Paramount has just finished the Kelvin trilogy. They're backing away from Kirk, Spock, and McCoy for a while.

If they were doing Year One, they would've gone with Piper or M'Benga (Piper is a blank slate. He doesn't have a ton of backstory behind him.)

I like Thomas Jane, though he isn't the first person I would have thought of as McCoy. But hey, the other recast TOS characters who have shown up in SNW have all been perfectly cast, so I'll trust they made the right decision. Don't know anything about the guy playing Sulu.

There's absolutely no reason to expect Piper in Year One, just as there was never any reason to expect Boyce in SNW.

This sounds logical, but in fact it's fabricated from poor premises and has no bearing on reality.

Which reminds me that Tom and Rebecca have already worked together at least once, in The Punisher. In which Tom's car had a license plate that said Year One!

Alex Kurtzman tries to gear shows towards new viewers as much as possible. He doesn't want shows loaded down with a ton of backstory.

Paramount is rebooting the feature film franchise with a new ship and a new crew that's completely disconnected from anything Trek has done before. After three Kelvin films featuring Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, I don't see P+ going back to that well anytime soon.

The idea of using Piper is ridiculous.

Why?

He's a blank slate. He doesn't have sixty years of backstory behind him.

If Year One has Piper and Boyce to develop, why would they jump ahead to McCoy? (Early McCoy/Kirk was already covered in the Kelvin films.)

I don't mind the casting but it's kinda unfortunate it's only for one episode. Seems like they really wanted to do Year One.

There's a couple of contradictory accounts.
The DC Comic "All Those Years Ago. . ." says that McCoy was absent the first year because the divorce came through and he wanted to spent time with his daughter Joanna.
One of the books says he didn't join the first year because he was still dealing with the death of his father, that he played a part in, and he accepted the assignment on Capella IV for that reason.

Goldsman wanted to do Year One. Because he wanted to keep his job. And even if he does keep some kind of job, it won't be because Skydance wants to make Y1.

Yes, I imagine it will be a clean slate with a new creative team. They sure did roll the dice with this casting though.
