Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

Both the DC comics themselves and the DCW series have firmly established the multiverse, so really, everything is canon. ;) Infinite Earths and all that.

Actually, after the "Infinite Crisis", there was a mutliverse of only 52 Earths (because they thought limiting themselves was a wonderful idea), and the DC Animated Universe was part as Earth-12, so, yeah, the cartoons were definitely canon.

Just had a thought - in the opening titles every week, we see Superman rip the canopy off of young Kara's pod, shattering the glass.

Obviously the DEO must have fixed it at some point in the intervening years. That, combined with Alex's quickness in using it - not to mention the fact that it's always sitting right there in the control room, handy - makes me wonder if they've been flying it all these years.

Like any organization, the DEO would have analysts--specialists assigned to that kind of tech, learning all there is to know about the pod, so yes--IF it was figured it out to any degree, they would be the most likely candidates for piloting the vehicle.

Mediocrity is such a subjective thing that who are you to judge anyone that way. I'm content with a show that has great likable characters and provides a fun hour every week. The show isn't perfect and I do hope the writing improves but Alex, Kara, and Cat are way down the list of things wrong with this show. Heck I'd say they are what is right with the show.

Those 3 are definitely what I like about the show, although I have to admit Alex and Cat had to grow on me since they both were introduced in a fairly negative way.

I love the dynamic between the two foster sisters and Cat's classic CEO isolation and her icy façade melting when exposed to Kara's persistent loyalty, keen insight and positive personality. The end of their finale interaction when Cat calls Keerah, "Kara" shows us Cat was not oblivious for 2 years, she was testing her assistant in her own weird way.

I also love J'onn J'onzz and his relationship with Alex. I am especially glad that they are not only back with the DEO but that Lucy is remaining there too. I see some potential friction between Lucy and Alex in the future, since in effect Lucy will be taking Alex's old job as 2nd in command. I prefer to see that kind of professional competition/ friction rather than the love triangle stuff TPTB manufactured with Kara and James.

The recent reintroduction of Alex's & Kara's Mom is also welcome, now that Kara's aunt is KIA. It gives us more of the family dynamic, suggesting season 2 will be more focused on the human family (with Mom and the missing Dad) rather than Kara's Kryptonian one. (As long as its not Kara's Mom in that capsule.)

As for the Superman stuff... I figure its a big bad world out there and he can't drop his battles to keep rescuing Kara, just like Kara can't drop hers to come rescue him. Anyway... didn't they have some sort of understanding early on in the season after he stepped in once, that he wouldn't keep dropping by to save her bacon, that he had to trust her to work her way through a problem?

I hope there's a season 2 and if not on CBS then I hope The CW is willing to give it a go.

I really like this show. Although i wouldn't mind losing James Olsen and Maxwell Lord if there's a season 2.. I've not warmed to either character. Olsen just isn't Olsen to me. I've nothing against the actor and in a different role he would fit in fine, but not as Jimmy Olsen.

Actually, although James is different from how Jimmy has traditionally been portrayed onscreen, I think that in some ways he's actually the most faithful extrapolation we've ever seen of the Jimmy Olsen from his heyday in Silver and Bronze Age comics. Movies and TV have conditioned us to think of Jimmy as a gawky, inexperienced cub reporter and/or photographer, but in the '60s and '70s comics, Jimmy was an accomplished, world-famous, globetrotting reporter-adventurer in his own right -- someone who'd left his cub-reporter days well behind him and built a successful career. That's basically who this show's James had become before he moved to National City. Also, most screen versions of Jimmy have tended to be most closely associated with other Daily Planet characters -- generally a sidekick for Lois, a work friend for Clark, or a protege for Perry (or Chloe's love interest in Smallville). He's been someone for Superman to rescue, no more or less than anyone else. This show's version is the first one who's really been defined by his role as "Superman's Pal," as he was in his namesake comics series and to an extent in the radio show where he debuted. Throw in the signal watch and the turbulent relationship with Lucy Lane, and this is the most comics-authentic Jimmy Olsen we've ever had. (Except for the photographer gig. That pretty much began with the Reeve movies, as far as I can tell.)

I actually really like the version of James Olsen we have in this series--in fact, I like all of the supporting cast.

As for the ending scene, it was nice of Kara's parents to send her dog along after her--wasn't it? I'm looking forward to the adventures of Krypto! next season. :techman:

I just watched the finale again, and I'm amused that General Lane says to Supergirl, "You try moving a million-ton space station," and a few minutes later, she does exactly that. Foreshadowing!

And can someone briefly explain to me what happens at the end of Working Girl?

The protagonist achieves the capitalist dream of getting her own office space. Ironically, the camera pulls back to show she just one of thousands of little minions working for the corporations. That's my "ironically" by the way, but it is the way I've always seen the movie--a happy ending, sort of.

And can someone briefly explain to me what happens at the end of Working Girl?

I'll just quote from the last paragraph of the wikipedia plot description:

Tess starts her new job, armed with a lunchbox prepared by Jack. Directed to an office, she sees a woman on the phone, assumes she is her new boss and seats herself in the typing pool. The woman (Amy Aquino) reveals she is, in fact, Tess’s secretary and Tess is the new junior executive for whom she is working. Tess insists they work together as colleagues, showing she will be very different from Katharine. She then calls Cynthia from her office overlooking Manhattan to say she's landed her dream job.

The following is not about you, but it brings up a point I touched on a few pages ago: some viewers have serious issues with the James character and/or Mechad Brooks as an actor (when he's one of the few consistent actors on the series). I observed some fans seeing this awkward version of Kara as a representation of themselves, so they also sold themselves on the idea that Kara should be with their idea of the "right" man--a geek like Winn (wimpy), or someone who is thought to have some geek traits like Barry.

Certain fans have been beating the anti-James drum (well, this version of Olsen) online from the start, and despite the always revealing defense of "its not about James being black," a number of fans (many often talking about how "progressive" they are about social issues) cry about how James is "supposed" to be a redheaded geek (like the complaining set), not "some black guy." So much for the progressive mindset.

This is not a case of hardline comic traditionalists complaining, since few of the anti-James crowd are traditionalists about other comic-to-screen casting or stories, but they reserve special distaste for this latest version of Olsen. Another recent example is after Kevin Smith said the finale would make fans sad, fans speculated on a possible death, but the anti-James crowd actively posted death wishes, all for the same, ill-minded reasons.

I'll give you one of the lighter examples (but revealing in any case) of the reaction to James just walking to Kara's door, then the kiss from "Worlds Finest." Click to 12:22 in this review video--

It matters not who viewers want Kara to love, but this one reaction is a sample of the kind of hostility aimed at the James character. I seriously doubt its all about a desire to see Kara with their idea geek character. To be clear, there are far worse videos and posts, but I will not repost them here.

Ideally, I think the actor/character would have worked better as a mentor than a love interest, but I'm fine with Kara getting together with James. The writers just need to keep the relationship drama to a minimum. It would also help if they avoid putting Lucy in the middle, which never worked as a plotline and just alienated James from the group.

Honestly, I've never really had a preference between James and Winn, so I was going be equally happy no matter who she ended up with,
I'm hoping that the fact that they've moved Lucy over to the DEO and out of CatCo means we won't be getting as much of the love triangle drama, and that she'll just be a part of the DEO/Supergirl stories.
