his attempts to kill the multiverse's Supermen, since he's essentially killed another "Superman" by bumping off Dean Cain's character.)

I always figured that Paragon Lex consciously shaped the new Earth-Prime universe to put himself in a good place, but he was as surprised as everyone else. I guess it was more of a subconscious influence.

Indeed. I think it's cool when they do these big comic-booky action scenes, since we don't really see that kind of thing anywhere else in live-action TV. The idea of it matters more than how lifelike the execution is. Given that this entire franchise is based on stories told through line drawings and word balloons, it seems weird to demand photorealism from it.

Hello guys,
I hope that the conditions of confinement are bearable for you and that you managed to find an occupation to kill time, without
endangering yourself. :) )

Anyway, a short note to say that though Melissa Benoist's directing and the pretty huge promo since last week, TVline announced that 5x17 was watched by 605K/0.1, what is a new series lows. Without trying to find an excuse, the long break must have discouraged a lot to watch, especially after the 3 postponements the said episode already suffered. That and of course, the fact that s5, even if there are still 2 episodes to be released, is a very disappointing season, that fans no longer expect anything positive now. when TREK_GOD_1 gives a "D", I'd give a "C", at least for Jon Cryer's performance (I'm sick of Lex Luthor but
but her continues to be masterfully played by Cryer).

I'm surprised that no one here mentionned the fact that because of the Covid19, WB TV presidents were forced to oulined a new overall approach to starting up production safely for scripted television in both general and specific ways, which could change some storylines, including intimate scenes, in s6 (Alex/Kelly ; Nia/Brainy and of course, Kara/William... even if I wonder if producers/writers didn't decide to give up the idea of them as a couple unless they go very slowly with this storyline, in the hope that people will end up getting used to them as a couple (BUT the new rules should cut it short to this stiryline!).

Doesn't Eve still have the AI/Hope in her or did Crisis change that? Am I missing something?
Welcome back.

This Eve didn't work willing for Lethiathan.

Rather than getting a cushy Job at Catco, having sex with Mon-El, as a Spy for Lex Luthur, while being a Double agent for Leviathan, becuase she got on board quickly without fuss, on Earth Prime, Leviathan killed her father, and then put Eve on contract work as an assassin, becuase they trusted her not a lot, which is why snipers were tracking her mother and she knew it.

Earth Prime Eve never worked for Lena Luthor.

People are binging old shows.

Momentum.

It's hard to get off the binge train, and resume "regularly scheduled" programming, when you're just 4 episodes away from those assholes on Friday Night lights getting married (again).

@Guy Gardener Thank you!

Did Lena still create Hope? I hate these breaks. :(

[EDIT] I barely remember the Arrow finale. LOL!

Hope started as a blue paper weight, that was invented by Lena.

It's possible that the AI, on Earth Prime infected/possessed a different assistant working for Lena, that we don't know about yet.

Wait.

Blue crystal thing called Hope?

The emotional spectrum.

Hope is a bunch of Blue Lantern Rings?

Apparently, you have not; vignettes in late 90s games were the most "advanced" part of the game, but is incredibly cartoonish by today's standard.

No one would ever accept that excuse for a professional TV series. Black Lightning is another CW/DC series, but its SFX are not amateurish / video gamey at all, and has just as many story demands for the fantastic in every episode. Hell, Star Trek fan films such as Star Trek Continues had superior SFX to Supergirl, and they are in not in the same universe of budget as a TV series from a major production company. Just no excuse.

Ehh. Fans who were going to watch on a regular basis would make themselves aware of the new episode's airdate and catch it. It would be safe to believe the incredibly low ratings have everything to do with the poor direction of the series over time.

Cryer is fine, but he's being wasted. You don't add Lex Luthor--one of the top two DC villains in the company's history--and insert him in a weak revenge / would-be "mastermind" story that is seems to be moving in a predictable direction (especially if Eve complains about Lex to Lena).

You haven't been reading, my friend. I love this show with my whole heart, but as much as it pains me, I've had little good to say about the current season. I truly hope they can rally next year, and return to the excellent quality that characterized most of last season.

I love Cryer as Luthor. However, Lena simply has to go. The parts where Lex spent even a microsecond thinking about Lena and reacting to those thoughts, were, by far, the worst parts of the episode--except for the actual Lena parts. More Lillian, LESS Lena (as in, NO MORE LENA).

The CW doesn't care as much about live viewing audience numbers as much as other networks. It's one of the only (maybe the only?) "major" (I use that term loosely) networks that relies almost as much (if not more) on ad revenue made during streaming. And I think Supergirl is still a top driver show for them in that regard.

Add to that the fact that Berlanti is on a huge deal with them and WB, and I would find it incredibly hard to imagine that they'd even mention the word "cancellation" with regards to Supergirl unless Berlanti specifically isn't opposed to it. They're not going to risk pissing off the EP of basically what amounts to 80% of their top shows on the network.

I also think Berlanti views Supergirl with somewhat of a "favourite child" outlook. He's pretty close with Melissa Benoist professionally, there is lots of mutual respect in that relationship. And I think he's obviously in favour of the staunch liberal themes presented in the series. It'd take a considerable amount of pressure and heat from multiple places to get him to consider pulling the plug on the show.
