It might be more effective if they don't actually show Kodos but show a tearful 13 year old Jim Kirk crawling around amidst all the dead bodies while archive audio of Kodos' speech from TOS plays in the background.

It's not a mystery. Obsession discussed this more, with Kirk feeling responsible for the death of his captain.
