No. It's write-for-hire, which is a world away from fanfiction. And as you'll find in multiple threads, those books have been used many times by TV/film Trek, from character's first names to Andorian naming conventions. They don't have to follow anything from it, but they sometimes do.
I doubt it will be a demotion. In TOS he had just joined the ship so it will probably be written as him leaving to take a Starfleet Medical job.
We will here at Trekbbs in the long run. I look forward to the many threads in our future exploring this topic.
The hype is for Trek fans. They know fans like Bones and Sulu. What they don't know about is the Trek fans passionate desire to see more Dr. Boyce and Dr. Piper.

Rememebr they annouced the Casting of James T. Kirk very early in promoting SNW S1 (which had already been completed and they were 5 episodes into filming S2 when S1 Rp. 1 first streamed) for the exact same reason.
Because that's what marketing does.

word on the street is that star trek strange new worlds season 5 will have sulu and checkoff but they will only appear in the very last episode of season 5 when captain james tiberius kirk takes over for chris pike to run the enter prize
